Rumblings in Sooke (BC, Canada) Sparks Mystery - CTV News - January 25, 2012
"VICTORIA -- In the last 48 hours a number of people in Sooke have reported feeling powerful tremors that some believe are an earthquake. "I heard what sounded like a freight train coming, that rumble, and it was very brief. My bed actually shifted," one Sooke homeowner told CTV News. Seismologists say there are no indications of an earthquake in the Sooke area and all calling the recent reports a mystery. On Wednesday several employees downtown felt similar shaking but believed it was a result of blasting at a downtown construction site. Alison Bird with the Pacific Geo Science Centre says, "It would have to be an extremely large explosion for people in Sooke to feel the Victoria blast". The District of Sooke, the Sooke Fire Department, and the RCMP were all contacted but were unable to shed any light on the rumblings. The Department of National Defense also denied have any part in the tremors. South of the border the Whidbey Island Naval Air Station says they didn't have any aircrafts operating Tuesday because of high winds." source: www.ctvvancouverisland.ca

First Murder on Vancouver Island of 2012 in Sooke
www.ctvvancouverisland.ca http VICTORIA - A 21-year old man is in jail, the suspect in Vancouver Island's first murder of 2012. Sooke RCMP received a call Sunday afternoon and rushed to a home in a trailer park in the 26-hundred block of Otter Point Road. RCMP say when officers arrived the found a 53-year old woman dead and arrested a 21-year old man. Investigators are releasing few details about the case, describing the accused as someone known to the victim. Neighbours describe the victim as warm hearted, religious and very friendly. The man accused of killing her 21-year-old Alex Conte. Neighbours are calling the case "a tragedy", and one they knew was coming for some time. "There were a couple of times that I had to come outside of my trailer to make sure that things were fine," neighbour Dale Birchard tells CTV News "He'd be ripping the garbage across the laneway and I asked him what was going on and made sure she was okay. And she assured me she was." Neighbours say police visited the home many times over the years -- the last occasion; Thanksgiving. "You could hear arguing," says Jeanine Kropmans "And maybe a glass smashing, pots and pans being thrown. The police come out and the next thing you know -- he's being taken down the road." RCMP are not saying what prompted the attack, but the victim shared with friends and neighbours one of her children suffered from mental illness. Alex Conte is charged with second degree murder. He is scheduled to make his first ...

Mysterious Rumblings in Sooke Bring Down a Barn
www.ctvvancouverisland.ca http SOOKE -- People in Sooke are talking after another round of mysterious rumblings. In January people reported feeling serious vibrations from Sooke to Victoria, some worried it was an earthquake. That thought crossed Sharon Hanslip's mind as well when she felt three blasts yesterday morning. The last one so severe it brought a barn on her property crashing to the ground. Seismologists say it wasn't an earthquake and Sooke's mayor, Wendal Milne said he doubts it can be attributed to the company responsible for January's blasting as it didn't feel the same... There is construction nearby at a new business park with heavy equipment and trucks on site. Milne says builders aren't required to report to the municipality when and if they need to blast so he can't say what it may have been. A Sooke mystery, he says. Sooke Woman Dead After Car Plunges Into Ocean
www.ctvvancouverisland.ca http SOOKE -- A diver surfaces and signals back to shore - he's found something. Not far away sits a grieving husband supported by two friends. His wife's body has just been located inside a submerged vehicle. She apparently drove off their driveway and into the water. "It appears to be a tragic accident...it will take some time to figure out what went on" says Staff Sgt. Steve Wright of Sooke RCMP. Police say the woman, who is believed to be 65-year old Louise Lemire-Elmore, attended a function in Victoria Tuesday night. Her husband was spending the night at the couple's 2nd home, and expected his wife to return to Sooke. He phoned her, but couldn't get a hold of her. A neighbour spotted the blue sedan in the water near the home about 11:30 Wednesday morning. Police don't think there is foul play involved in Elmore's death, and they haven't figured out why she would've veered off the roadway. "We don't believe there were any medical issues involved. She was in good health. We're still in the preliminary stages of the investigation" says Wright. Elmore's neighbours, watching the search and recovery that stretched into the afternoon, can't figure it out either. "I don't understand how she ended in the water" says one. He says Louise and her husband Bruce are good people who help take care of the area, and are often seen picking up litter near West Coast Road. It is believed the couple has adult children. "The husband was on scene to watch his wife ...

Teen Killed In Sooke Crash
www.ctvvancouverisland.ca http SOOKE -- The Easter long weekend has come to a tragic close on Vancouver Island after a high-speed crash near Sooke. Police say the driver of a stolen car filled with teenagers lost control on West Coast Road Monday morning, then the vehicle struck a pole and flipped. There were four people inside the small sedan - two 15 year olds and two 18 year olds. A young man died at the scene -- he was found in the back seat still strapped into his seatbelt. A woman was airlifted to Victoria General Hospital with head injuries but she is expected to live. Two men were taken to hospital by ambulance. Police have the two young men who were injured in custody at Victoria General Hospital, and they could face a charge of being in possession of a stolen vehicle. For the person who was actually behind the wheel this morning, a potential charge of dangerous driving causing death. Sooke RCMP say the car was reported stolen between 3:30 and 5:30 Monday morning before it ended up overturned in the ditch some six hours later. There were no other vehicles involved in the accident but witnesses say a couple returning home from a camping trip in an RV were almost hit. A section of West Coast Road was closed for hours while the coroner, RCMP crash analysts, and forensic investigators combed the scene and worked to identify the person who was killed. Seals and Sea Life around Sooke. Comedic Outtake.
My daughter loves to watch the seals, starfish, crab and a wide variety of other sea life off the docks around Sooke, BC. With a GoPro in hand we made a morning adventure out of it. Spend some good time observing the seals and then some green water creature managed to fight us twice. Wouldn't leave us alone until we put it back in its place!
