In June I had the privilege to cooperate with the tourism Board of Malawi and work with a number of Malawian tourist companies to promote their services online, through shooting videos for their circulation on Youtube and websites.
I traveled with my friend David Martin around the Blantyre region and then joined a number of missionaries in the northern district of Livingstonia.
This video is a combination of what happened behind the scenes when traveling to film for the organisations I had links with.
Malawi is a country with so much beauty and potential. However Malawi is among the worlds least developed countries, with most of its economy based in agriculture. The people I met were wonderful and I hope that this trip will have helped at least someone in the long run.

This was filmed using a Canon S120 which broke 14 days in after kayaking on Lake Malawi and the rest was done on a couple of Go-Pro Hero 3’s.

Cape Maclear (or Chembe) is a town in the Mangochi District of Malawi's Southern Region. The town, situated on the Nankumba Peninsula, is on the southern shore of Lake Malawi and is the busiest resort on Lake Malawi. Cape Maclear is close to the islands of Domwe and Thumbwe on Lake Malawi, and is in Lake Malawi National Park.

Vacation travel video about destination Malawi in Africa.
Malawi is the unknown Africa in the south-east of the Continent. A wild country between sea and highlands, a land of contrasts with amazing green mountains and high plateaus but most of all, Lake Malawi.In the north west and on the border with Zambia is the thousand square kilometre Vwaza Marsh Wildlife Reserve, home to more than two hundred elephants who, in small groups, visit the Kazuni Safari Camp on their way to the lake. In the Lake Kazuni area there are many hippos and crocodiles which although rarely seen from the shore can certainly be heard at night. The location of the small town of Nkhata Bay is quite spectacular, a large, sheltered bay, accessible via a steep slope. Small boats transport the local people to various locations so that they can buy and sell, as there are hardly any roads around the lake. A restless, colourful and vibrant harbour town and the northernmost point which famous explorer Dr. David Livingstone reached on his historic voyage of discovery. Cichlids, the living jewels of Lake Malawi, are highly sought after among aquatic fish enthusiasts, the brightly coloured males achieving the highest prices. Provided with a good supply of oxygen and a light sedative in the water, once a month the fish are taken to the airport. The craggy rock scenery of Lake Malawi was not always below water. Only when the southern section of the East African Rift Valley filled with water did it become home to cichlids. On the extreme south east coast on the border with Mozambique is Mount Mulanje, a huge mountain range that formed during volcanic activity more than a hundred and thirty million years ago. At the foot of the mountain scenery grows one of the world’s finest varieties of tea. The Maravi Kingdom eventually became an independent country, Malawi, the warm and beating heart of Africa!

Malawi (/məˈlɔːwi/, /məˈlɑːwi/ or /ˈmæləwi/; Chichewa: [maláβi] or [maláwi]), officially the Republic of Malawi, is a landlocked country in southeast Africa that was formerly known as Nyasaland. It is bordered by Zambia to the northwest, Tanzania to the northeast, and Mozambique on the east, south and west. The country is separated from Tanzania and Mozambique by Lake Malawi. Malawi is over 118,000 km2 (45,560 sq mi) with an estimated population of 16,777,547 (July 2013 est.). Its capital is Lilongwe, which is also Malawi's largest city; the second largest is Blantyre and the third is Mzuzu. The name Malawi comes from the Maravi, an old name of the Nyanja people that inhabit the area. The country is also nicknamed "The Warm Heart of Africa".
Malawi is among the smallest countries in Africa. Lake Malawi takes about a third of Malawi's area.

Malawi is a country with so much beauty and potential. However Malawi is among the worlds least developed countries, with most of its economy based in agriculture. The people I met were wonderful and I hope that this trip will have helped at least someone in the long run.

In June I had the privilege to cooperate with the tourism Board of Malawi and work with a number of Malawian tourist companies to promote their services online, through shooting videos for their circulation on Youtube and websites.
I traveled with my friend David Martin around the Blantyre region and then joined a number of missionaries in the northern district of Livingstonia.
This video is a combination of what happened behind the scenes when traveling to film for the organisations I had links with.

