New data shows injuries on Melbourne's trams are on the rise

Date

New data shows a rising number of injuries on Melbourne's trams.

Transport Safety Victoria data has revealed 44 serious injuries on trams between January and September this year, compared with 37 in the first nine months of 2015.

And the number of tram vehicle collisions increased from 587 in the first nine months of last year to 711 this year.

It's understood Melbourne is on track to recording the highest number of passenger falls, serious injuries and tram-vehicle collisions in at least five years.

The number of passenger slips, trips and falls increased the most - from 148 in the first nine months of 2015 - to 233 between January and September this year.

The rise in falls is being linked with an increase in tram patronage, but Phil Altieri from the union said there was another issue at play.

"There's a bigger story going on here," he told Ross and John.

"Tram drivers are being pressured, pretty heavily, by their managers to keep to unrealistic timetables."
