The Salvation Army has rubbished a left-field proposal from a Lord Mayor candidate about what to do with Melbourne's homeless people.
Gary Morgan is in the running to become mayor and has proposed paying homeless people $2 to report full rubbish bins and potholes on footpaths or streets.
He says revenue raised from parking fines would be used to fund the idea.
But Major Brendan Nottle told 3AW Breakfast it made no sense.
"I can't for the life of me understand how we're going to resolve it with cameras and getting homeless people to check out potholes and rubbish bins," he told Ross and John.
"I think homeless people, at the end of the day, need a home.
"I think these sorts of ideas just cloud an area that needs some really deep and strategic thinking."
