Subsidy
A subsidy is a form of financial aid or support extended to an economic sector (or institution, business, or individual) generally with the aim of promoting economic and social policy. Although commonly extended from Government, the term subsidy can relate to any type of support - for example from NGOs or implicit subsidies. Subsidies come in various forms including: direct (cash grants, interest-free loans) and indirect (tax breaks, insurance, low-interest loans, depreciation write-offs, rent rebates).
Furthermore, they can be broad or narrow, legal or illegal, ethical or unethical. The most common forms of subsidies are those to the producer or the consumer. Producer/Production subsidies ensure producers are better off by either supplying market price support, direct support, or payments to factors of production. Consumer/Consumption subsidies commonly reduce the price of goods and services to the consumer. For example, in the US at one time it was cheaper to buy gasoline than bottled water.

State (magazine)
State.ie (formerly State Magazine) is an Irish website and formerly a monthly music magazine, which launched in April 2008 and ceased to print in January 2009 having published a total of ten issues. The magazine continues online and was voted Best Music Site in 2008 and Best Web Publication in 2010 in the Irish Web Awards. Originally the concept of the magazine involved a hard copy of which there was a charge to purchase, however after six issues it was decided to make the magazine's content free both online and in print. The first issue, April 2008, appeared on Irish shelves on 6 March 2008 and featured Michael Stipe of R.E.M. on the cover. This immediately garnered comparisons between the new magazine's similarities with Hot Press who featured Stipe on their cover at the same time, a move widely thought to be an attempt by Hot Press to stifle State's status as a serious 'alternative' to the more established local magazine. At a price of €5.50, State charged €2 more than Hot Press.

A U.S.-built pier is in place to bring humanitarian aid to Gaza by sea, but no one will know if the new route will work until a steady stream of deliveries begins reaching starving Palestinians.
U.S. military officials hope to start with about 90 truckloads of aid a day through the sea route, growing quickly to about 150 trucks a day.
International experts say all 2.3 million of Gaza's people are experiencing acute levels of food insecurity, 1.1 million of them at "catastrophic" levels. Power and U.N. World Food Program Director Cindy McCain say north Gaza is in famine.
U.S. officials agree that the pier is only a partial solution at best, and say they are pressing Israel for more.
Meanwhile, Israel’s defense minister Yoav Gallant said the military would send more troops into Rafah while fighting also rages in northern Gaza, where Hamas has regrouped.

Aid agencies are running out of food in southern Gaza amid Israel’s ongoing offensive in Rafah and the shutdown of the two main border crossings in the south. Some 1.1 million Palestinians are on the brink of starvation, according to the United Nations, while a “full-blown famine” is taking place in the north. Meanwhile, some Israelis have been blocking aid from reaching the Gaza border, including a violent attack on trucks carrying humanitarian relief through the occupied West Bank earlier this week, when settlers threw food packages on the ground and set fire to the vehicles at the Tarqumiyah checkpoint near Hebron. “They did whatever they want,” says Israeli lawyer and peace activist Sapir Sluzker Amran, who documented the attack on the aid convoy. She says Israeli soldiers appeared to be working with the settlers, refusing to intervene. “They were just standing aside like there is nothing that they can do, like it’s normal, what’s happening.”

U.S. defense spending and military aid costs are adding up. President Joe Biden signed a $95 billion U.S. military aid package in April 2024, allocating funding to Ukraine, Israel, Taiwan and the Indo-Pacific region. This is on top of the National Defense Authorization Act of 2024, which authorized military spending of a record $886 billion. U.S. military spending and aid packages bolster the American defense industry. “People think we’re sending a big check to Ukraine”, Gregory Hayes, CEO of RTX, told CNBC’s “Squawk Box”. “The fact is what most of that money will do will go to support American defense industries here in the U.S."
The five largest U.S. defense companies, Lockheed Martin, RTX, General Dynamics, Boeing and Northrop Grumman, had Department of Defense contracts totaling more than $118 billion in fiscal year 2022. “There’s a lot of foreign countries that get aid from the United States that’s predicated upon using that aid to buy U.S. hardware,” said Ken Herbert, aerospace and defense analyst at RBC Capital Markets, told CNBC.

Can The U.S. Afford Its Military Aid Promises?

