The group behind Melbourne's newest drive-in are hopeful the rooftop cinematic experience will help lure crowds to the Docklands.

Opposite the Melbourne Star, the Backlot Rooftop Drive-in will have two decking areas for walk-ins, and 130 spots for cars.

It will be the first of its kind in Australia.

Founder Tony Yarniro said they were conscious of the windy conditions that often put off visitors to the Docklands.

They plan to open on Boxing Day.

"We are certainly very mindful of (the wind) and have taken a lot of time consulting with engineers to make sure the screens will stay in tact," he told Neil Mitchell.