Malawi is the unknown Africa in the south-east of the Continent. A wild country between sea and highlands, a land of contrasts with amazing green mountains and high plateaus but most of all, Lake Malawi.In the north west and on the border with Zambia is the thousand square kilometre Vwaza Marsh Wildlife Reserve, home to more than two hundred elephants who, in small groups, visit the Kazuni Safari Camp on their way to the lake. In the Lake Kazuni area there are many hippos and crocodiles which although rarely seen from the shore can certainly be heard at night. The location of the small town of Nkhata Bay is quite spectacular, a large, sheltered bay, accessible via a steep slope. Small boats transport the local people to various locations so that they can buy and sell, as there are hardly any roads around the lake. A restless, colourful and vibrant harbour town and the northernmost point which famous explorer Dr. David Livingstone reached on his historic voyage of discovery. Cichlids, the living jewels of Lake Malawi, are highly sought after among aquatic fish enthusiasts, the brightly coloured males achieving the highest prices. Provided with a good supply of oxygen and a light sedative in the water, once a month the fish are taken to the airport. The craggy rock scenery of Lake Malawi was not always below water. Only when the southern section of the East African Rift Valley filled with water did it become home to cichlids. On the extreme south east coast on the border with Mozambique is Mount Mulanje, a huge mountain range that formed during volcanic activity more than a hundred and thirty million years ago. At the foot of the mountain scenery grows one of the world’s finest varieties of tea. The Maravi Kingdom eventually became an independent country, Malawi, the warm and beating heart of Africa!

Nov 2007 Africa is in the grip of a medical crisis because its doctors are being lured away by lucrative jobs in Europe. Malawi now only has one doctor for every 50,000 people. "We are working under very difficult conditions. It's like we are in a war", laments Robert Lapyam Ayella, the only doctor at Mulanje District Hospital. As he goes from bed to bed, patients and staff clamour for his attention. But there are too many people for him to see and he lacks the proper drugs and equipment to treat them. "You reach a point of frustration and just say 'what am I doing here?'" In some Malawian hospitals, clinical officers without the proper training are working as doctors or surgeons. Africa is in the grip of a medical crisis because its doctors are being lured away by lucrative jobs in Europe. Malawi now only has one doctor for every 50,000 people.
"We are working under very difficult conditions. It's like we are in a war", laments Robert Lapyam Ayella, the only doctor at Mulanje District Hospital. As he goes from bed to bed, patients and staff clamour for his attention. But there are too many people for him to see and he lacks the proper drugs and equipment to treat them. "You reach a point of frustration and just say 'what am I doing here?'" In some Malawian hospitals, clinical officers without the proper training are working as doctors or surgeons. "I usually work 24 hour shifts in the emergency department", states clinical officer Stanley Chimabaui. Malawi's few remaining health workers also have to battle an AIDS pandemic. And the problem looks set to get worse. 25% of the country's health staff are expected to die of HIV/AIDS in the next decade. Facing these problems, it's not surprising entire medical classes decide to emigrate to the West, where they can earn 300 -- 400 times more. As one expat Malawian doctor states: "I earn a good wage in England. Why should I go back to Malawi to suffer?"

Despite government's efforts to boost the economic image of the country to global investors, economic freedom in Malawi remains poor. The legislatures have failed miserably to pass economic bills that would have made Malawi more competitive on the international trade arena.
Even politicians have delayed the passing of 2008/9 budget, which has created a climate of uncertainty thus slowing down the donors' inflows. Due to this, overall economic freedom or rather call it freedom to do business, is ranked poorly.
And the worst category for the country is freedom from corruption which is yet another reason that leads it to score poorly irrespective of high fiscal and labor freedom.
Malawi's economic problems, high inflation government subsidies are not widespread. A weak rule of law further jeopardizes the protection of property rights.
With all this going on, it remains a difficult struggle for Malawi to secure its economic independence and to take hold of their own economic destinies.

When Joyce Banda unexpectedly ascended to the presidency of Malawi last April, after the death of President Mutharika, many in her country and around the world wondered what her impact would be as Malawi's first woman president. Among the many challenges, her government faces high rates of maternal mortality, high total fertility rates, and high HIV prevalence among women and girls, combined with low levels of women's economic empowerment and widespread violence against women. In the weeks that led up to traveling with Rice 360º Institute for Global Health faculty and staff to Malawi in June, the question I got over and over was “What is Rice doing in Malawi?” I had a vague answer but knew it was not as simple as saving babies’ lives or building a hospital ward. From Malawi to Haiti and Back - Partners In Health Dr. Jonas Rigodon
In the pre-dawn hours of January 13, a phone call awakened Dr. Jonas Rigodon and his wife at their home in Neno, Malawi. The news was bad. A massive earthquake had just hit their native Haiti. Shocked and worried, Jonas and other Haitian physicians at PIH sites in Africa—which include Malawi, Lesotho, and Rwanda—struggled for news of family, friends, and colleagues. And, just a few days after the quake, these skilled physicians boarded planes to aid in the immediate relief efforts. Now back in Malawi, Jonas recorded a short video. In it he describes his return to Haiti, the ways in which international collaboration has strengthened PIH, and the importance of PIHs comprehensive approach to health and human rights. When Joyce Banda unexpectedly ascended to the presidency of Malawi last April, after the death of President Mutharika, many in her country and around the world wondered what her impact would be as Malawi's first woman president. Among the many challenges, her government faces high rates of maternal mortality, high total fertility rates, and high HIV prevalence among women and girls, combined with low levels of women's economic empowerment and widespread violence against women.
CSIS wanted to learn more about how women leaders in Africa are bringing new attention to women's health and empowerment in their own countries, and to bring those voices into the discussion about U.S. policy priorities for women's global health. To do this, we sent a small team to Malawi and Zambia in December 2012.

