The Connection Machines were a series of supercomputers that grew out of Danny Hillis's doctoral research at MIT in the early 1980s on alternatives to the traditional von Neumann architecture of computation. The Connection Machines (CMs), beginning with CM-1, were originally intended for applications in artificial intelligence and symbolic processing, but later versions found greater success in the field of computational science.
Danny Hillis and Sheryl Handler founded Thinking Machines (TMC) in Waltham, Massachusetts in 1983, later moving it to Cambridge, MA. At TMC, Hillis assembled a team to develop what would become the CM-1 Connection Machine, a design for a "massively parallel" hypercubic arrangement of thousands of microprocessors, springing from this PhD thesis work at MIT in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (1985). The dissertation won the ACM Distinguished Dissertation prize in 1985, and was presented as a monograph that overviewed the philosophy, architecture, and software for the first Connection Machine, including information on its data routing between CPU nodes, its memory handling, and the Lisp programming language applied in the parallel machine.
The Connection may refer to:
A machine is a tool containing one or more parts that uses energy to perform an intended action. Machines are usually powered by mechanical, chemical, thermal, or electrical means, and are often motorized. Historically, a power tool also required moving parts to classify as a machine. However, the advent of electronics has led to the development of power tools without moving parts that are considered machines.
A simple machine is a device that simply transforms the direction or magnitude of a force, but a large number of more complex machines exist. Examples include vehicles, electronic systems, molecular machines, computers, television, and radio.
The word machine derives from the Latin word machina, which in turn derives from the Greek (Doric μαχανά makhana, Ionic μηχανή mekhane "contrivance, machine, engine", a derivation from μῆχος mekhos "means, expedient, remedy").
A wider meaning of "fabric, structure" is found in classical Latin, but not in Greek usage.
This meaning is found in late medieval French, and is adopted from the French into English in the mid-16th century.
Connection may refer to:
William Daniel "Danny" Hillis (born September 25, 1956) is an American inventor, engineer, mathematician, entrepreneur, and author. He co-founded Thinking Machines Corporation, a company that developed the Connection Machine, a parallel supercomputer designed by Hillis at MIT. He is also co-founder of the Long Now Foundation, Applied Minds, Metaweb Technologies, Applied Proteomics, and author of The Pattern on the Stone: The Simple Ideas That Make Computers Work. He is Judge Widney Professor of Engineering and Medicine at the University of Southern California.
Danny Hillis was born in Baltimore, Maryland in 1956. His father, William Hillis, was a US Air Force epidemiologist studying hepatitis in Africa and relocated with his family through Rwanda, Burundi, Republic of the Congo, and Kenya. He spent a brief part of his childhood in Calcutta, India when his father was a visiting faculty at ISI, Calcutta. During these years the young Hillis was home schooled by his mother Argye Briggs Hillis, a biostatistician, and developed an early appreciation for mathematics and biology. His younger brother is David Hillis, a professor of evolutionary biology at the University of Texas at Austin, and his sister is Argye E. Hillis, a professor of neurology at Johns Hopkins University.

The Connection Machine was the first commercial computer designed expressly to work on "artificial intelligence" problems simulating intelligence and life. A massively parallel supercomputer with 65,536 processors, it was the brainchild of Danny Hillis, conceived while he was a doctoral student studying with Marvin Minsky at the MIT Artificial Intelligence Lab. In 1983 Danny founded Thinking Machines Corporation to build the machine, and hired me to lead the packaging design group. Working with industrial design consultants Allen Hawthorne and Gordon Bruce, and mechanical engineer consultant Ted Bilodeau, our goal was to make the machine look like no other machine ever built. I have described that journey in this article, published in 1994 in the DesignIssues journal and republished in 20...
Architecture of the CM-5, lecture by Daniel Hillis. This video was recorded on November, 1991. From University Video Communications' catalog: "Daniel Hillis discusses the design and architecture of the CM-5 Connection Machine. The CM-5 represents a departure from previous SIMD and MIMD machines in that it is designed to run a singly, closely synchronized data parallel program using independent instruction streams. It is designed to be scalable up to one teraflop. Hillis describes how the design was guided by three major goals: support of the data parallel programming style, scalability, and issues of testing and reliability." A 1992 promotional video for the Connection Machine CM-5 massively parallel supercomputer from Thinking Machines Corporation
Born in 1956, US inventor, scientist, engineer and visionary W Daniel Hillis pioneered the concept of parallel computers and co-founded Thinking Machines and Applied Minds, which marked a new era in computing and established Hillis as a computing legend. [Listeners: Christopher Sykes and George Dyson] TRANSCRIPT: There have always been kind of two schools of thought in artificial intelligence. One of them is kind of the emergent intelligent idea, of, for instance, neural networks. The idea that you'd have some system that was a fundamentally simple system of replicated parts that had in it the inherent ability to organise. And that by some method of interaction with the world or training or something like that, that would form into something that could do intelligence. So neural networks ...

The CM5 Connection Machine was a pretty unique looking Supercomputer of the 80th, mostly remembered by it´s striking design and the cool Blinken Lights LED Front Panels. As an 3d CGI beginner, this is my modest attempt of a digital recreation of this Machine, made entirely with Blender. Featuring a remake of the ASM Code in Perl, matching the original Machines Light Patterns. Thanks to iskunk for making the code possible and to https://burp.renderfarming.net/ - without them i would be rendering for probably the next months or years on this animation. My Blender Python Code is based mainly on Iskunks C Code here: http://pastebin.com/YjMp1wwq which took some serious time to recreate the original random algorithm in Assembler. I first tried to make a "clean" looking room featuring this ...

The Thinking Machines Corporation CM-1 (Connection Machine) was a mid-1980s supercomputer using a then-novel massively parallel architecture containing up to 65,536 processors in a hypercube configuration. Certain types of operations, such as ray tracing or machine vision, could be performed at unprecedented speed with this system. And the LED-encrusted enclosure was a sight to behold!

It is the three phase system which has been adopted world over to generate, transmit and distribute electrical power. Therefore to change the level of voltages in the system three phase transformers should be used. Whenever a transformer is installed for transmission or distribution, the phase difference is one of the deciding factors for the type of transformer to be chosen. Explanation: To understand the concept with clarity it’s important to have basic idea of working of Transformers and Three Phase Circuits. Three number of identical single phase transformers can be suitably c...

And when I woke up, my body was all greasy from the holy
oil she used to put on my body. I remember being
disappointed I survived. When I was five, my father took
me to a friend of his, and for no reason at all I hit him
right in the stomach. with all my strength. He died a
