The Olympic mascots represent the cultural heritage of the place where the Olympic Games are taking place. The first summer Olympic mascot was in 1972 Munich Olympics and its name was Waldi. It was the character of Dachshund dog. In the 1976 Montréal Olympics, the mascot was Amik. In the 1980 Summer Olympics games in Moscow, it was Misha, whereas in the Los Angeles Olympics games mascot was Sam, a character of the bald eagle. In 1988 Seoul Olympics Hodori was the mascot of character Tiger cub. In the 1992 Barcelona Olympics it was Cobi and in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, Izzy was the mascot. In 2004 Athens and 2008 Beijing Olympics it was Athena and Phevos & Fuwa respectively. In the 2012 Summer Olympics in London it was Wenlock, the character of Drops of steel with cameras for eyes. In the Rio Olympics 2016 mascot is Vinicius & Tom, an animal representing all Brazilian mammals.

The Olympic mascots are fictional characters, usually an animal native to the area or human figures, who represent the cultural heritage of the place where the Olympic and Paralympic Games are taking place.
The mascots are often used to help market the Olympic Games to a younger audience, in particular toddlers and children. Since the 1968 Winter Olympics in Grenoble, France the Olympic Games have had a mascot.
The first major mascot in the Summer Olympic Games was Misha in the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow. Starting with the 2010 Vancouver mascots, the Olympic and Paralympic mascots have been presented together.

The first Olympic mascot was born at the Grenoble Olympic Games in 1968. It was named “Schuss” and it was a little man on skis, designed in an abstract form and painted in the colors of France: blue, red and white.[1] However, the first official Olympic mascot appeared in the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich. It was Waldi, a Dachshund dog, a popular breed in Bavaria and it represented the attributes required for athletes – resistance, tenacity and agility. On it we can see three of the colors of the Olympic flag (blue, yellow, green).
The success of those first mascots helped the idea of a mascot become a symbol of the Olympic Games and developed into an institution. Mascots are very popular and despite the importance of the message they convey, they are designed in simple manner with bright, happy colors appropriate for the ‘festive’ atmosphere of the Olympic Games.
The mascots for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, were Phevos and Athena, two dolls inspired by a bell-shaped archaic sculpture that is on display at the National Archaeological Museum of Athens. In ancient times, these dolls, the ‘daidala’, as they were called, were also items of worship as well as toys. Phevos and Athena are brother and sister and so they symbolize the joy of play and the values of Olympism. The choice of a brother and sister was purposely made to promote the values of equality and brotherhood.

The official mascot of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games has been unveiled at BBC Scotland's headquarters in Glasgow.
Clyde was designed by Beth Gilmour, from Cumbernauld, who won a UK-wide competition.
The launch event, which was hosted by children's TV presenters Sam and Mark, featured Olympic medallists Michael Jamieson and Rebecca Adlington, who told the crowd of the importance of the forthcoming Games.

Sam (mascot)
Sam the Olympic Eagle was the mascot of the 1984 Summer Olympics which were held in Los Angeles. He is a bald eagle, which is the national bird of the United States, where the games were held. Intended as a patriotic symbol, being named Sam also suggests a kinship with Uncle Sam, another American symbol. He was designed by Disney Legend Bob Moore, an artist for Disney.
He is often confused by guests of Disneyland, and also by those reading documentation about mascot designs for the Olympics, for another Disney mascot named Eagle Sam, host of the former Disneyland attraction America Sings, and designed by animator Marc Davis c. 1973. He shares the name of Sam the Eagle from The Muppet Show, but the design is vastly different. He is still known as Eagle Sam in Japan, where an animated series of the same name ran during 1983, the year preceding the Summer Olympics. Even after the conclusion of the Games, Sam the Eagle is still used to promote a track and field event, the Mt. SAC Relays at Mt. San Antonio College, specifically its "LA84 Youth Days" promotion for youth interested in athletics, run by a charitable group founded during the Olympics.

The official mascot of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games has been unveiled at BBC Scotland's headquarters in Glasgow. Clyde was designed by Beth Gilmour, from Cumbernauld, who won a UK-wide competition. The launch event, which was hosted by children's TV presenters Sam and Mark, featured Olympic medallists Michael Jamieson and Rebecca Adlington, who told the crowd of the importance of the forthcoming Games. Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games Mascot Clyde Unveiled
The official mascot of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games has been unveiled at BBC Scotland's headquarters in Glasgow. Clyde was designed by Beth Gilmour, from Cumbernauld, who won a UK-wide competition. The Olympic mascots are fictional characters, usually an animal native to the area or human figures, who represent the cultural heritage of the place where the Olympic and Paralympic Games are taking place.
The mascots are often used to help market the Olympic Games to a younger audience, in particular toddlers and children. Since the 1968 Winter Olympics in Grenoble, France the Olympic Games have had a mascot.
The first major mascot in the Summer Olympic Games was Misha in the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow. Starting with the 2010 Vancouver mascots, the Olympic and Paralympic mascots have been presented together.

The first Olympic mascot was born at the Grenoble Olympic Games in 1968. It was Waldi, a Dachshund dog, a popular breed in Bavaria and it represented the attributes required for athletes – resistance, tenacity and agility. On it we can see three of the colors of the Olympic flag (blue, yellow, green).
The success of those first mascots helped the idea of a mascot become a symbol of the Olympic Games and developed into an institution. Mascots are very popular and despite the importance of the message they convey, they are designed in simple manner with bright, happy colors appropriate for the ‘festive’ atmosphere of the Olympic Games.
The mascots for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, were Phevos and Athena, two dolls inspired by a bell-shaped archaic sculpture that is on display at the National Archaeological Museum of Athens. In ancient times, these dolls, the ‘daidala’, as they were called, were also items of worship as well as toys. Phevos and Athena are brother and sister and so they symbolize the joy of play and the values of Olympism. The choice of a brother and sister was purposely made to promote the values of equality and brotherhood.
