Ex-Eagle's plea to Ben Cousins: 'You can't help someone who can't help himself'

A former Eagles teammate of troubled former AFL star Ben Cousins has made an emotional plea to the fallen Brownlow Medallist, boldly claiming "you can't help someone who can't help himself".

Cousins has been in Royal Perth Hospital since he was involved in a crash with a truck in High Wycombe about 1.30am on Wednesday.

Ben Cousins in hospital after High Wycombe crash

There are reports troubled footballer Ben Cousins is in hospital after he was involved in a crash near High Wycombe. Vision: Nine News Perth.

The 38-year-old was charged on Thursday morning but it is not clear if he will be given a bedside hearing at RPH where he is receiving medical attention, or if he will attend Perth Magistrates Court.

On Tuesday, he was charged with breaching his bail and possessing methamphetamine after he failed to show in court.

Talking to TAB Radio on Thursday morning, Michael Braun said he had reached out to Cousins on a number of occasions.

"I speak to him once every couple of weeks via text or on the phone and I'm doing all I can to get him involved in our circle of friends from '06, in terms of Embers (Andrew Embley), Coxy (Dean Cox), Glassy (Darren Glass) and all these blokes we see on a regular basis," he said.

"And the footy club is right behind him... he's got so many people he can reach out too, unfortunately at this stage you can't help someone who can't help himself."

Braun, who played 228 games for the Eagles, said it was "sad" seeing his former teammate struggling.

"He's still a fantastic guy and it's really sad to see him going through what he is doing and we are all here to help him," he said.

"It's just sad to see such a tremendous bloke going through what he is going through.

"Apart from that, it was good to see Chicky (Daniel Chick) at the 06 reunion and we all had a good time reminiscing ...we all grew a few inches in terms of stature and exaggerated about how good we were."

While Cousins' lawyer said earlier in the week his client couldn't attend court on Tuesday because he was too sick to appear, he was unable to provide the presiding Magistrate with a medical certificate.

During his first court appearance on October 18, Cousins' lawyer said he was "actually in a very good place at the moment", as the ex-AFL star appeared agitated and fidgety after spending a night in custody at the Perth Watch House.

He was arrested on October 17 at an address in Canning Vale and charged with two counts of breaching a violence restraining order taken out by the mother of his two children, Maylea Tinecheff, and carrying methamphetamine.

Cousins has had drug issues throughout his career and after it ended in 2010.
