"So I was in me jocks, jumped in me car and started chasing him up the street," he told Seven Network on Friday.
Mr McConnell, who was flown from Brisbane to Sydney for the interview on the Sunrise program, said people had been asking for his autograph.
But he credited his wife for his new-found "superstar" status, saying if she hadn't woken him up he never would have ended up helping police catch the driver.