U.S. defense spending and military aid costs are adding up. President Joe Biden signed a $95 billion U.S. military aid package in April 2024, allocating funding to Ukraine, Israel, Taiwan and the Indo-Pacific region. This is on top of the National Defense Authorization Act of 2024, which authorized military spending of a record $886 billion. U.S. military spending and aid packages bolster the American defense industry. “People think we’re sending a big check to Ukraine”, Gregory Hayes, CEO of RTX, told CNBC’s “Squawk Box”. “The fact is what most of that money will do will go to support American defense industries here in the U.S."
The five largest U.S. defense companies, Lockheed Martin, RTX, General Dynamics, Boeing and Northrop Grumman, had Department of Defense contracts totaling more than $118 billion in fiscal year 2022. “There’s a lot of foreign countries that get aid from the United States that’s predicated upon using that aid to buy U.S. hardware,” said Ken Herbert, aerospace and defense analyst at RBC Capital Markets, told CNBC.

Subsidy
A subsidy is a form of financial aid or support extended to an economic sector (or institution, business, or individual) generally with the aim of promoting economic and social policy. Although commonly extended from Government, the term subsidy can relate to any type of support - for example from NGOs or implicit subsidies. Subsidies come in various forms including: direct (cash grants, interest-free loans) and indirect (tax breaks, insurance, low-interest loans, depreciation write-offs, rent rebates).
Furthermore, they can be broad or narrow, legal or illegal, ethical or unethical. The most common forms of subsidies are those to the producer or the consumer. Producer/Production subsidies ensure producers are better off by either supplying market price support, direct support, or payments to factors of production. Consumer/Consumption subsidies commonly reduce the price of goods and services to the consumer. For example, in the US at one time it was cheaper to buy gasoline than bottled water.

A U.S.-built pier is in place to bring humanitarian aid to Gaza by sea, but no one will know if the new route will work until a steady stream of deliveries begins reaching starving Palestinians.
U.S. military officials hope to start with about 90 truckloads of aid a day through the sea route, growing quickly to about 150 trucks a day.
International experts say all 2.3 million of Gaza's people are experiencing acute levels of food insecurity, 1.1 million of them at "catastrophic" levels. Power and U.N. World Food Program Director Cindy McCain say north Gaza is in famine.
U.S. officials agree that the pier is only a partial solution at best, and say they are pressing Israel for more.
Meanwhile, Israel’s defense minister Yoav Gallant said the military would send more troops into Rafah while fighting also rages in northern Gaza, where Hamas has regrouped.

Aid agencies are running out of food in southern Gaza amid Israel’s ongoing offensive in Rafah and the shutdown of the two main border crossings in the south. Some 1.1 million Palestinians are on the brink of starvation, according to the United Nations, while a “full-blown famine” is taking place in the north. Meanwhile, some Israelis have been blocking aid from reaching the Gaza border, including a violent attack on trucks carrying humanitarian relief through the occupied West Bank earlier this week, when settlers threw food packages on the ground and set fire to the vehicles at the Tarqumiyah checkpoint near Hebron. “They did whatever they want,” says Israeli lawyer and peace activist Sapir Sluzker Amran, who documented the attack on the aid convoy. She says Israeli soldiers appeared to be working with the settlers, refusing to intervene. “They were just standing aside like there is nothing that they can do, like it’s normal, what’s happening.”

U.S. defense spending and military aid costs are adding up. President Joe Biden signed a $95 billion U.S. military aid package in April 2024, allocating funding to Ukraine, Israel, Taiwan and the Indo-Pacific region. This is on top of the National Defense Authorization Act of 2024, which authorized military spending of a record $886 billion. U.S. military spending and aid packages bolster the American defense industry. “People think we’re sending a big check to Ukraine”, Gregory Hayes, CEO of RTX, told CNBC’s “Squawk Box”. “The fact is what most of that money will do will go to support American defense industries here in the U.S."
The five largest U.S. defense companies, Lockheed Martin, RTX, General Dynamics, Boeing and Northrop Grumman, had Department of Defense contracts totaling more than $118 billion in fiscal year 2022. “There’s a lot of foreign countries that get aid from the United States that’s predicated upon using that aid to buy U.S. hardware,” said Ken Herbert, aerospace and defense analyst at RBC Capital Markets, told CNBC.
