D IS FOR DE’LACY
A perfect example of mid-1990s big room House, for superclubs everywhere. Given extra oomph through a couple of bass heavy Deep Dish mixes.
De’Lacy was De’Lacy Davis – percussionist, Gary Griffin – bassist & keyboard player, Glen Branch – drummer and singer and Rainie Lassiter – lead vocalist. Their big, big hit was “Hideaway”. This was made in association with successful and well-regarded New York garage/house production team Blaze. They collaborated with De’Lacy on “Hideaway” followed a year later by “That Look”.
Originally released in 1994 in the US, “Hideaway” was released in the UK on Deconstruction in 1995 and was massive, reaching No. 9 in the charts. The radio version was a generic big-lunged-postive-lyrics-but-forgettable thing which I did my best to avoid. In that typical way of such tracks it was re-released in 1998 and 2006. I don’t know much else about the group, other than they produced a small number of further singles, none of which were troubled by much success.
The real reason for posting this was that it was the remix that really brought Deep Dish to a wider audience. I have dismissed them in the past as producers of cheesy house remixes. But these remixes are pretty damn good, with Deep Dish giving the track some tough drums.
