We start this morning with President Park Geun-hye's latest international trip...
The South Korean leader is in Mongolia for the Asia Europe Meeting Summit and for talks with her Mongolian counterpart.
Officials say the events will give President Park the platform to tackle some economic and security challenges,... and garner support for her administration's North Korea policies.
Song Ji-sun starts us off.
"Amid the rising concerns about growing trade protectionism and neo-isolationism following the Brexit situation, the ASEM summit will be our first diplomatic platform for leading the way to normalizing open-door policies and free trade."
President Park will take the stage at the Asia-Europe Meeting... hoping to use it as an opportunity to promote Korea as a leading open trade nation.
The summit, celebrating twenty years of solidarity between Asia and Europe this year,... is the first multilateral event to be held since Britain's decision to leave the European Union.
More than 50 leaders will discuss ways to enhance their intercontinental partnership... on issues ranging from climate change to terror threats... and North Korea will be a part of that agenda as one of the threats to security and the economy in the region.
"President Park will point to North Korea as the biggest threat to realization of the potential for cooperation for the peace and prosperity of Asia and Europe. She will suggest that the ultimate solution to North Korea's nuclear and human rights issues is unification on the Korean peninsula and she will call for ASEM member nations' cooperation in pressing the regime."
President Park will also hold bilateral talks with the leaders of the European Union, Laos and Vietnam between the sessions on Friday.
"Through her speech at the summit, President Park will help guide the discussion... by laying out her vision for the ASEM nations as they work to overcome a new set of challenges.

Delving deeper into the current fields of collaboration and beyond... our Connie Kim highlights the two countries' 26 years of bilateral cooperation.
Mongolia has undergone rapid economic and political growth since the country's democratic revolution in 1990,… and Korea has been a model nation for Mongolia.
Fast forward 26 years since forging diplomatic ties, Korea's presence here is nearly everywhere to be seen.
Over the decades' long relationship; it's not an exaggeration to say K-pop is what bridged the two nations.
These K-pop fans spare no time to memorize the Korean lyrics and dance routines of their favorite K-pop tunes, which are now, for them, part of their life.
And these young Mongolians' passion for Korean culture is what has facilitated exchanges on a people-to-people level,...
which ultimately has led to working at a higher level to address an issue every Mongolian is deeply concerned about -- 'desertification'.
These dunes cover about 40-percent of Mongolia's territory and even worse, the sand flies across northeastern China,… reaching the Korean peninsula.
Korea has joined the fight against desertification with Mongolia,… for one,… getting involved in a ten-year green belt project in the Gobi desert.
And second,… actively rehabilitating mines that act as THE biggest cause of desertification.
These are just a few cases that have cemented bilateral relations,... leaving the door open for more potential growth culturally, socially, and economically.

Of 3 million Mongolians, half live in the capital; there has been a rural exodus since a new consumerist way of life has emerged. While many have prospered as Mongolia grows rich, from globalisation, and inward investment; wealth inequality is extreme "with one third under the poverty level". A tale of two Mongolia's is emerging. As economist Danbadarjaa claims: "prosperity is not felt by every family". As Mongolia races forwards, for the "nomads crammed into the yurt slums that surround Ulan-Bator, poverty and alcoholism are rife" Tuul Saruula, claims. A fashion designer she signifies the new rich Mongolia. But as Mongolia develops, huge challenges remain.

