The Golden Age of Mexican Cinema, Part 2
Richard Saiz
Friday, 1-3 p.m.
Explore five key films that represent the most significant period of Mexican classical cinema during the 1940s and 50s. Watch and discuss how these films reflect key social and political indicators of Mexico’s period of growth and modernization. The course will focus on how some of the original themes, genres, and motifs that emerged in the 1930s evolved during this period.
Richard Saiz is a veteran of commercial and public media and documentary director and has won several awards, including the duPont-Columbia and best documentary from the San Francisco Film Festival. He has conducted workshops in the United States, Cuba, and Brazil. As a programming manager for the Independent Television Service, he worked with directors and writers in developing fictions films for public television.

From the mid-1930s to the late 1950s, Mexican cinema became the most successful Latin American cinema and the leading Spanish-language film industry in the world. Many Cine de Oro (Golden Age cinema) films adhered to the dominant Hollywood model, but a small yet formidable filmmaking faction rejected Hollywood’s paradigm outright.
Directors Fernando de Fuentes, Emilio Fernández, Luis Buñuel, Juan Bustillo Oro, Adolfo Best Maugard, and Julio Bracho sought to create a unique national cinema that, through the stories it told and the ways it told them, was wholly Mexican. The Classical Mexican Cinema traces the emergence and evolution of this Mexican cinematic aesthetic, a distinctive film form designed to express lo mexicano.
The book is scheduled to release Sept. 1. Ramírez Berg is a professor in the Department of Radio-Television-Film at The University of Texas at Austin, where he's won every major teaching award.

The history of Mexican cinema goes back to the ending of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th, when several enthusiasts of the new medium documented historical events – most particularly the Mexican Revolution – and produced some movies that have only recently been rediscovered. During the Golden Age of Mexican cinema, Mexico all but dominated the Latin American film industry. The Guadalajara International Film Festival is the most prestigious Latin American film festival and is held annually In Guadalajara, Mexico. Mexico has twice won the highest honor in the Palme d'Or, having won the Grand Prix for Maria Candelaria in 1946 and the Palme d'Or in 1961 for Viridiana, more than any other Latin American nation.
The "silent film" industry in Mexico produced several movies; however, many of the films up to the 1920s have been lost and were not well documented. The first "moving picture", according to sources by film historian Jim Mora, was viewed in 1895 using Thomas Edison's kinetoscope. A year later, the cinematographe projector was introduced by Auguste Lumière. Mexico's first queues appeared in cinemas in the capital to see international one-minute films such as The Card Players, Arrival of a Train, and The Magic Hat.

A golden age is a period in a field of endeavour when great tasks were accomplished. The term originated from early Greek and Roman poets who used to refer to a time when mankind lived in a better time and was pure (see Golden Age).
A society's Golden Age marks that period in its history having a heightened output of art, science, literature, and philosophy.
A golden age is often ascribed to the years immediately following some technological innovation. It is during this time that writers and artists ply their skills to this new medium. Therefore, there are Golden Ages of both radio and television. During this nascent phase the technology allows new ideas to be expressed, as new art forms flower quickly into new areas:

He has conducted workshops in the United States, Cuba, and Brazil. As a programming manager for the Independent Television Service, he worked with directors and writers in developing fictions films for public television.

From the mid-1930s to the late 1950s, Mexican cinema became the most successful Latin American cinema and the leading Spanish-language film industry in the world. Many Cine de Oro (Golden Age cinema) films adhered to the dominant Hollywood model, but a small yet formidable filmmaking faction rejected Hollywood’s paradigm outright.
Directors Fernando de Fuentes, Emilio Fernández, Luis Buñuel, Juan Bustillo Oro, Adolfo Best Maugard, and Julio Bracho sought to create a unique national cinema that, through the stories it told and the ways it told them, was wholly Mexican. The Classical Mexican Cinema traces the emergence and evolution of this Mexican cinematic aesthetic, a distinctive film form designed to express lo mexicano.
The book is scheduled to release Sept. 1. Ramírez Berg is a professor in the Department of Radio-Television-Film at The University of Texas at Austin, where he's won every major teaching award.

Dr. Robert Irwin, Chair of the Graduate Group in Cultural Studies and Professor of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of California, Davis, offered a keynote presentation at the UNM Latin American & Iberian Institute's conference on "1920s to 2020s: To Hollywood and Back Again: Latin American Cinema & Gender in a Global Context," which was held February 6-7, 2014, at the University of New Mexico.
This paper summarizes several patterns of representation of foreigners in Mexican Golden Age cinema: the "savage" rumbera and the "crazy" Argentine seen from the gaze of rational Mexican masculinity. These characters were produced and reproduced at a moment in which the most widely disseminated images of Cuba worldwide came from Mexican cinema: "la piña madura," the untamable mulatta, "la bien pegada," while the greatest star of Argentine cinema abandoned her homeland at the very time that this industry definitively lost its battle for continental dominance to its Mexican competition, which absorbed Libertad Lamarque, redefining her image: no longer America's girlfriend but an abject figure: "la loca," "la marquesa del barrio." With its "imposition" in the 1940s, Mexican cinema assumed astonishing control of the images of other Latin American countries whose resources were insufficient to manage their own representation to the world.

The Los Cabos International Baja Film Festival announced their official list of films ready to be screened during this 3rd annual celebration.
The Festival will honor the memory of Master Gabriel Figueroa, one of the greatest movie makers from the golden age of Mexican Cinema.
National and international celebrities have been confirmed and hope this event will attract more interest than last year's festival.
Due to the challenges presented by the aftermath of Hurricane Odile, the committee and sponsors decided to reduce prices even more for the local audience. Tickets will be available in Cinemex for only $20.00 pesos. They will also give away 7,000 courtesy tickets to all Cinemex projections during the festival, 500 courtesy tickets for the galas, and 800 courtesy tickets for the closing ceremony. Distribution points will be available in San Jose del Cabo, Cabo San Lucas, and La Paz.
This year three new categories will be part of this important festival. These new sections are PLAN B, DOWN, and GREEN PERSPECTIVE. PLAN B will show case those movies with musical concepts, and proposing new concepts that will capture the attention from its spectators. DOWN will project the best from the suspense, thriller, and acid humor genres in conceptual cinema. GREEN PERSPECTIVE will project 3 documentaries about environmental issues around the globe in order to create awareness.

Elhaik is a media anthropologist, film curator, and assistant professor of media and culture at San Francisco State University. He works on transnational avant-gardes, media arts, and curatorial platforms in Latin America, the Arab World, and the Mediterranean.
His writings have appeared in numerous books and journals, and he has authored The Incurable-Image: Curating Post-Mexican Film & Media Arts (forthcoming from Edinburgh University Press).
Elhaik is currently part of a collaborative team of researchers, hosted by the Los Angeles Film Forum and funded by the Getty Foundation, that will curate and edit an anthology on experimental cinema and media in Latin America.

Nueva York is an Emmy award winning series about Latino culture in New York. The 30-minute show explores the rich textures of Latino society in the city, focusing on politics, art, culture, and the traditions of Spanish-speaking populations across the metropolitan area. Each episode features prominent leaders from the tri-state area's cultural and public spheres sharing their thoughts and accomplishments with viewers. Interviews are hosted by Mexican novelist and critic Carmen Boullosa and Chilean journalist and writer Patricio Lerzundi.
