High Five: The Songs You Need To Hear This Week

We're in the final days of Ausmusic Month and what a month it's been - J Awards, triplejunearthed.com's 10th birthday, a wealth of killer local feature albums. But it 's the songs that are the real stars and there's been some great ones released recently.

A.B. ORIGINAL - 'DUMB THINGS {FT. PAUL KELLY & DAN SULTAN}'

Another highlight of Ausmusic Month has been the Like A Versions, and this morning's was too good not to include in the High Five. Briggs & Trials teamed up with Paul Kelly to cover his own tune 'Dumb Things' and the rappers added their own incredibly powerful, poignant verses to this Aussie classic.

ASTA - 'SHINE'

At a time when pop music defaults to bass drops and squiggly synth lines lifted from a Dillon Francis song, it's refreshing to hear Asta come up with something a little different. Taking cues from house and funk, 'Shine' does what it says on the tin - and brightly too.

CAMP COPE - 'KEEP GROWING'

Just months after releasing their self-titled, J Award-nominated debut, Camp Cope return with 'Keep Growing'. It's a song about heartbreak - sure, nothing new there - but Camp Cope seem to be able to shine a different light on it in their own inimitable way. "'Keep Growing' is about new beginnings, it's about rejecting what society tells you is beautiful," wrote singer Georgia Maq on Facebook. "The best advice I ever got was 'do you', and that's kinda the message of this song."

O' LITTLE SISTER - 'COLD FEET'

Don't let the title fool you, this is beautifully warm music from Brisbane's O' Little Sister. It's like I've discovered someone's secret cassette recording. It feels that intimate.

SAN MEI - 'REWIND'

Gold Coast's San Mei has taken her indie pop style and completely doused it in fuzz, adding a sense of urgency and energy that propels 'Rewind' along like a fired rocket.

High Five: The Songs You Need To Hear This Week

If you're a meticulous checker of this weekly blog - and thank you if you are - then apologies for missing last week. I was out of the office, blah blah, excuses excuses. But, the main thing is, it's back this week and I've got some crackers for you to check out.

ALEX THE ASTRONAUT - 'ALREADY HOME'

It's fitting that an artist with the name Alex The Astronaut is borrowing a few aesthetic tricks from David Bowie's 'Space Oddity'. It's a sweet tune from this Sydneysider who's currently in New York studying maths and physics. It also contains a very prescient lyric about billionaire presidents.

AUSTEN - 'Darkside'

It's only the second release from Brisbane's Austen but, damn, it's a good one. The way this song builds, it creeps up on you before totally enveloping you with that killer chorus.

LAZERTITS - 'BOSS BITCH'

And in strides a late contender for the Best Lyrics of 2016. Brat-punkers Lazertits have come up with a song that's both hilarious and poignant - and humour is a great Trojan Horse to get an important message across.

LONELYSPECK - 'ALL MY SKIN ON THE AIR'

This absolute gem of a tune comes from Adelaide producer Lonelyspeck, who imbues a tidalwave of emotion into their music. It's an evocative song, from its title to the soaring guitar solo that comes in around 3 minutes in. It'll make you feel something, that's for sure.

NICK MURPHY - 'STOP ME (STOP YOU)'

I, for one, am loving the new direction he's taking since changing his name from Chet Faker. There's an energy, a presence and a boldness to his new sound. This one's quite the journey; a song in two parts which reference each other.

High Five: The Songs You Need To Hear This Week

Some of the best music of the week has come from acts that start with the letters I or S.

I KNOW LEOPARD - 'RATHER BE LONELY'

Sydney's I Know Leopard have a habit of lush, dreaming indie pop songs that float like cumulonimbus clouds. 'Rather Be Lonely' is similarly buoyant, embellished with synthesisers that twinkle and sparkle like stars in the night sky.

IV LEAGUE - 'BLEACHED'

Melbourne's IV League whacked this gem on triple j Unearthed a year to the day since their last upload. 'Bleached' is a gritty, gutsy number, harbouring a sense of defiance within its guitared walls.

