Motorcyclist cheats death after being trapped under wheel of truck at Dee Why

“I’ve never seen someone come so close to death.”

That’s how Stieve de Lance described what could have been a horrifying end for a motorcyclist who came off his trail bike and slid under a turning truck in Dee Why this morning.

Incredibly, the motorcyclist was not run over by any of the large truck’s wheels but was briefly trapped because one of the truck’s wheels was on top of his backpack, which was still strapped to his back.

Northern Beaches duty officer Insp Nigel Taylor said the motorcyclist, aged in his 20s, was able to free himself and was assessed at the scene by paramedics before being taken to Manly Hospital for treatment.

Stieve de Lance said the truck was heading south on Pittwater Rd about 9.25am and was turning left into Oaks Ave when the motorcyclist rode up on the inside lane and slid under the truck.

“The bike went under the first two sets of wheels and as the rider fell, he fell forward a bit, which saved his life,” she said.

“He was pinned under the front wheel by his backpack.

“His backpack was under the wheel and it was still strapped to his back.

“He was inches from being under the wheel.

“After he got up he was limping, probably from a bruised leg.

“I couldn’t believe he survived it.

“I’ve never seen someone come so close to death.”
