Aluminium (or aluminum; see different endings) is a chemical element in the boron group with symbol Al and atomic number 13. It is a silvery-white, soft, nonmagnetic, ductile metal. Aluminium is the third most abundant element (after oxygen and silicon), and the most abundant metal, in the Earth's crust. It makes up about 8% by mass of the crust, though it is less common in the mantle below. Aluminium metal is so chemically reactive that native specimens are rare and limited to extreme reducing environments. Instead, it is found combined in over 270 different minerals. The chief ore of aluminium is bauxite.
Aluminium is remarkable for the metal's low density and for its ability to resist corrosion due to the phenomenon of passivation. Structural components made from aluminium and its alloys are vital to the aerospace industry and are important in other areas of transportation and structural materials, such as building facades and window frames. The most useful compounds of aluminium, at least on a weight basis, are the oxides and sulfates.
Aluminum production! HowStuffWorks is about the stuff that makes the world go 'round. It's truly incredible to see the ingenious lengths people go to in order to extract rubber and iron, corn and wheat, and water and salt from the earth. Equally amazing is the number of different and varied products that can be derived from something so fundamental. Follow the incredible journey of these goods from the ground to your dinner table, car, closet, medicine cabinet and places you may have never imagined. http://www.howstuffworks.com/
Backyard Scientists T-Shirts! Limited Edition campaign, buy one now! - http://shop.crowdmade.com/collections/backyardscientist/ I packed a fishtank completely full of water balls (water beads, water balz, orbeez, spitballs...). Im guessing there are over 10,000 in there! Anyway, I melted a bunch of old aluminum pipes and poured them into the fishtank hoping to create a cool design. And it worked perfectly! These are really unique, no two pieces are alike. Vat 19 was nice enough to supply me with the spitballs to use in this video :) https://www.vat19.com/item/spitballs-50-g-pack They are also posting a version of this on their youtube channel, which I will link to soon when its posted. An amazing sculpture is made by pouring molten aluminum into a fire ant colony. The resulting cast is huge, weighing 17.9 lbs. and reaching a depth of 18 inches. This is the full casting video which was recently shown in part on the Science Channel show Outrageous Acts of Science (Season 3, Episode 4 "Born to Be Wild"). See detailed pictures of the resulting cast on the Anthill Art website at http://www.anthillart.com/castings/043/ Anthill Art on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/anthillart These are the red imported fire ants (RIFA) which are harmful to the environment and their nests are exterminated by the millions in the United States using poisons, gasoline and fire, boiling water, and very rarely molten aluminum. On this video i'm casting a Bowie knife from start to finish. This knife is made out of copper and aluminum, i dont even know what to call it, i guess aluminum bronze knife or copperluminum. I started with 4 pounds of scrap copper, all i added was just 6 ounces of scrap aluminum to change the molten metal to gold color. Hope you enjoy this video. Aluminum (also called Aluminium) the chemical element of atomic number 13, symbol of Al. It belongs to the group 13 of the periodic table and the poor metals family. The simple aluminum body is a malleable metal, silver in color, noted for its resistance to oxydationnote 1 and its low density. This is the most abundant metal in the earth's crust and the third most abundant element after oxygen and silicon; it represents on average 8% of the mass of material of the solid surface of our planet. Aluminium is, in general, too reactive to exist in the native state in the naturelnote 2 medium: it is found on the contrary in combined form in over 270 different minerals, its main ore is bauxite, where it is present in the form of hydrous oxide of which alumina is extracted. It can also be extract...

I had 144 kg of scrap aluminum wich I decided to melt down into lingots for future green sand casting. The aluminum was checked for magnesium with vinegar. Sorted in I.- cast aluminum, II.- aluminum pipe, sheet, wire and other. Everything was melted using waste oil burner. It took me two days to melt everything. I wanted to cast a aluminum bat since I started thinking about metal casting, and now that I have all the necessary tools and materials I can do exactly that. Because of the big flask I used sodium silicate bonded sand instead of using green sand. I made a huge mistake by making the grooves on the handle recesses, that created a weak spot in the handle and that's where the bat failed. I'll have to fix the pattern. Here's where I learned everything about sodium silicate bonded sand casting: https://youtu.be/qPnSb3yzytE Music by: MDK and DaPlaque 1. Dr Humphries in Tampere, Finland, November 2015. Hear the arguments that pro-vaccine doctors make about aluminum (called aluminium in Europe), and the science (or lack there-of) behind it. Dr. Suzanne breaks down the issue of aluminum into fine detail to help you discuss this issue which is an Achilles heel in the vaccination argument.

Surround yourself with good people. That's my best piece of advice.
I'm tired of people pointing to Thinkpads and saying they are designed cheaply because the casing is not made of metal. It's not about material alone, but HOW you construct the device using the material. If you use the worst possible construction where the frame is thinner than a toothpick, and have this be where all the pressure from hinge movement resides, then it's going to break, regardless of what you make it out of.