SAM WESTON - 'DON'T SAVE FACE'

Deliciously retro, Sam Weston's 'Don't Save Face' was written during his time in outback South Australia and because he had limited access to electricity for his synthesisers, the song's ended up more sample-based than his previous releases. The loops give it a hypnotic feel, which is good because this is not a short ride.

SLUM SOCIABLE - 'NAME CALL'

There's something melancholic about this song. Maybe it's that whistling line. I imagine someone whistling it while walking along an empty street on a cloudy day, kicking a can mindlessly. And that bass line too. So much groove. Nice work Slum Sociable.

ST. SOUTH - 'LOVER'

St. South's songs are delicate but not fragile. Maybe it's the space she affords her compositions: nothing's too cluttered, opting for simple, minimalist beats and keys, letting the melodies and lyrics take centre stage.

Happy Friday! Here's some new Australian music for you to take a listen to.

CORIN - 'VOID'

Cold and sharp, as though it were made for a club built entirely into an ice cave, 'Void' by Corin is a challenging but mesmerising piece of electronic music.

FOREIGN/NATIONAL - 'SO SENTIMENTAL'

Imagine a chilled-out Unknown Mortal Orchestra and you're part way towards the music of Melbourne's Foreign/National. This has such a sweet lethargic groove to it. And flute. Yes, flute!

MANSIONAIR - 'EASIER'

I played this on the show the other night and someone on the text line described it as a "gentle banger" and that's so on the money.

THE TAPES - 'YOU KNOW IT'S REAL'

The constant pulse of this song would make it a great driving soundtrack. I can imagine the dotted white line flashing beside the car to the beat of 'You Know It's Real'. Plus those melodies are very, very nice indeed.

TIMOTHY NELSON - 'WE NEVER CHANGE'

One of Perth's favourite and most prolific sons Timothy Nelson (of The Infidels and High Horse fame) is gearing up for the release of his debut solo album and this is a stunning, melancholic song adorned with country twists and beautiful melodies.

Five great songs for you to check out this weekend.

BILLY DAVIS - 'NO LONGER LOVERS'

Billy Davis is the brainchild of Will Rimington, who can corral up to 11 musicians to bring his Billy Davis project to life on stage. On record it recalls the soul-hop of The Internet and Anderson .Paak and, yep, it's a smooth listen. It's like lying in a bed with silk sheets - you know, if silk sheets weren't so sleazy.

DEEP SEA ARCADE - 'LEARNING TO FLY'

After lineup changes and a few years in the musical wilderness, Deep Sea Arcade have returned with the dreamy 'Learning To Fly'. From the Mellotron to the Theremin solo, the Sydney lads channel their love of the '60s into this sweet, sweet pop tune.

DREAM ON DREAMER - 'STAY'

"Epic" is a very overused adjective when it comes to music these days, but there's something definitely epic about the new Dream On Dreamer tune. Maybe it's the weighty guitar riffs, the haunting choir or the chorus that sounds like it's being sung in the pouring rain, but 'Stay' is quite the monolithic tune.

GEORGE MAPLE - 'LOVER'

Conjuring up the kind of dark sensuality that Prince was mining on Sign 'O' The Times, George Maple's latest tune is - admittedly - a bit of a slow burner. It's not as immediate as some of her previous tracks, but what Jess Higgs has done so well on 'Lover' is marry the production, the melodies and the lyrics into one beautiful, dark, coherent package.

TIA GOSTELOW - 'VAGUE UTOPIA'

Since Unearthed High wrapped up a few months ago, our finalists have continued to give us fantastic new music: first Gretta Ray, then Lastlings, and now Tia Gostelow, who also took out the inaugural Unearthed High Indigenous Award. 'Vague Utopia' blooms with melody, sitting somewhere between Fleet Foxes and Fleetwood Mac, a song about being on the cusp of adulthood.

It's Friday! Time to catch up on some of the week's best new Australian songs.