Poverty has a huge impact on the health of the population in Malawi. Poverty results in high levels of malnutrition, a lack of clean water, poor sanitation and a severe shortage or even absence of the most basic health care. Malawi's women and children are particularly affected: 183 in every 1000 children fail to reach their fifth birthday. In addition killer diseases such as malaria and tuberculosis and the HIV/AIDS pandemic also take an enormous toll on the lives and quality of life of families and communities across the country.
MACS supports health care through:
•Supporting 3 Anglican mission hospitals: St Anne's in Nkhotakota, St Luke's in Chilema and St Martin's at Malindi.
•Each hospital is responsible for running rural health centres. There are 14 health centres in total and MACS has provided donations to each of them to help in the running of nutrition clinics. These clinics provide food and teach mothers the best way to feed their children.
•Contributing to the training of nurses and midwives, by providing essential text books
•Funding the installation of wells and bore holes to provide a clean water supply
•Paying for the building of toilets and other means for improving sanitation.
•Helping with the construction and repair of buildings such as staff houses
•Providing drugs and medical equipment
•Provision of an ambulance boat for Chizumuli island.
•Provision of an ambulance for St Martin's Malindi
•Contributing to the cost of refresher courses for Home Care workers in Nkhotakota

In the weeks that led up to traveling with Rice 360º Institute for Global Health faculty and staff to Malawi in June, the question I got over and over was “What is Rice doing in Malawi?” I had a vague answer but knew it was not as simple as saving babies’ lives or building a hospital ward. To get the real answer, my fellow public affairs colleague Jade Boyd and I took four planes, endured a 15-hour layover in Germany and tried to keep up with two of the most dedicated people I have ever met as they quickly maneuvered through various airport terminals.
As co-directors, Rebecca Richards-Kortum and Maria Oden are the driving forces behind Rice 360º. Jade and I were welcome passengers on one of their many voyages to Malawi, the warm heart of Africa. It was a well-orchestrated trip by the Rice 360º team filled with sound bites praising the difference Rice is making in Malawi and wonderful memories made with the people involved. From the eight Rice interns living and learning from local Malawian students to our local filmmaking colleague and guide, Ernest M’Banga, we covered a 50-mile radius gathering elements to answer the question “What is Rice doing in Malawi?”
The answer was certainly not as simple as saving babies or building a new hospital ward. The answer is embodied in Mary Nankewbnya’s 1-day-old baby breathing because he is hooked to a bubble CPAP device created by four Rice senior engineering students in 2009. It is the dedication of a new neonatal ward at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital because Oden and Richards-Kortum donated the $100,000 from their Lemelson-MIT Award for Global Innovation to kick off a fundraising effort. The answer is also in the hills of Chilomoni, where 4-year-old Chigonjetsu now plays with his two brothers after he was born three months early and survived on CPAP. It’s in the design lab of the Malawi Polytechnic, where Rice and Poly students work late into the night perfecting the next lifesaving device.
Before this trip, I couldn’t say I had ever traveled more than 9,000 miles to answer a question. But sometimes the most fulfilling answers are the ones where you work a little harder. Now when I’m asked “What is Rice doing in Malawi?”, I’ll say that the headlines too often portray the worst of people. This is a story of the best we can be as people, learning together on the other side of the world so a premature baby can grow up to play with his brothers.

Shocked and worried, Jonas and other Haitian physicians at PIH sites in Africa—which include Malawi, Lesotho, and Rwanda—struggled for news of family, friends, and colleagues. And, just a few days after the quake, these skilled physicians boarded planes to aid in the immediate relief efforts.
Now back in Malawi, Jonas recorded a short video. In it he describes his return to Haiti, the ways in which international collaboration has strengthened PIH, and the importance of PIHs comprehensive approach to health and human rights.

Some have a diameter of more than two metres and are one metre high. They are not volcanoes but the leks of male cichlids. The tiny fish spend months building the leks so as to make a good impression on passing females. Lake Malawi, the ‘Lake Of Stars’, is a paradise of nature where in 1980 the southern section became the first national park in the world to be used for the conservation of freshwater fish.
