The name Greek Orthodox Church (Greek: Ἑλληνορθόδοξη Ἑκκλησία, Ellinorthódoxi Ekklisía, IPA: [elinorˈθoðoksi ekliˈsia]) is a term referring to the body of several Churches within the larger communion of Eastern Orthodox Christianity, whose liturgy is or was traditionally conducted in Koine Greek, the original language of the New Testament, and whose history, traditions, and theology are rooted in the early Church Fathers and the culture of the Byzantine Empire. Greek Orthodox Christianity has also traditionally placed heavy emphasis and awarded high prestige to traditions of Christian monasticism and asceticism, with origins in Early Christianity in the Near East and in Byzantine Anatolia. Today, the most important centres of Christian Orthodox monasticism are Saint Catherine's Monastery in the Sinai Peninsula (Egypt) and Mount Athos in Greek Macedonia (Northern Greece).
The Greek Orthodox churches are descended from churches which the Apostles founded in the Balkans and the Middle East during the first century A.D., and they maintain many traditions practiced in the ancient Church. Orthodox Churches, unlike the Catholic Church, have no Bishopric head, such as a Pope, and hold the belief that Christ is the head of the Church. However, they are each governed by a committee of Bishops, called the Holy Synod, with one central Bishop holding the honorary title of "first among equals."
John the Baptist (Ancient Greek: Ἰωάννης ὁ βαπτιστής, Ioannēs ho baptistēs or Ἰωάννης ὁ βαπτίζων, Ioannēs ho baptizōn, known as the prophet Yahya in the Qur'an ) was a Jewish itinerant preacher in the early first century AD and is revered as a major religious figure along with Christianity, also in Islam, the Bahá'í Faith, and Mandaeism. He is called a prophet by all of these traditions, and honoured as a saint in many Christian traditions.
John used baptism as the central sacrament of his messianic movement. Most scholars agree that John baptized Jesus. Scholars generally believe Jesus was a follower or disciple of John and several New Testament accounts report that some of Jesus' early followers had previously been followers of John. John the Baptist is also mentioned by the Jewish historian Josephus. Some scholars maintain that John was influenced by the semi-ascetic Essenes, who expected an apocalypse and practiced rituals corresponding strongly with baptism, although no direct evidence substantiates this.

This video was filmed from behind the Altar at St. John The Baptist Greek Orthodox Church in Tampa, FL. The Eastern Orthodox Christian Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom is the ancient, Christian Communion service, celebrated at least once each week in all Orthodox Christian churches throughout the world. The Orthodox Church is also known as the "Early Church" or the "Apostolic Church." It was originally founded on the Day of Pentecost in 33 A.D. Most Orthodox Christian churches are categorized by their country of origin. For example, the Greek Orthodox Church originally came from St. Paul, who was the first to preach Christianity in Greece. We are so pleased to bring you our very first Greek Wedding Film of the most wonderful couple, Niki and Billy. Ohhh, how I love this culture and this couple!! Not only was I completely mesmerized by the many traditional dances ( I could watch those all day), but the mass amount of symbolism throughout the entire wedding day had me in awe. I began to wish I were Greek. The day began with one of Billy's groomsman delivering Niki's shoes to her on a silver platter surrounded by almonds (a symbol of fertility) and money being stuffed into her shoes until she attained the "perfect fit"...the more money, the better the fit (see why I would like to be Greek). Billy had some traditions of his own. His mother poured a cup of wine, in which he took three sips of and then threw the cup behind h...
