National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health
The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is the U.S. federal agency responsible for conducting research and making recommendations for the prevention of work-related injury and illness. NIOSH is part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
NIOSH is headquartered in Washington, D.C., with research laboratories and offices in Cincinnati, Ohio; Morgantown, West Virginia; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Denver, Colorado; Anchorage, Alaska; Spokane, Washington; and Atlanta, Georgia. NIOSH is a professionally diverse organization with a staff of 1,200 people representing a wide range of disciplines including epidemiology, medicine, industrial hygiene, safety, psychology, engineering, chemistry, and statistics.
The director of NIOSH is John Howard.
The Occupational Safety and Health Act, signed by President Richard M. Nixon, on December 29, 1970, created both NIOSH and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). NIOSH was established to help ensure safe and healthful working conditions by providing research, information, education, and training in the field of occupational safety and health. NIOSH provides national and world leadership to prevent work-related illness, injury, disability, and death by gathering information, conducting scientific research, and translating the knowledge gained into products and services.

Understanding Hazards, Risks, and Controls for Safer Fluid Transfers in Oil and Gas Extraction
This video highlights safe work practices for fluid transfers from tanks to tanker trucks. From 2016-2020, at least 12 oil and gas worker fatalities occurred during transfer of process fluids due to known hazards and risks including: inhalation of hazardous gases and vapors, oxygen deficiencies, fires and explosions, and heat stroke. This video explains that all process fluids (wastewater, flowback fluids, condensate, and crude oil) should be considered potentially hazardous. This video highlights safe work practices for fluid transfers from tanks to tanker trucks. From 2016-2020, at least 12 oil and gas worker fatalities occurred during transfer of process fluids due to known hazards and risks including: inhalation of hazardous gases and vapors, oxygen deficiencies, fires and explosions, and heat stroke. This video explains that all process fluids (wastewater, flowback fluids, condensate, and crude oil) should be considered potentially hazardous. Recommendations for employers and workers are consistent with the hierarchy of controls, with a focus on engineering controls, administrative controls, and the proper and consistent use of personal protective equipment (PPE). Engineering controls include best practices from the American Petroleum Institute (API) such as proper venting, bonding, grounding, and the use of conductive hose. Administrative controls include the development and use of job safety and health analyses and worker training. PPE includes multi-gas monitors, impermeable gloves, flame-resistant clothing, and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).

National Institute for Occupational Safety
National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health: Known for short as NIOSH, a US Federal agency responsible for conducting research and making recommendations for the prevention of work-related disease and injury. Despite its name (which would suggest that it is part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Institute is part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (the CDC). NIOSH is responsible for conducting research on the full scope of occupational disease and injury ranging from lung disease in miners to carpal tunnel syndrome in computer users. In addition to conducting research, NIOSH NIOSH is a diverse organization. Its employees represent a wide range of disciplines including industrial hygiene, nursing, epidemiology, engineering, medicine, and statistics. Headquartered in Washington DC, NIOSH has offices in Atlanta, Georgia and research divisions in Cincinnati, Ohio; Morgantown, West Virginia; Bruceton, Pennsylvania; and Spokane, Washington. Each day, an average of 9,000 U.S. workers sustain disabling injuries on the job, 17 workers die from an injury sustained at work, and 137 workers die from work-related diseases. The economic burden of this continuing toll is high. Data from a NIOSH-funded study reveal $171 billion annually in direct and indirect costs of occupational injuries and illnesses ($145 billion for injuries and $26 billion for diseases). (These costs compare to $33 billion for AIDS, $67.3 billion for Alzheimer disease, $164.3 billion for circulatory diseases, and $170.7 billion for cancer.)

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is the U.S. federal agency responsible for conducting research and making recommendations for the prevention of work-related injury and illness. NIOSH is part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
NIOSH is headquartered in Washington, D.C., with research laboratories and offices in Cincinnati, Ohio; Morgantown, West Virginia; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Denver, Colorado; Anchorage, Alaska; Spokane, Washington; and Atlanta, Georgia. NIOSH is a professionally diverse organization with a staff of 1,200 people representing a wide range of disciplines including epidemiology, medicine, industrial hygiene, safety, psychology, engineering, chemistry, and statistics.
The director of NIOSH is John Howard.
The Occupational Safety and Health Act, signed by President Richard M. Nixon, on December 29, 1970, created both NIOSH and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). NIOSH was established to help ensure safe and healthful working conditions by providing research, information, education, and training in the field of occupational safety and health. NIOSH provides national and world leadership to prevent work-related illness, injury, disability, and death by gathering information, conducting scientific research, and translating the knowledge gained into products and services.
