Update

I've been away for a long time. Some things happened in my life that needed attention more than this blog.
In the meantime, Blogger decided to update the service with a new design / layout / interface ... which somehow has left me without administrative rights to my own blog. I've been using blogger since 2009 without any problems, until now. I've reached out to the Blogger admin team for some help, with no resolution found.

So ... I'll be moving the blog over to www.atiwygwylei.wordpress.com. I plan on leaving the past content posted on this blog (at least for a while) for anyone who may want to revisit it, but all new content will be created on Wordpress. I hope to see you all migrating your attention to the new location. I have much to post.

Jazzed Up - Alright 12"

This is the 1996 Final Phase Records 12" for the work by Mike Truman and Lee Mullins (otherwise known as two of the founding members of Hybrid).
The A side mix is a "handbag" style tune with stomping beats, storming piano lines and is chocked full of the uplifting Father MC sample. This version is a concise snapshot of a short lived musical genre that was in style during the early to mid 1990s.
The B side starts off with the Hybrid boys remixing the tune under the lesser known Solid Collective alias. This mix is a breakbeat interpretation that uses some of the same sonic elements that were used in the now legendary track "Symphony", along with some more rave-y sounding stabs that push the energy level of this remix way up. It's a stormer of a cut with an overwhelming amount of positive vibes soaked in.
The second remix is listed under the Hybrid moniker and adds yet another dimension to the sonic pallet of this single. Taking a solid 4/4 approach and running the tune into the red, the mix does what the previous mix does and builds itself into a towering piece of dancefloor goodness.
All three mixes are here for your listening pleasure.
Enjoy.

Seth Lawrence - Future Sound of Amherst 12"

This is the 2001 Stimuli Records 12" for the track by American producers Seth Lawrence and Steve Porter.
The A side original mix is a straightforward progressive house cut with clean patterns, crisp percussion and a feathery arpeggio that creates forward sonic motion. The production value is similar to other SP works and carries the hallmark sounds that propelled him into the international dance music spotlight.
The B side is a thundering remix by Bristol UK producers Starecase. Their remix adds multiply layers of sounds and reinterprets the basic structure into something that is greater than the original version. This mix is one of the best works to appear on the short lived label, and sadly the last.
Both mixes are here for your listening pleasure.
Enjoy.

Pablo Gargano - Eve Records 024 12"

This is the 1998 Eve Records release for the tech-trance cuts by Italian super producer Pablo Gargano.
This release is also known as the "Chemistry of Soul" EP. With the lead-off cut being the namesake, you get an Orbital inspired work that many thought was an actual release by the brothers Hartnoll (until some trainspotters put that idea to rest). The other two pieces are unique and groovy in their own way, with the last cut "Essential Listening For All" being the stronger of the two.
This EP is an excellent snapshot of the sound that was coming from the "trance" scene in the late 90's and a good indication of the quality of music that was to come in the new millennium.
All three songs are here for your listening pleasure.
Enjoy.

Sheila - Love Kiss / Acid Kiss 12"

This is the original 1989 Quark Records 12" release for the X-Rated house cut. The EP was licensed the same year to R&S; Records for a wider overseas distribution, making it more accessible to the larger European dance music market. To say that this vinyl contains some interesting sounds is an understatement ...

The Irresistible Force - Waveform / Natural Frequency 12" (US exclusive remixes)

This is the 1995 Astralwerks 12" for the US exclusive remixes by Mixmaster Morris of two cuts from the 1994 album Global Chillage.
The A side remix of Waveform is a ticking, tumbling breakbeat version that adds multiple sounds and lush layers to create a truly interesting remix that is one of the best interpretations of MM's work.
The B side remix of Natural Frequency is a slow, funky cut that bubbles along with crisp percussion, reverb of pings, pops, blips and blops and warm gated pads that flesh out the track to make this an absolute aural treat.
Both sides of the 12" are here for your listening pleasure.
Enjoy.

Air Tattoo - Synaesthesia 12"

This is the 1992 Crib Records 12" for the track by Air Tattoo.
The A side original mix is a groovy proto-progressive house cut that starts slow, but quickly sets in with layering of sounds and rhythms that create a proper early 90's vibe.
The B side remix was done by Phantom Power (aka Air Tattoo). This mix is a cleaner, more to the point version that seems to cut out the extraneous sounds and leaves the essential quality of the audio pieces to make the point.
Both sides of the vinyl are here for you to enjoy.

Sandals - Feet 12" (US version)

This is the 1994 FFRR/Polygram Records US 12" release for the remixes of the track by Sandals. The A side features two remixes by some of the finest UK producers. The first mix was constructed by the duo formerly known as The Dust Brothers. Their mix is a chunky beat driven funk-fest that pushes bass heavy rhythms and wild synth patterns to make this a memorable remix effort. The second mix was done by Glasgow, Scotland techno duo Slam. The remix is one of two done by them, but the only one released on vinyl. Starting off slowly and building into a frenzied pit of spastic sound, this mix is the most aggressive sounding of all that were commissioned for the release.
The B side remixes were both done by members of the Hardkiss "family". The first is credited to Next School (aka Scott Hardkiss) and is without a doubt, the most interesting of the cuts released on this 12". With a triple BPM change, this is both a fun and funky tune and a workable DJ tool to switch up mood and/or tempo. The second remix was put together by both Robbie Hardkiss and Scott Hardkiss and is closer to what the predominant sound of San Fran was at the time. With live guitar laid over the loose percussion patterns and sounds that flutter in and out of the mix, it definitely has the "west coast house sound" heartily infused.
All four mixes are here for your listening pleasure.
Enjoy.

Me and Jack - This Way Up / Satisfaction 12"

This is the 1995 Me and Jack double-sided 12" release for the follow-up to the 1993 über progressive house monster "Viva House".
The A side cut is a 4/4 and breakbeat hybrid that utilized a thick bassline, squiggly synth work and fluttering arpeggios to construct a solid track that fit well with the predominant sound of the mid 90's progressive house scene.
The B side song is a house-ier tune that uses a female vocal sample to give the track cohesion and some drive. A solid work to compliment the A side and make this vinyl worthy of flipping over again and again.
Both sides of the 12" are here for your listening enjoyment.
