James Joseph "Jim" Croce (/ˈkroʊtʃi/; January 10, 1943 – September 20, 1973) was an American folk and popular rock singer of the late 1960s and early 1970s. Between 1966 and 1973, Croce released five studio albums and 11 singles. His singles "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown" and "Time in a Bottle" both reached No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart.
Croce was born in South Philadelphia, to James Albert Croce and his wife Flora Mary (née Babucci), both Italian Americans. Croce took a strong interest in music at a young age. At five, he learned to play his first song on the accordion, "Lady of Spain."
Croce attended Upper Darby High School in Upper Darby Township, Pennsylvania. After graduating in 1960, he studied at Malvern Preparatory School for a year before enrolling at Villanova University, where he majored in psychology and minored in German. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in 1965. Croce was a member of the Villanova Singers and the Villanova Spires. When the Spires performed off-campus or made recordings, they were known as The Coventry Lads. Croce was also a student disc jockey at WKVU (which has since become WXVU).

This is especially evident in listening to his album tracks, many of which are remarkably potent and arguably could have been hits them...

In the music industry, arguably the worst tragedy that can befall an artist is to die in their prime, when he or she is just beginning to break through to the mainstream and reach people on a national level. One such artist was Jim Croce, a songwriter with a knack for both upbeat, catchy singles and empathetic, melancholy ballads. Though Croce only recorded a few studio albums before an untimely plane crash, he continues to be remembered posthumously. Croce appealed to fans as a common man, and it was not a gimmick -- he was a father and husband who went through a series of blue-collar jobs. And whether he used dry wit, gentle emotions, or sorrow, Croce sang with a rare form of honesty and power. Few artists have ever been able to pull off such down-to-earth storytelling as convincingly as...

Jim Croce (January 10, 1943 -- September 20, 1973) was an American singer-songwriter. Between 1966 and 1973, Croce released five studio albums and 11 singles. His singles "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown" and "Time in a Bottle" were both number one hits on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. On September 20, 1973, the day that his ABC single "I Got a Name" was released, Croce, Muehleisen, and four others were killed in the crash of a chartered Beechcraft E18S upon takeoff from the Natchitoches Regional Airport in Natchitoches, Louisiana. Croce had just completed a concert at Northwestern State University's Prather Coliseum in Natchitoches and was flying to Sherman, Texas, for a concert at Austin College, when the plane crashed about an hour after the end of the concert.

Paul & Craig play "Working at the Carwash Blues" by Jim Croce at the Vinyl Revival open mic, 2016-10 19 Well, I had just got out from the county prison Doin' ninety days for non-support Tried to find me an executive position But no matter how smooth I talked They wouldn't listen to the fact that I was a genius The man say, "We got all that we can use." Now I got them steadily depressin', low down mind messin' Working at the car wash blues Well, I should be sittin' in an air conditioned office in a swivel chair Talkin' some trash to the secretaries Sayin', "Here, now mama, come on over here." Instead, I'm stuck here rubbin' these fenders with a rag And walkin' home in soggy old shoes With them steadily depressin', low down mind messin' Workin' at the car wash blues You know a man of my...
[Lyrics Jim Croce - Nobody Loves a Fat Girl] Nobody loves a fat girl But oh how a fat girl can love Nobody seems to want me I'm just a truck upon the highway of love I'm all alone inside of my form When every ounce of me is dyin' to keep somebody warm Nobody loves a fat girl But oh how a fat girl can love Nobody loves a fat girl But oh how a fat girl can love Nobody seems to want me I'm just a truck upon the highway of love The only game I can get the boys to play Is to have them sit around and try to guess how much I weigh Nobody loves a fat girl But oh how a fat girl can love, pretty mama Oh how a fat girl can love
[Lyrics Jim Croce - Photographs and Memories] Photographs and memories Christmas cards you sent to me All that I have are these To remember you Memories that come at night Take me to another time Back to a happier day When I called you mine But we sure had a good time When we started way back when Morning walks and bedroom talks Oh how I loved you then Summer skies and lullabies Nights we couldn't say good-bye And of all of the things that we knew Not a dream survived Photographs and memories All the love you gave to me Somehow it just can't be true That's all I've left of you But we sure had a good time When we started way back when Morning walks and bedroom talks Oh how I loved you then
[Lyrics Jim Croce - Operator Thats Not the Way It Feels] Operator, well could you help me place this call? See, the number on the matchbook is old and faded. She's living in L. A. with my best old ex-friend Ray, A guy she said she knew well and sometimes hated. Isn't that the way they say it goes? Well, let's forget all that And give me the number if you can find it, So I can call just to tell 'em I'm fine and to show I've overcome the blow, I've learned to take it well I only wish my words could just convince myself That it just wasn't real, but that's not the way it feels. Operator, well could you help me place this call? Well, I can't read the number that you just gave me. There's something in my eyes, you know it happens every time I think about a love that I thought would save me. ...
Cigarettes, whiskey and wild, wild women
They'll drive you crazy, they'll drive you insane
Cigarettes, whiskey and wild wild women
They'll drive you crazy, they'll drive you insane
Once I was happy and had a good wife
I had enough money to last me for life
I met with a girl and we went on a spree
She taught me to smoke and drink whiskey
Cigarettes, whiskey and wild, wild women
They'll drive you crazy, they'll drive you insane
Cigarettes, whiskey and wild wild women
They'll drive you crazy, they'll drive you insane
And now I'm feeble and broken with age
The lines on my face make a well written page
I'm leaving this story, how sad but how true
On women and whiskey and what they will do
Cigarettes, whiskey and wild, wild women
They'll drive you crazy, they'll drive you insane
Cigarettes, whiskey and wild wild women
They'll drive you crazy, they'll drive you insane
Write on the cross at the head of my grave
'For women and whiskey, here lies a poor slave
Take warning, dear stranger, take warning, dear friend'
Then write in big letters these words at the end
Cigarettes, whiskey and wild, wild women
They'll drive you crazy, they'll drive you insane
Cigarettes, whiskey and wild wild women