i/mɒŋˈɡoʊliə/ (Mongolian: ᠮᠤᠩᠭᠤᠯ
ᠤᠯᠤᠰ [Monggol Ulus] in Mongolian script; Монгол Улс [Mongol Uls] in Mongolian Cyrillic) is a sovereign state in east-central Asia. It is bordered by Russia to the north and China to the south, east and west. While they do not share a border, Mongolia is separated from Kazakhstan by only 36.76 kilometres (22.84 mi). Ulaanbaatar, the capital and largest city, is home to about 45% of the population.
The area of what is now Mongolia has been ruled by various nomadic empires, including the Xiongnu, the Xianbei, the Rouran, the Turkic Khaganate, and others. In 1206, Genghis Khan founded the Mongol Empire, and his grandson Kublai Khan conquered China to establish the Yuan dynasty. After the collapse of the Yuan, the Mongols retreated to Mongolia and resumed their earlier pattern of factional conflict, except during the era of Dayan Khan and Tumen Zasagt Khan. In the 16th century, Tibetan Buddhism began to spread in Mongolia, being further led by the Manchu-founded Qing dynasty, which absorbed the country in the 17th century. By the early 1900s, almost one-third of the adult male population were Buddhist monks.

We start this morning with President Park Geun-hye's latest international trip...
The South Korean leader is in Mongolia for the Asia Europe Meeting Summit and for talks with her Mongolian counterpart.
Officials say the events will give President Park the platform to tackle some economic and security challenges,... and garner support for her administration's North Korea policies.
Song Ji-sun starts us off.
"Amid the rising concerns about growing trade protectionism and neo-isolationism following the Brexit situation, the ASEM summit will be our first diplomatic platform for leading the way to normalizing open-door policies and free trade."
President Park will take the stage at the Asia-Europe Meeting... hoping to use it as an opportunity to promote Korea as a leading open trade nation.
The summit, celebrating twenty years of solidarity between Asia and Europe this year,... is the first multilateral event to be held since Britain's decision to leave the European Union.
More than 50 leaders will discuss ways to enhance their intercontinental partnership... on issues ranging from climate change to terror threats... and North Korea will be a part of that agenda as one of the threats to security and the economy in the region.
"President Park will point to North Korea as the biggest threat to realization of the potential for cooperation for the peace and prosperity of Asia and Europe. She will suggest that the ultimate solution to North Korea's nuclear and human rights issues is unification on the Korean peninsula and she will call for ASEM member nations' cooperation in pressing the regime."
President Park will also hold bilateral talks with the leaders of the European Union, Laos and Vietnam between the sessions on Friday.
"Through her speech at the summit, President Park will help guide the discussion... by laying out her vision for the ASEM nations as they work to overcome a new set of challenges.

Mongolia has undergone rapid economic and political growth since the country's democratic revolution in 1990,… and Korea has been a model nation for Mongolia.
Fast forward 26 years since forging diplomatic ties, Korea's presence here is nearly everywhere to be seen.
Over the decades' long relationship; it's not an exaggeration to say K-pop is what bridged the two nations.
These K-pop fans spare no time to memorize the Korean lyrics and dance routines of their favorite K-pop tunes, which are now, for them, part of their life.
And these young Mongolians' passion for Korean culture is what has facilitated exchanges on a people-to-people level,...
which ultimately has led to working at a higher level to address an issue every Mongolian is deeply concerned about -- 'desertification'.
These dunes cover about 40-percent of Mongolia's territory and even worse, the sand flies across northeastern China,… reaching the Korean peninsula.
Korea has joined the fight against desertification with Mongolia,… for one,… getting involved in a ten-year green belt project in the Gobi desert.
And second,… actively rehabilitating mines that act as THE biggest cause of desertification.
These are just a few cases that have cemented bilateral relations,... leaving the door open for more potential growth culturally, socially, and economically.

"There used to only be bread and salt on our stalls. The transition has been very quick", explains Dagvadorj, one of Mongolia's richest businessmen. Of 3 million Mongolians, half live in the capital; there has been a rural exodus since a new consumerist way of life has emerged. While many have prospered as Mongolia grows rich, from globalisation, and inward investment; wealth inequality is extreme "with one third under the poverty level". A tale of two Mongolia's is emerging. As economist Danbadarjaa claims: "prosperity is not felt by every family". As Mongolia races forwards, for the "nomads crammed into the yurt slums that surround Ulan-Bator, poverty and alcoholism are rife" Tuul Saruula, claims. A fashion designer she signifies the new rich Mongolia. But as Mongolia develops, huge challenges remain.