B-TOWN WARRIORS - 'PEOPLE OF THE RED SUNSET'

For years Desert Pea Media has been discovering incredible Indigenous talent in all parts of the country. B-Town Warriors is the latest project, featuring a group of students from Bourke High School. 'People Of The Red Sunset' is filled with positive vibes and an infectious energy.

DRO CAREY - 'ELEVATE {FT. CADELL & CHOCOLATE}'

Taking influence from UK grime and garage, Sydney producer Dro Carey has teamed up with Wiley's little brother Cadell and Sydney-based MC Chocolate to come up with this post-midnight banger.

HERZELOYDE - 'CLURB'

...and the award for the most fun song of the week goes to Melbourne producer Herzeloyde and his retro-inspired 'Clurb'. It's great to hear someone bringing back chiptune (a style of music inspired by 8-bit computer game soundtracks of the '80s and '90s) and combining it with modern trap production.

POND - 'SWEEP ME OFF MY FEET'

Psych wizards Pond have returned with the first taste of their forthcoming seventh album (yeah, these guys are prolific) and it's a song that's as dreamy and kaleidoscopic as anything they've released before. You probably won't be surprised to learn that Kevin Parker has produced the track: those synths sounds like they could've featured on Currents.

TIRED LION - 'AGORAPHOBIA'

Grunge revivalists Tired Lion once again conjure the spirit of '90s-era Billy Corgan on 'Agoraphobia', a song about dealing with mental illness. You can get the full story behind the song here.

A couple of tunes for your weekend!

BIRDZ - 'BLACK LIVES MATTER'

Following on from his great track with Jimblah, 'Rise', Birdz brings the fire once again on the potent and poignant 'Black Lives Matter'.

GRETTA RAY - 'UNWIND'

The brand new song from this year's Unearthed High champ is an absolute winner, displaying Gretta's incredible talent for writing complex, intelligent melodies as well as her knock-out voice. The future of Australian music is in safe hands.

JACK RIVER - 'PALO ALTO'

Drive straight into summer with this jam from Jack River. 'Palo Alto' follows on from the dreamy 'Talk Like That' and will feature on her debut EP Highway Songs No. 2 which'll be out next Friday.

MADDY JANE - 'DROWN IT OUT'

From the state that birthed Courtney Barnett comes Maddy Jane. Certainly they share a similar vibe, particularly on this tune 'Drown It Out', but it's hard to deny that the Hobart local's come up with a helluva catchy tune.

NULL - 'IN UNITY'

Taking cues from '90s electronic legends The Chemical Brothers, The Prodigy and Orbital, Null's latest tune 'In Unity' is a banger in the truest sense of the world.

High Five: The Songs You Need To Hear This Week

After a little bit of a hiatus, the High Five is back! So what are some of the best Australian songs that have been released recently?

CONFIDENCE MAN - 'BOYFRIEND (REPEAT)'

Whoo boy, if you need some extra confidence in your life then crank this in your headphones. This is a groove you can strut to. It's like LCD Soundsystem and Tom Tom Club (a great band from the '80s) casually came together and created a funky baby.

DREAM RIMMY - 'LANDSLIDE'

The music of Dream Rimmy envelops you with its wall of guitars, floating vocals and mellifluous melodies. 'Landslide' is their latest offering, channeling their love of '90s indie and shoegaze into a song that sweeps you up... well, like a landslide.

DUMB PUNTS - 'SPACE WASTER'

I'm not sure what I love most about this song, but maybe it's how Seattle Gallagher half-deadpans the hook "you're a waste of space" like the titular space waster isn't even worth the full effort.

MERE WOMEN - 'DRIVE'

Jagged chorus scythe through the tumbling drums on Mere Women's dark and unnerving new tune 'Drive'.

SEEKAE - 'TURBINE BLUE'

Seekae have certainly evolved their sound from the glitchy vibes of their 2009 debut Sound Of Trees Falling On People (which is worth your time checking out if you haven't). Although the aesthetic is very different, their attention to detail hasn't changed. Everything feels meticulously sculpted on the melancholic crooner 'Turbine Blue'.
