The younger brother of AFL coaches Chris and Brad Scott has died unexpectedly at the age of 37.

Death notices described Ben Scott, of Bonbeach in Melbourne's south-east, as a fun, caring and adventurous young man who loved the beach.

Fairfax Media understands he died of an anaphylactic reaction to some food on November 14. The funeral will be held on Thursday in Hawthorn.

He leaves behind a young son.

Despite their public roles, the senior coaches have been determined to keep it as a family affair, giving minimal information even to their respective clubs.

However, they are said to be understandably devastated by the tragedy.

It is expected that neither of the twins will go to Sydney for the AFL draft or coaches meeting on Friday.

Ben was the youngest of five siblings in the Scott family.

North Melbourne Football club was among those to pass on condolences to the Scott family.

Geelong Football Club declined to comment on the private family matter.