Of 3 million Mongolians, half live in the capital; there has been a rural exodus since a new consumerist way of life has emerged. While many have prospered as Mongolia grows rich, from globalisation, and inward investment; wealth inequality is extreme "with one third under the poverty level". A tale of two Mongolia's is emerging. As economist Danbadarjaa claims: "prosperity is not felt by every family". As Mongolia races forwards, for the "nomads crammed into the yurt slums that surround Ulan-Bator, poverty and alcoholism are rife" Tuul Saruula, claims. A fashion designer she signifies the new rich Mongolia. But as Mongolia develops, huge challenges remain.

He says: "Most of our growth is actually coming from mining and we would like to make our economy like a rainbow-coloured economy, you know, now Mongolia's economy is mostly one colour and we would like to have more colours. Of course I have a message to foreign investors: Do not see Mongolia as a single mining business country, there are many opportunities... Mongolia can be a great hub between Russia and China in this region - an infrastructural hub, financial hub, high-tech hub, we have the potential."

Mongolia has the world's second largest copper reserves and the fourth biggest coal deposits.
So it should come as little surprise that the mining sector is the main driver of the Mongolian economy -- accounting for almost a quarter of the country's GDP.
During its transition from a socialist country to a market-driven economy -- such resources were a stepping stone to achieve economic growth.
Until recently, Mongolia has experienced double-digit growth.
It has now somewhat slowed,... due mainly to a decline in raw material prices,... as well as slowing foreign investment.
Korea and Mongolia established diplomatic relations in 1990,... and have maintained friendly ties in various areas.
Bilateral trade stood at a mere two-point-seven million U.S. dollars in 1990,... but surged more than 100-fold to 292 million dollars in 2015.
Investment amounted to 240-thousand dollars in 1994,... and jumped to 38-point-eight million last year.
While growing,... the figures pale in comparison to those of neighboring countries,... like China, Russia and Japan -- all of which have established strategic partnerships with Ulaanbaatar,... a notch higher than the "comprehensive partnership" Korea has with Mongolia.
"Since establishing a comprehensive partnership during the previous administration,... we hope President Park's visit will help us develop ties beyond that."
Currently, over 500 Korean corporations operate in Mongolia,... and conglomerates like Hyosung Group and POSCO Energy have been involved in infrastructure projects.
More opportunities could be in the works as Mongolia is pursuing a national project dubbed "Transit Mongolia" -- to overcome its landlocked geographic location with a trade, transport and logistics network.
It's also pushing for large-scale infrastructure projects in railway, roads and terminals over the next five years.
"Following summit talks, it's expected that investment will expand in the areas discussed. Whether that be mining or construction. This will also create more jobs. Korea should also be open to other sectors, like ICT."
However, Korea still has to overcome problems, such as a lack of information and expensive transportation costs.
One solution is this is by boosting economic deals.
"Mongolia is also seeking to develop a system for stable and efficient trade and investment. Also, Korea may feel more pressure to establish an Economic Partnership Agreement with Mongolia,... as neighboring countries are stepping up interest,... and its major rival Japan recently did so."
They add that support is needed from the government level -- by holding regular high level and summit talks to seek opportunities for Korean companies,... through partnerships with local firms.

Prior to his present assignment, Mr Hofman was the World Bank's Chief Economist for the East Asia and Pacific Region and Director, Singapore Office. As regional chief economist he led a team to analyse key trends and policy issues across East Asia and the Pacific and as Director Singapore he helped build a partnership that focuses on expanding investment in infrastructure in emerging economies.
Before moving to Singapore in 2011, Mr Hofman was the Country Director for the Philippines, responsible for a growing portfolio of projects and advisory services to the Philippines government.
Mr Hofman has accumulated more than 22 years of experience in the World Bank, 16 of which in the East Asia region. Among others, Mr Hofman was Lead Economist for China and for Indonesia and country economist for Mongolia and Namibia. He had also worked on Brazil, South Africa, Mongolia, Zambia, and Namibia in his earlier years with the Bank.

