Holiday-makers can also snap up a bargain on the newest, biggest and most technologically advanced ship to call Australia home, Ovation of the Seas.

The US$1 billion ship arrives in Australia next month and the Black Friday sale includes an eight-night round trip from Sydney leaving on February 9, 2017 and calling at Hobart and Adelaide, priced from $1299 a person.

The Royal Caribbean sale features selected voyages departing between January 13, 2017 and April 22, 2017.

Those who grab the deals can give thanks to Thanksgiving — the US tradition started by the Pilgrims who sailed on the Mayflower from England to Cape Cod in present-day Massachusetts to escape religious persecution. Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving and for about the past century has been regarded as the beginning of the US Christmas shopping season, when major retailers open early and run major sales over the following weekend.

Guests will find Ovation of the Seas a far cry from the Mayflower. The fourth biggest ship in the world can carry almost 5000 guests, has 18 dining options, facilities such as a surf simulator, dodgem cars and skydiving experience, Broadway-style theatre shows and the gondola-like North Star capsule rising high above the entire ship.

The Mayflower carried about 130 passengers and crew, had a main level, cargo hold and gun deck — this is where the passengers resided near the cannons, using a ladder to get to the main deck and a bucket as a toilet.

After a two month voyage, following religious persecution, it was little wonder the Pilgrim settlers wanted to give thanks following a good harvest in a new world.
