Victorian teaching profession in for shake-up, higher marks to be needed

Date

Teaching in Victoria is in for a dramatic shake-up, with only the top 30 per cent of year 12 students able to study teaching in future.

From 2018, the minimum ATAR for teaching will sit at 65 - rising to 70 a year later.

The current average for students entering teaching is just over 57.

Education minister James Merlino said it was about attracting the "best and brightest" teachers for Victorian students.

"I want that both as the minister for education, and as a parent," Mr Merlino told Ross and John.

He said tackling shortages in fields such as maths, science and languages was also on the agenda.
