Melbourne weather: Get ready for a warm start to summer

  • 29 reading now

Melbourne will turn on the warmth for the first day of summer, with a top of 27 degrees forecast for Thursday.

But don't pack your woollies away just yet, because a cool change will arrive soon after, sending us back to the low 20s on Friday.

This past week has been unseasonably cool, with maximum temperatures lingering around 3 degrees below the November average.

After a hot Monday, when we saw a top of 35 degrees, Tuesday's maximum temperature dropped to 15. The mercury lingered around 17 over the following few days.

Sunday's weather isn't expected to get much warmer, with the maximum temperature forecast at 19 degrees, 3 degrees below the mean November high of 22 degrees.

The city woke up to drizzle on Sunday morning, with a sky blanketed in clouds. Those clouds are expected to stick around for the rest of the day, together with light southerly winds carrying cool air over the city.

But the sun'll come out tomorrow. After some early patchy fog, Monday will be mostly sunny, with a top of 22 degrees.

While Tuesday will start off overcast, the clouds will clear by the afternoon, letting the mercury hit 23 degrees before it cools down overnight.

Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Stephen King says we've been stuck in a static pattern since overnight last Monday, when a cold front came through and a high pressure system hit Victoria's west, directing cool south-westerly winds over the state.

"But the high will slowly move eastwards this week, breaking this trend of south-westerly airflows a little bit, and bringing us some more sunny afternoons," he says.

This summer is expected to be hotter and drier than usual in Victoria – especially in December, when the state is most likely to see above average temperatures and below average rainfall.
