Tasmin Archer ‎– In Your Care / Sleeping Satellite (Italian Maxi 12″)

I had a lot of time for this singer from Bradford,at the time I thought she was obviously under the wing of svengali, Trevor Horn (that turns out to be a load of bollocks). This is another production and mix by Julien Mendelsohn here helped by Paul Wickens.

The slow, heartfelt “In Your Care”(from 1993) should of been a bigger hit. There are elements of Chrissie Hynde here, very heartfelt with a harrowing video too.

Massive hit, “Sleeping Satellite”, is here. The extended version is just pure class but has obvious comparisons to Duran Duran’s “Come Undone.” Co-written by Archer, John Hughes and John Beck (from It Bites)there is a good old fashioned rock element in here (that guitar solo on the 12″) The “Fritz Mix” lightens everything up with more of a groove and synths.

The Beat – Mirror In The Bathroom ’95 (12″)

beated

Here we go another re-rub that works on some of the mixes. Sure Is Pure ( brothers Danny Spencer – Ex Candy Flip and Kelvin Andrews)  keeping  the dub elements and slowing it down then kicking it into a different, tougher groove…unexpected. Tic Tac Toe is a deep drum and bass mix, interesting with some extra saxophone. Simon and Diamond (More Brothers, Simon Duggal and Diamond Duggal from Apache Indian) adds more hip-hop beats and dub and brass hits. If you want really deep dub try the Adelphi (Davide Arcoleo) with whinning dogs and spooky wails, dark and sounding not too dated. The best of the mixes.

The Associates – Fire And Ice (US Promo 12″)

See’s things have picked up after a nervous start to this new decade. Thanks mostly to Mike’s superb rare promo’s here is another from the Associates from 1990.A later release which has been given lush strings over a 70’s disco beat by Julian Mendelsohn. New York DJ, Bobby Konders does the ice house thang, piano and a deep bass over the beats and THAT voice. All the mixes are very similar but I like the light piano on the “Frosty Vocal Mix.” Again piano lovers will love the overdubbed piano on B2 and 3 provided by Julio Herrera. Always one for a interesting take on another song, “Green Tambourine” (originally by The Lemon Pipers from 1968) keeping the psychedelia and notching it up to the max!

Slim Fast Presents Deep’ish Mode ‎– A Violation For The Masses (12″)

Love a good bootleg especially if it’s of good quality. As mentioned before Mode literally have 1000’s of bootleg mixes mostly in digital form but I love the fact this was committed to wax. The mysterious Safer Bake remixes from “Violator” reinvigorating with new beats and overdubs. “Here Is The House” is an unusual track to remix and comes in at over 12 minutes long. “World In My Eye” is the best of the bunch.

Eurythmics – Sweat Dreams (Are Made Of This)’91 (12″)

This crept out and to be honest I couldn’t tell the difference at the time, that was how subtle the remix/update was. Slightly more percussion and an updated synth lead it was remixed by the legendary Giorgio Moroder. He does have a bigger fiddle on the quite short “House Mix”, beefing the bass and beats up but keeping it nearly the same slow 80’s tempo. The “Hot Mixes” adds some more overdubbed synths.
A nice little extra is an early techno remix by Dave Angel (one of his first remixes) with Dave Dorrell (from M|A|R|R|S) , darker beats, Halloween styled samples and even a saxophone sample. Another one that works!! Shock! Horror!

ABC – The Look Of Love (’90 Remix)

abced

A pattern is appearing here in the early 90’s. I blame those greedy record companies

More classic 80’s bands re-emerging with a remix, this was tickles the ABC classic care of  Paul Staveley O’Duffy.

ABC meets Kraftwerk!! (Computer World) Layered funky basslines intertwine with housey piano and familiar brass and orchestra stabs and it works for once! Shock!

Also included is the later ABC’s singles, the sickly sweet “Ocean Blue”, and the “Abigail’s Party Mix” of “Vanity Kills”

The Grid ‎– A Beat Called Love (12″)

Ex- Soft Cell music maestro , Dave Ball, teamed up with Richard Norris (now part of one of my current fave bands, Beyond The Wizards Sleeve, with Errol Alkan.) to form The Grid. The main mix contains a catchy and funky Heller and Farley mix with extended trumpet solo that enhances Sacha Souter , sultry vocal performance.

This was the follow up “Flotation” and does feature a marvelous chill-out mix of that track by Olimax & DJ Shapps which samples prog rock, Deep Forest and Aled Jones!!!!

Was (Not Was) – How The Heart Behaves (12″)

From 1990 and the ever creative and weird Was (Not Was). Here with Bobby Brown beats and OTT  production, I prefer the poignant, acoustic version on “Hello Dad..” It  still is a great pop song with plenty of hooks.

As usual the b-sides are where to look on any Was (Not Was) release. Down right weird on the “The Weird And Wonderful World Of” spoken word and free form jazz, Eels would be proud! “Anything Can Happen” is a remixed tune from 1988, housed up and mutated and definitely not R&B!! Loads of samples to spot including “I’ll Be Around” by The Spinners.

Barry Adamson & Anita Lane And The Thought System Of Love ‎– These Boots Are Made For Walking (Promo 12″)

Manchester’s Godfather of dark, jazz-tinged electronica teams up with Ex- Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds member, Aussie singer, Anita Lane. Here from a Mute Promo from 1991, three different takes on the classic Nancy Sinatra song. The “Sleep Walking” Mix is a nod to Trip Hop with layered slow beats and saxophone. By contrast the “Bonnie Floats On Airwear” mix has been done by Holger Hiller and Karl Bonnie (Renegade Soundwave) in their own offbeat way, much more electronic with frantic, skittering beats. Finally the “Box Fresh” mix, by Terry Donovan, is nearer to the original release that featured on Adamson’s album, “Delusion.”

God knows who The Thought System Of Love are!

Heaven 17 – (We Don’t Need This)Fascist Groove Thang ’93 Mixes (12″)

Seem’s to be recurring theme here, repolished for the 90’s. From 1993 and remixed in an Italian House style by Charlie Mallozi and Marco Sabiu (the Rapino Brothers.) Released to promote a the best of compilation, “Higher And Higher”, not sure if it works, it is a quick as the original but has had a complete overhaul with shiny but tinny synths, re-recorded vocals and repetitive sax samples , nah, trying too hard for the dancefloors in my opinion. The “Democratic Rapino” Mix is just bearable, sitting with the Ibiza chilled groove.
