Dynamic Braking | Diesel electric locomotives | Regenerative Braking
Diesel-electric and electric locomotives take advantage of the traction motor's ability to act as a generator to enable a form of braking power which, without the use of air or vacuum can be used as a speed controlling brake on grades or a slowing brake on level track. This is called dynamic braking.

Dynamic brake for induction motors
A little direct current can stop a small ac motor in a second! DC applied to the windings will make the motor work as a shortcircuited generator, thus creating a force opposite to its rotation. In the case of larger motors with low resistance windings, a 12 VDC power supply can be used instead of the capacitor, removing the diode and resistor R1. The DC supply must be able to feed the motor windings without being overloaded.

Dynamic brake controls emd sd 40-2
Maximum dynamic brake strength is obtained between 19 and 23 MPH, depending on traction motor gear ratio. Below 5 MPH dynamic braking is not very effective. Remember this is for our old DC units. AC units from what I'm told by those
who have run them, have better dynamic braking at lower speeds.
