Aussies set world record for highest basketball shot

Three Australians enter the record books by sinking a swish, shot from the top of a Swiss dam.

Brett Stanford, Derek Herron and Scott Gaunson launched the ball from the top of the Mauvoisin Dam in Switzerland and watched as it went through the hoop of the basket 180 metres below.

It took just three attempts to make the shot.

Derek Herron, who took the record-breaking shot said it was a surreal moment.

"I watched the ball head towards the rim and saw the net move but still had my doubts that it went in until I saw Scott going crazy," he told Guinness World Records.

Like many world records this one has turned into a battle between different groups.

The Perth gang first won the title in 2011 with a 66.89 metre shot and then went on the better their score twice before American YouTubers Dude Perfect took the title with a shot from 162 metres earlier this year.

But now How Ridiculous have won back the title with their Swiss effort set against a stunning backdrop of valleys and water in the  Alps.

How Ridiculous started on the road to YouTube stardom by filming trick basketball shots in the backyards of their parents' homes.

They are now a global brand travelling the world doing trick shots with basketballs, footballs, golf balls and frisbees.

On their website the three YouTubers describe how they are all active in their local church community and that they use their internet fame to help the charity Compassion.