China, Russia and Mongolia inked a development plan on Thursday to build an economic corridor linking the three neighbors, pledging to boost transportation connectivity and economic cooperation in border regions.
The plan was signed after a meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Mongolian President Tsakhiagiin Elbegdorj in the Uzbek capital of Tashkent, ahead of an annual summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).
While chairing the trilateral meeting, the third of its kind, the Chinese president reviewed the achievements the three countries have made in implementing their mid-term roadmap for cooperation, saying progress and positive results have been made in such areas as trade and economy, cultural and people-to-people exchanges, transit transport, tourism and sports.
The Chinese side is satisfied with the momentum of our trilateral cooperation, said Xi.
He proposed that the three countries continue to center on the aligning of China's Silk Road Economic Belt initiative, Russia's development strategies, especially its transcontinental rail plan, and Mongolia's Steppe Road program to actively advance the trilateral cooperation.
Xi called on the three countries to well implement the development plan to build the economic corridor and strengthen cooperation in transportation infrastructure connectivity, port construction, industrial capacity, investment, trade and economy, cultural and people-to-people exchanges, and environmental protection, thus producing outcomes at an early date.
The three sides should actively engage in the discussion of building cross-border economic cooperation zones, enhance industrial tie-in, boost sub-regional cooperation in our adjacent areas, and promote the common development of our adjacent areas, Xi said.
The Chinese president also urged the three countries to expand cooperation within the framework of the SCO, especially in such areas as transit transportation, food security, disaster reduction and energy.
Putin said Russia, China and Mongolia are friendly neighbors based on equality, respect and mutual benefit.
He said Russia, in light of the three countries' consensus, is committed to working with China and Mongolia to well implement the projects of transportation and infrastructure construction, speed up simplifying port procedures, and promote regional economic integration process.
Russia is also willing to increase cultural and people-to-people exchanges with the other two countries, he added.
For his part, Elbegdorj said the development plan on the economic corridor linking the three countries is very important, adding that Mongolia stands ready to join hands with China and Russia to advance the construction of transportation infrastructure and strengthen economic cooperation in border regions.
Mongolia also hopes to enhance cooperation with the other two countries in agriculture and disaster relief, he said.
After the meeting, the three heads of state also witnessed the signing of a trilateral agreement on the mutual recognition of the customs supervision results on certain commodities.

While chairing the trilateral meeting, the third of its kind, the Chinese president reviewed the achievements the three countries have made in implementing their mid-term roadmap for cooperation, saying progress and positive results have been made in such areas as trade and economy, cultural and people-to-people exchanges, transit transport, tourism and sports.
The Chinese side is satisfied with the momentum of our trilateral cooperation, said Xi.
He proposed that the three countries continue to center on the aligning of China's Silk Road Economic Belt initiative, Russia's development strategies, especially its transcontinental rail plan, and Mongolia's Steppe Road program to actively advance the trilateral cooperation.
Xi called on the three countries to well implement the development plan to build the economic corridor and strengthen cooperation in transportation infrastructure connectivity, port construction, industrial capacity, investment, trade and economy, cultural and people-to-people exchanges, and environmental protection, thus producing outcomes at an early date.
The three sides should actively engage in the discussion of building cross-border economic cooperation zones, enhance industrial tie-in, boost sub-regional cooperation in our adjacent areas, and promote the common development of our adjacent areas, Xi said.
The Chinese president also urged the three countries to expand cooperation within the framework of the SCO, especially in such areas as transit transportation, food security, disaster reduction and energy.
Putin said Russia, China and Mongolia are friendly neighbors based on equality, respect and mutual benefit.
He said Russia, in light of the three countries' consensus, is committed to working with China and Mongolia to well implement the projects of transportation and infrastructure construction, speed up simplifying port procedures, and promote regional economic integration process.
Russia is also willing to increase cultural and people-to-people exchanges with the other two countries, he added.
For his part, Elbegdorj said the development plan on the economic corridor linking the three countries is very important, adding that Mongolia stands ready to join hands with China and Russia to advance the construction of transportation infrastructure and strengthen economic cooperation in border regions.
Mongolia also hopes to enhance cooperation with the other two countries in agriculture and disaster relief, he said.
After the meeting, the three heads of state also witnessed the signing of a trilateral agreement on the mutual recognition of the customs supervision results on certain commodities.

