An idealistic woman learns about the power of listening from a friend.
Sisonke Msimang is a writer and activist whose work focuses on money, power, and sex. She has been published in The New York Times, The Guardian, Newsweek, and a range of other international publications. From 2008–12 she served as the executive director of the Open Society Initiative for Southern Africa. In 2012 Ms. Msimang was a Yale World Fellow, in 2014 she was named as an Aspen Institute New Voices Fellow, and in 2015 she was awarded a Ruth First Fellowship at the University of Wit-watersrand. She serves on the boards of directors of the International Women’s Health Coalition and Africa Check, in addition to serving on the board of trustees of the Graca Machel Trust. She is the Program Director at the Centre for Stories in Perth, Australia.
This story was recorded at a Moth Community Showcase on September 20th, 2016 at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Frederick P. Rose Hall in New York City. The theme of the night was Global Stories of Women and Girls. This event was made possible with the generous support of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

The new show, "BECOMING, The Story of Two Worlds", is a magical story, for the whole family, of worlds apart, who find untold trials and tribulations in coming together and creating a new paradigm of cooperation and sharing where anything is possible.
Held in our beautiful venue The Shed on Santa Road, Stellenbosch, only 30 minutes from Cape Town city. There will be playing before the show and food on sale. We hope to have the support of many communities. This is a fundraiser for our project so please encourage family and friends to come and support too!

Sisonke means “we are together” and exemplifies the vision of the Sisonke Social Circus program. Sisonke Social Circus brings together children ages 7 to 18 from diverse ethnic, socio-economic and cultural communities in the Stellenbosch Valley. Through circus skills such as acrobatics, dance, juggling, trapeze, drama and much more, the children learn life skills such as trust, accountability, self confidence, responsibility, communication skills, team work and leadership as well develop their physical health, strength, agility, dexterity and vitality.
Every child, no matter his or her background, comes to the Sisonke Social Circus program free of charge. Sisonke shows are opportunities to bring together a diverse and integrated audience to celebrate all that the Sisonke kids achieve together. This joyful experience truly embodies Sisonke’s theme.

From 2008–12 she served as the executive director of the Open Society Initiative for Southern Africa. In 2012 Ms. Msimang was a Yale World Fellow, in 2014 she was named as an Aspen Institute New Voices Fellow, and in 2015 she was awarded a Ruth First Fellowship at the University of Wit-watersrand. She serves on the boards of directors of the International Women’s Health Coalition and Africa Check, in addition to serving on the board of trustees of the Graca Machel Trust. Sisonke Social Circus brings together children ages 7 to 18 from diverse ethnic, socio-economic and cultural communities in the Stellenbosch Valley. Through circus skills such as acrobatics, dance, juggling, trapeze, drama and much more, the children learn life skills such as trust, accountability, self confidence, responsibility, communication skills, team work and leadership as well develop their physical health, strength, agility, dexterity and vitality.
Every child, no matter his or her background, comes to the Sisonke Social Circus program free of charge. Sisonke shows are opportunities to bring together a diverse and integrated audience to celebrate all that the Sisonke kids achieve together. This joyful experience truly embodies Sisonke’s theme.
