Smoke alert for Perth, South West as bushfires pop up across state

  • Hannah Barry

A smoke alert has been issued for the Perth metro and areas of the south west, as bushfires continue to pop up across the state.

Bushfire alerts have been issued for parts of Mount Barker, Meekatharra, Wiluna, and Dumberton over the last five hours.

The all-clear signal has been given to Toodyay, Goomalling, Newman and Mariginiup.

A bushfire north of Nannup has caused a smoke alert to be issued for Kirup, Balingup and Donnybrook.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services said while the smoke is expected to clear throughout the day, residents should still take precautions.

"If the smoke is particularly thick, it is recommended people shut doors and windows and turn off air-conditioner," a spokesperson said.

"Smoke may reduce visibility on some roads and motorists should take care, turn on headlights and travel at appropriate speeds when travelling in these areas."

Perth was blanketed in smoke this morning, which caused visibility issues for the city's motorists.

Firefighters are now attending a shrub fire on Baldivis Road. The fire is the third this week for the area.

A fire in Toodyay that posed a potential threat to homes on Saturday afternoon has now been downgraded.

DFES said residents should keep up to date with their local fire warnings, as conditions continue to change.