Greg Gray, Duke University professor of global health, infectious diseases and environmental sciences, has set up a remote research outpost in Mongolia that could detect the next global infectious disease pandemic.
Gray and his Mongolian colleagues are collaborating in a NIH (Fogarty International Center)-funded project that brings rapid influenza diagnostic equipment to rural areas where previously health professionals had to send samples to the national capitol and wait up to two weeks for results.
“This project will certainly help preserve the health of Mongolian people and their animals, and could potentially save lives,” said Gray. “In addition, we are bringing a new level of rigor to medical research in Mongolia, which is important to building capacity in the country’s health sector.”

Her further research interests are social health, healthy behavior, public influence, human rights and ethics.

Specially, the same Cyrillic letter "х" is transliterated "h" or "kh", the letter "ө" is transliterated "ô", "ö", "o" or "u", but Latin "o" is also the transliteration of the Cyrillic "о", and Latin "u" is also the transliteration of Cyrillic "у" and "ү" (the latter should be transliterated "ù" according to ISO 9, but this is rarely done). So, if you can't find a name as you wrote it, try other spellings.

Hôvsgôl (or "Hövsgöl") lake, in Hövsgöl province, is very beautiful. High water can make the roads difficult.), Reindeer herders living in High Alpine mountains. Must ride horses or reindeer from Tsagaanuup. It can be a long hard ride.
Local Bonda Lake Camp in Khatgal village near Lake Khovsgol offers various nature and cultural featuring: fishing, hiking, winter tours, nomad visits, horse back riding, visiting reindeer herders and Darhad valley. Horse riding, you have chance discover Lake Khovsgol and its beautiful waters, meet Tsataan (nomadic reindeer herders) living in yurts in the north of Khovsgol area. This region is incredibly scenic, perched at 1645 m altitude in green mountains, covered with thick pine forests and lush meadows with grazing yaks and horses, and rich with wildlife: the lake has 9 species of fish and its surroundings are full of sheep, goats, elk and more than 430 species of birds. There are 5 different Mongolian tribes nearby: Khalh, Darhad, Buriad, Hotgoid, & Urianhai. The Camp has a hot shower, sauna, internet and a restaurant with Mongolian and European meals.

Mongolian cashmere is known as the best in the world. Garments and blankets made of cashmere. You can find lots of stores that sells cashmere products.
Mongolia is famous for its copper mines Erdenet and Oyu Tolgoi. Copper bookmark is one of the ideal souvenirs and you can easily find this USD1 metal souvenir in Ulaanbaatar souvenir shops.
Paintings by local artists are excellent buys in Mongolia(local painting center gps coordinate: 47.928958, 106.928024 , "N+106°55'40.9"E/@47.9289438,106.9280278,15).
You can find felt poker-work in Erdenet.
Note that it is illegal to take antiques out of the country without a special permit.
The huge open-air market, Narantuul ("The Black Market") in Ulaanbaatar offers the lowest prices on just about anything you could want. Be very careful of the many pickpockets and even attackers there. This can be a great place to get a good pair of riding boots. You can opt for a variety of Mongolian styles, from fancy to the more practical, or even get a good set of Russian style boots.

