Hume schools reap funding boost for maintenance

SEVERAL Hume schools will be able to fix up their old buildings, thanks to a funding boost from the State Government.

More than 400 schools in Victoria will get a share of the $41.6 million maintenance program, announced by Education Minister James Merlino last week.

Campbellfield Heights Primary School will receive $220,000 under the plan, which delighted principal Jo Howard.

“We’re very pleased to receive the funding and some of what we’ve got will definitely be used to replace the school roof,” she said.

Ms Howard said the school’s corrugated iron roof, which dated from 1972, had started leaking after the recent wild weather.

She said the school had been planning to “patch up” the roof but would now be able to replace it.

Ms Howard said the school would also hopefully use some of the funding to replace older-style, wooden window frames along its street-facing side with more modern, weatherproof aluminium ones.

Others in Hume to get State Government maintenance funding include Roxburgh Homestead, Roxburgh Park and Roxburgh Rise primary schools, which will share in more than $500,000.

Craigieburn South Primary School will get $166,000, Mickleham Primary School $46,000 and Meadow Heights Primary School $14,000.

Craigieburn Secondary College and four Sunbury schools will also receive funding.
