How did the bleeps and blips begin, you ask? Presented today for your academic enlightenment is “OHM: The Early Gurus of Electronic Music”, a collection that chronicles the development of electronic music during the 20th century. Granted, some of the selections may sound merely like random noises; however, it’s the techniques used to create those noises that make these recordings historically relevant.

Note: CD 1, track 15 is supposed to be an excerpt from Milton Babbit’s 1964 composition “Philomel.” Unfortunately, one of Babbit’s later, non-electronic compositions, “Phonemena For Soprano And Piano”, is incorrectly included instead.

This year, the UK is celebrating the 40th anniversary of punk. While the origins and foundations of punk predate 1976, that year is generally acknowledged as the period during which the subculture exploded. With bands forming throughout the UK, legendary live shows taking place, and the first recordings being released, 1976 was a crucial and influential time for punk. Arguably the best box set of its kind, “①②③④: Punk & New Wave 1976-1979” collects key recordings from the punk and early post-punk era.

On this date in music history—two very important gigs were staged on 4 July 1976: Ramones supported protopunk band Flamin’ Groovies at The Roundhouse in London; and The Clash made their live debut opening for Sex Pistols at the Black Swan in Sheffield.

And for all the house heads grumbling that you can’t dance to punk, I offer two fingers in response, and remind you of the pogo.