Almost fifty kilometres east of Ulaanbaatar is a leisure area for the inhabitants of the city, the Terej National Park. Here horse riding is available across country and without limit, a fact that pleases the basic instincts of the Mongolian heart. In Kharkhorin, former residence of those who once ruled Mongolia, today there is little left to see. However, a few mysterious sites remain which, along with the Erdene Zuu Monastery, are highly evocative of this ancient city in Central Mongolia as for thirty two years it was the centre of one of the most powerful empires on Earth. Mongolia is a landlocked country located between China and Russia. It is a vast emptiness that links land and sky, and is one of the last few places on the planet where nomadic life is still a living tradition. Mongolia may have various geopolitical, cultural and geographical meanings. Mongolia consists of historic Outer Mongolia. The province of Inner Mongolia is geographically and politically separate and located in northern part of China yet it shares common borders with Mongolia.
With only 1.7 people per km², Mongolia has the lowest population density among all independent countries in the world, and it is this vast and majestic emptiness that is the country's enduring appeal, bringing the traveller, as it does, into a close communion with nature and its nomadic inhabitants.
Mongolia is entirely landlocked, between China and Russia.
For several letters, the ISO 9 standard transliteration of Cyrillic is not widely used and there is no consensus either in Mongolia nor in Wikitravel. Specially, the same Cyrillic letter "х" is transliterated "h" or "kh", the letter "ө" is transliterated "ô", "ö", "o" or "u", but Latin "o" is also the transliteration of the Cyrillic "о", and Latin "u" is also the transliteration of Cyrillic "у" and "ү" (the latter should be transliterated "ù" according to ISO 9, but this is rarely done). So, if you can't find a name as you wrote it, try other spellings.

Mongolia is a big country with bad transportation means, so trying to see too many provinces you would spend your holidays inside vehicles. Hôvsgôl (or "Hövsgöl") lake, in Hövsgöl province, is very beautiful. There is not much architecture in Mongolia, but Amarbaysgalant monastery, Selenge province, in the middle of nowhere, is worth seeing. Interested by the economical aspect? High water can make the roads difficult.), Reindeer herders living in High Alpine mountains. Must ride horses or reindeer from Tsagaanuup. It can be a long hard ride.
Local Bonda Lake Camp in Khatgal village near Lake Khovsgol offers various nature and cultural featuring: fishing, hiking, winter tours, nomad visits, horse back riding, visiting reindeer herders and Darhad valley. Horse riding, you have chance discover Lake Khovsgol and its beautiful waters, meet Tsataan (nomadic reindeer herders) living in yurts in the north of Khovsgol area. This region is incredibly scenic, perched at 1645 m altitude in green mountains, covered with thick pine forests and lush meadows with grazing yaks and horses, and rich with wildlife: the lake has 9 species of fish and its surroundings are full of sheep, goats, elk and more than 430 species of birds. There are 5 different Mongolian tribes nearby: Khalh, Darhad, Buriad, Hotgoid, & Urianhai. The Camp has a hot shower, sauna, internet and a restaurant with Mongolian and European meals.

Mongolian cashmere is known as the best in the world. Garments and blankets made of cashmere. You can find lots of stores that sells cashmere products.
Mongolia is famous for its copper mines Erdenet and Oyu Tolgoi. Copper bookmark is one of the ideal souvenirs and you can easily find this USD1 metal souvenir in Ulaanbaatar souvenir shops.
Paintings by local artists are excellent buys in Mongolia(local painting center gps coordinate: 47.928958, 106.928024 , "N+106°55'40.9"E/@47.9289438,106.9280278,15).
You can find felt poker-work in Erdenet.
Note that it is illegal to take antiques out of the country without a special permit.
The huge open-air market, Narantuul ("The Black Market") in Ulaanbaatar offers the lowest prices on just about anything you could want. Be very careful of the many pickpockets and even attackers there. This can be a great place to get a good pair of riding boots. You can opt for a variety of Mongolian styles, from fancy to the more practical, or even get a good set of Russian style boots.
In Erdenet is a ISO 9 001 certified carpet factory, making and selling also slippers made in carpet.
