New Jalpaiguri is a railway station in Jalpaiguri district in the Indian state of West Bengal which serves the twin cities of Jalpaiguri and Siliguri.
The partition of India in 1947 completely disrupted communication links in North Bengal and Assam with the southern parts of West Bengal. Earlier, the links were through the eastern part of Bengal, which became a part of Pakistan in 1947. Siliguri gained in importance as the gateway to North Bengal, Sikkim, Bhutan and Assam.
Around 1949, Siliguri Junction station, a new station north of the old Siliguri Town railway station, came up with several metre gauge lines converging on it. In addition there was the narrow gauge Darjeeling Himalayan Railway running from Siliguri Town station to Darjeeling via Siliguri Junction. The Assam Rail Link Project, completed in 1950, linked the railways in Assam, with a metre gauge line to Kishanganj. The line running across North Bengal, spanned the Teesta, Torsha, and Sankosh rivers.
Jalpaiguri (Pron: ˌʤælpaɪˈgʊəri) (Bengali: জলপাইগুড়ি Jôlpaiguṛi) is a city in the Indian state of West Bengal. It is the largest city and the headquarters of the Jalpaiguri district, and the divisional headquarters of the region. The city is located on the banks of the Teesta River which is the second largest river in West Bengal on the foothills of the Himalayas. As of the 2011 cansus, the city had a population of 107,351. and the metropolitan area 169,002 The city has become an important trade center of West Bengal. It is a principal commercial, tourism, transportation, and educational center of the North Bengal region. It lies 42 kilometers away from Siliguri which is its twin city.
The name "Jalpaiguri" comes from the Bhutanese term je-le-pe-go-ri, meaning a place where warm clothes are traded, suggesting a trading centre. Another suggestion is that it is from the word "Jalpai" meaning olive, and "Guri" meaning a place. The city of Jalpaiguri once had many olive trees.
Shatabdi Express trains are a series of fast (called superfast in India) passenger trains operated by Indian Railways to connect Metro cities with other cities important for tourism, pilgrimage or business. Shatabdi Express are day-trains and they return to the station of origin the same day.
The Shatabdis are among the fastest trains in India and the Indian Railways consider them as prestigious. The Shatabdi Express trains run over short to medium distances while the Rajdhani Expresses and the Duronto Expresses are long-distance trains. Rajdhani Expresses connect the nation's capital New Delhi to capitals of states and other major cities while Duronto Expresses connect connect major cities to other major cities. All three series of trains have a maximum speed of about 130 km/h (81 mph). The 12001 Bhopal Shatabdi express, however, runs at a peak speed of 150 km/h (93 mph), which makes it the fastest train in India.
The word "Shatabdi" means centenary in Sanskrit, Hindi and several Indian languages. The first Shatabdi train was started in 1988 to commemorate the centenary of Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru's Birthday (the First Prime Minister of India) by Madhav Rao Scindia, minister for railways. It operated from New Delhi Railway Station to Jhansi Junction, later extended to Bhopal. It is now known as the Bhopal Shatabdi Express.
The Darjeeling Mail is one of the legendary trains in the eastern region of India that has been running from pre-independence days and is still in operation. It connects to the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway at New Jalpaiguri in Siliguri. This is a major train for Kolkata-Siliguri route and Haldibari slip route.
During the British period all connections to North Bengal were through East Bengal.
From 1878, the railway route from Kolkata, then called Calcutta, to Siliguri was in two laps. The first lap was a 185 km journey along the Eastern Bengal State Railway from Calcutta Station (later renamed Sealdah) to Damookdeah Ghat on the southern bank of the Padma River, then across the river in a ferry and the second lap of the journey was a 336 km metre gauge line of the North Bengal Railway that linked Saraghat on the northern bank of the Padma to Siliguri.
The 1.8 km long Hardinge Bridge across the Padma came up in 1912. In 1926 the metre-gauge section north of the bridge was converted to broad gauge, and so the entire Calcutta - Siliguri route became broad-gauge. The route thus ran: Sealdah-Ranaghat-Bheramara-Hardinge Bridge-Iswardi-Santahar-Hili-Parabtipur-Nilphamari-Haldibari-Jalpaiguri-Siliguri.
A train station, railway station, railroad station, or depot (see below) is a railway facility where trains regularly stop to load or unload passengers or freight.
It generally consists of at least one track-side platform and a station building (depot) providing such ancillary services as ticket sales and waiting rooms. If a station is on a single-track line, it often has a passing loop to facilitate traffic movements. The smallest stations are most often referred to as "stops" or, in some parts of the world, as "halts" (flag stops).
Stations may be at ground level, underground, or elevated. Connections may be available to intersecting rail lines or other transport modes such as buses, trams or other rapid transit systems.
In the United States, the most common term in contemporary usage is train station. Railway station and railroad station are less frequent; also, American usage makes a distinction between the terms railroad and railway.
In Britain and other Commonwealth countries, traditional usage favours railway station or simply station, even though train station, which is often perceived as an Americanism, is now about as common as railway station in writing; railroad station is not used, railroad being obsolete there. In British usage, the word station is commonly understood to mean a railway station unless otherwise qualified.

A compilation of an entire journey in 12042 New Jalpaiguri Howrah Shatabdi Express on India's 70th Independence Day! Led by Siliguri WDP 4 #20049, the Shatabdi departs NJP at 5:34 am, delayed by 4 minutes. What follows is nothing short of awesome. Features high speed crossings with Uttar Banga Express, a horribly delayed Sikkim Mahananda Express, Brahmaputra Mail, Maa Tara Express, Padatik Express and Kumbha Express among plenty others. The showstoppers however are Darjeeling Mail and Howrah New Delhi Duronto at whizzing speeds! Don't miss out on Rivers Mahananda (we cross her four times), River Mayurakhshi and lastly River Ganga over the massive Farakka Dam. The best part however remains the run post Barddhaman where we do close to 125 kmph constantly giving this train the distinction ...

dOn the way from New Jalpaigudi to Gangtok
Harsh and I stood in neighboring doors to capture our train cross the mighty Ganga on the 2.24 km Farakka barrage. I observed water gushing through the opened sluice gates. A few minutes after that, we went through New Farakka station and then negotiated a huge curve to cross the feeder canal. This connects to the Hoogly river and is about 40 km long. Note the line from Azimganj-Ballarpur joining us from the left just before the feeder bridge. Feel free to check out the layout here - http://wikimapia.org/#lang=en⪫=24.793046&lon;=87.919121&z;=14 .
A train that needs no introduction; the 135 years old Darjeeling Mail. It is one of those few trains in India to run in Steam, Diesel as well as Electric Power. Coming from Kolkata, it's hard to believe that Darjeeling is actually in the same state, it's such a vastly different place. In order to get to Darjeeling, India, it's easiest to take the train to the nearest station which is located at New Jalpaiguri (known just as NJP by the train code). There's little to do in NJP, but from right outside the train station you can then board to a shared jeep and for 200 Rupees, you can take the jeep straight to Darjeeling. The jeep normally takes about 4 hours to reach the town and they wil...

Travel video about destination Darjeeling Himalayan Toy Train in Siliguri. The finest way to travel from Siliguri to Darjeeling is by way of the Darjeeling Himalaya Toy Train. The surroundings of Siliguri are well worth a visit and just a few kilometres away is Kali Mandir, a Hindu temple dedicated to the goddess, Kali and also Coronation Bridge an old but impressive structure that was designed and built by the British in 1930. The small train begins to move away slowly and travels through Siliguri, the buildings of which were constructed after the railroad. There is little traffic as only one train travels into the mountains each morning with another returning in the evening.
