Plot: Al and Elsa have been a couple for some time, but the chances that their relationship will be long-lived are few. For one thing, Al is appallingly dependent on Elsa for his every emotional need. For another, Elsa is an incredibly elusive person, extremely difficult to pin down about anything - especially whatever is bothering her. How they have managed to survive this long is a cause for wonder. When Al gets an opportunity to be cast in a movie role, complete with no-cost occupancy in the casting agent's ugly but fashionable apartment, he jumps at the chance to provide a little material satisfaction for his beloved Elsa. But what exactly does she want?

Quotes:
Dr. Jonathan Hemlock: You still here?::Pope: Now really, you don't expect me to just walk out that door, do you, sweetheart?::Dr. Jonathan Hemlock: Door or window, it's your choice.
[Hemlock throws Pope out of his office]::Dr. Jonathan Hemlock: Don't for get your trench coat. How's anybody gonna recognize you without your disguise?
Miss Cerberus: I was expecting you before this. Mr. Dragon does not like to be kept waiting.::Dr. Jonathan Hemlock: Oh, the impatient albino.::Miss Cerberus: I don't think Mr. Dragon's affliction is a joking matter.::Dr. Jonathan Hemlock: I thought it was rather humorous, myself. A spy network being run by a bloodless freak who can't stand light or cold.::Miss Cerberus: Or germs. Are you healthy?::Dr. Jonathan Hemlock: Should I turn my head and cough?::Miss Cerberus: No known infections?::Dr. Jonathan Hemlock: Nothing other than the usual, syphilis, running sores, and the clap.
Jonathan Hemlock: However you never know. Sometimes people do things they thought they'd never do again. Like rape, for instance. Yeah I thought I'd given up rape but I've changed my mind.
[Referring to Hemlock's written assessment]::Jemima Brown: Crap?::Jonathan Hemlock: Excuse me? You did just start this conversation off by saying crap didn't you?
Jonathan Hemlock: I can't believe that you're a stewardess.::Jemima Brown: Actually I'm not, I'm a skyjacker in a drag.::Jonathan Hemlock: Oh, that's reassuring, just give your name and I report you to the proper authorities when we land.::Jemima Brown: Jemima::Jonathan Hemlock: And I'm Uncle Ben...::Jemima Brown: I'm serious, that's really my name... Jemima Brown, my mother was hooked on being ethnic.::Jonathan Hemlock: Or else turned on by a pancake. As long as we both agree that it's to much for a black chick to have the name of Jemima.::Jemima Brown: Well I don't know, I mean people don't forget you when you name is Jemima.::Jemima Brown: I don't think people would forget you if your name was Alfred.
Dr. Jonathan Hemlock: It's dangerous, child, to come to conclusions when you don't have any facts. Now let me lay some on you. Sure Dragon knows what he's doing, just like he knew what he was doing when he worked for the Nazis during World War II.::Jemima Brown: What?::Dr. Jonathan Hemlock: Oh, you didn't know that, did you? Yes your "wrap him up in red, white, and blue" Mr. Dragon's a goddamn Hessian, that's what he is. And he'd sell out the other side as fast as he'd sell out our side. And he'd sell out his mother, too, if the bloodless freak had one.
Dr. Jonathan Hemlock: You think it's so awful the other side has a germ formula? It's against the Geneva Convention, isn't it, and they stole it from us. Well what the hell are we doing with it in the first place? We're not supposed to have one either.::Jemima Brown: And you don't see any difference between their side and our side?::Dr. Jonathan Hemlock: Yeah, I see a difference. But as long as we have Dragon and Pope working for us, how bad can the other side be?
Dr. Jonathan Hemlock: You betrayed the both of us in Asia, and we lived, no thanks to you. Now you people have killed Henri in Zurich.::Miles Mellough: I didn't actually kill him, you know.::Dr. Jonathan Hemlock: Well I probably won't *actually* kill you.::Miles Mellough: That's very little comfort.
[Hemlock strands Mellough in the middle of the desert]::Miles Mellough: Jonathan, you're not going to leave me out here? Oh, Jonathan, for chrissakes, kill me but don't leave me here!

Quotes:
Robert Conway: I think I'm going to like it here.
[last lines]::Lord Gainsford: Gentlemen, I give you a toast. Here's my hope that Robert Conway will find his Shangri-La. Here's my hope that we all find our Shangri-La.
[a content Conway concluding a romantic interlude with Sondra]::Robert Conway: You know, when we were on that plane, I was fascinated by the way the shadow followed us. That silly shadow! Racing along over mountains and valleys, covering ten times the distance of the plane, and yet always there to greet us... with outstretched arms when we landed. And I've been thinking that, somehow, you're that plane, and I'm that silly shadow. That all my life I've been rushing up and down hills, leaping rivers, crashing over obstacles, never dreaming that one day that beautiful thing in flight would land on this earth and into my arms.
High Lama: I wanted to meet the Conway who in one of his books said: "There are moments in every mans life, when he glimpses the eternal". That Conway seemed to belong here.
High Lama: It is the entire meaning and purpose of Shangri-La. It came to me in a vision, long, long ago. I saw all the nations strengthening, not in wisdom, but in the vulgar passions and the will to destroy. I saw the machine power multiplying, until a single weaponed man might match a whole army. I foresaw a time when man, exalting in the technique of murder, would rage so hotly over the world, that every book, every treasure, would be doomed to destruction. This vision was so vivid and so moving, that I determined to gather together all things of beauty and of culture that I could, and preserve them here, against the doom toward which the world is rushing. Look at the world today. Is there anything more pitiful? What madness there is! What blindness! What unintelligent leadership! A scurrying mass of bewildered humanity, crashing headlong against each other, propelled by an orgy of greed and brutality. A time must come my friend, when this orgy will spend itself. When brutality and the lust for power must perish by its own sword. Against that time, is why I avoided death, and am here. And why you were brought here. For when that day comes, the world must begin to look for a new life. And it is our hope that they may find it here. For here, we shall be with their books and their music, and a way of life based on one simple rule: Be Kind! When that day comes, it is our hope that the brotherly love of Shangri-La will spread throughout the world. Yes, my son; When the strong have devoured each other, the Christian ethic may at last be fulfilled and the meek shall inherit the earth.::Robert Conway: I understand you father.
Robert Conway: George, didn't you ever want to know what's on the other side of the mountain?
Chang: Age is a limit we impose upon ourselves. You know, each time you Westerners celebrate your birthday, you build another fence around your minds.
Alexander P. 'Lovey' Lovett: Conway, I don't like this place! It's too mysterious!
[first lines]::Book Pages: In these days of wars and rumors of wars - haven't you ever dreamed of a place where there was peace and security, where living was not a struggle but a lasting delight? / Of course you have. So has every man since time began. Always the same dream. Sometimes he calls it Utopia - Sometimes the Fountain of Youth - Sometimes merely "that little chicken farm." / One man had such a dream and saw it come true. He was Robert Conway - England's "Man of the East" - soldier, diplomat, public hero. / Our story starts in the war-torn Chinese city of Baskul, where Robert Conway has been sent to evacuate ninety white people before they are butchered in a local revolution. / Baskul - the night of March 10, 1935.
Alexander P. 'Lovey' Lovett: [seeing banquet spread] Well I, I just feel as though I'm being made ready for the executioner.::Barnard: [sniffing foods] Yeah, well if this be executioner, lead me to it.::Alexander P. 'Lovey' Lovett: That's what they do with cattle, just before the slaughter.
