Roman mayor on the brink of a Brexit-style bombshell that could destroy EU

Virginia Raggi, (top left) a 38-year-old former lawyer, who in June became Rome's first female mayor, sweeping to victory with 67 per cent of the vote, is a star in Beppe Grillo's (top right) Five Star Movement (M5S). The referendum they look likely to wi has effectively turned into a vote on the leadership of Prime Minister Matteo Renzi - and if he loses, which looks probable, there are fears it will set in train a sequence of events leading to the country abandoning the single currency, an outcome dubbed 'Quitaly'. As David Cameron did over Brexit, Mr Renzi has staked his political future on the vote, saying he will step down if he loses. And if that happens, M5S is widely tipped to triumph at the next election. If he wins, the comedian has vowed to hold a referendum on the single currency.

How I fell for the lies of the Wonderbra conwoman Ryley Cruz

For every victim she had a different face. To one wealthy property owner, she was an alluring temptress, to another, a high-powered barrister. To yet others, she was a former Wonderbra model, a wealthy heiress or a style guru to celebrity chef Heston Blumenthal. For Matthew Matheou (left), the popular owner of the Green And Pleasant Tea Rooms in picturesque Bourton-on-the-Water, in the Cotswolds, Ryley Cruz (right) was a single mother dying from colon cancer. There seemed no reason to disbelieve her: after all, he had been to visit her in hospital. But she was none of the above. Instead, the 37-year-old dark-haired beauty was one of Britain's most accomplished fraudsters. And when she stood accused in the dock of Gloucester Crown Court before Judge Jamie Tabor QC last week, his summing up was scathing. Tabor told her: 'You are a practised and accomplished liar and a skilled forger... You are, even by the standards of the criminal courts, exceptionally devious.'

Fidel Castro slaughtered his critics and brought the world to the brink of Armageddon

While his modish Western admirers liked to call him 'Fidel', the despotic President Castro (left picture, stood right) frightened his subjects who dared not speak his name, writes Peter Hitchens. They feared they would be overheard by ever-present secret police spies who made East Germany's Stasi look like amateurs. Glancing around nervously, they would mime either a beard or a set of epaulettes, before speaking in whispers about the tyrant who dominated every aspect of their hungry, censored lives. No wonder. The 'Committees for the Defence of the Revolution', present in every workplace, school and street, watched everyone, reported every word out of place and ruined the lives of those who spoke out of turn.
