He was one of the three candidates in the Hong Kong Chief Executive election, 2012, where 1200 members of the Election Committee are eligible to vote, but lost to Leung Chun-ying.
Tang's family operated in the textile industry and came from Wuxi, Jiangsu to Hong Kong in 1949. Henry Tang himself was born in Hong Kong in 1952. Tang holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Michigan. He is a graduate of class of 1975. He is married with four children, three daughters and a son. Tang is also widely rumoured to have an illegitimate child
Tang has extensive ties with PRC leaders. His father Tang Hsiang Chien is a former standing committee member of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, the advisory body to the National People's Congress.
Tang was named Global Leader for Tomorrow by the World Economic Forum in 1993 and won the Young Industrialist of Hong Kong award in 1989.
Leung Chun-ying GBM, GBS, JP (born 12 August 1954), commonly known as CY Leung, is the Chief Executive-elect of Hong Kong, following his victory in the 2012 Hong Kong Chief Executive election. He will assume office on 1 July 2012.
A member of the pro-establishment bloc of Hong Kong politics, Leung was the Convenor of the Executive Council of Hong Kong until his resignation in September 2011.
Leung attended secondary school at King's College. In 1974, he graduated from the Hong Kong Polytechnic (now the Hong Kong Polytechnic University) with a higher diploma in building surveying. In 1977, he studied valuation and estate management at Bristol Polytechnic (now the University of the West of England) in the United Kingdom.
In 1977 Leung returned to HK from the UK and joined the real estate firm Jones Lang Wootton for 5 years. By the age of 30 he was already the chairman of the JLW branch in HK. Making a salary of HK$10 million a year, he was given the nickname "Emperor of the working class" (打工皇帝) early in his career. In 1993 he opened his own surveyor company. "The Man" is a slang phrase that may refer to the government or to some other authority in a position of power. In addition to this derogatory connotation, it may also serve as a term of respect and praise.
The phrase "the Man is keeping me down" is commonly used to describe oppression. The phrase "stick it to the Man" encourages resistance to authority, and essentially means "fight back" or "resist", either openly or via sabotage.
The earliest recorded use[citation needed] of the term "the Man" in the American sense dates back to a letter written by a young Alexander Hamilton in September 1772, when he was 15. In a letter to his father James Hamilton, published in the Royal Dutch-American Gazette, he described the response of the Dutch governor of St. Croix to a hurricane that raked that island on August 31, 1772. "Our General has issued several very salutary and humane regulations and both in his publick and private measures, has shewn himself the Man." [dubious – discuss] In the Southern U.S. states, the phrase came to be applied to any man or any group in a position of authority, or to authority in the abstract. From about the 1950s the phrase was also an underworld code word for police, the warden of a prison or other law enforcement or penal authorities.
Hong Kong people (Chinese: 香港人) refer to people who originate from Hong Kong. The term (and its Chinese equivalent) has no legal definition in Hong Kong. Rather, terms such as Hong Kong permanent resident (香港永久性居民) and Hong Kong resident (香港居民) are used. Besides being used by Hong Kong residents, the term Hong Konger may be used by people who for one reason or another do not have legal residence status but spent an extensive period of time in Hong Kong or otherwise have a strong cultural connection with Hong Kong. Thus the term is largely open to personal interpretation. None of the terms make reference to the ethnicity of a person and are independent of Chinese citizenship or residency statuses.
The vast majority of Hong Kong Chinese have ancestral roots from Guangdong Province in mainland China. After all, the SAR had experienced a great exodus of people in the years leading up to the handover, and yet migration from mainland China in recent years have brought about migrants who would prefer to refer themselves as Chinese. Many locals however simply refer themselves as Hong Kong people (Hèung Góng Yàhn).
Leon Lai is a Hong Kong-based actor and Cantopop singer. The media refer to Aaron Kwok, Jacky Cheung, Andy Lau and Leon Lai as the Cantopop Four Heavenly Kings (四大天王). He uses the stage name "Li Ming" or "Lai Ming" which literally means "dawn."
Lai was born in Beijing, China as Lai Chit (黎捷) with Meixian, Guangdong ancestry. His family was originally from Meixian. His parents divorced when he was four. He migrated with his Malaysian Chinese father, Lai Xinsheng to Hong Kong during the Cultural Revolution in China. At the age of 15, he attended Kingsway Princeton College in the United Kingdom and returned to Hong Kong at the age of eighteen in 1984.
Lai initially worked as a salesperson for a mobile phone company. After being awarded second-runner-up in the 1986 5th New Talent Singing Awards, Lai received vocal coaching from Dai Si Zong (戴思聰). In the same year he also obtained an artist contract from Capital Artists. Lai did not release any albums for four years. As a result, his teacher, Dai, arranged to have him signed a contract with Polygram, later known as Universal Music.
