Waterford - Ireland Oldest City

Waterford City is the capital of the Sunny South East of Ireland and Ireland's oldest city.
Viking raiders first established a settlement near Waterford in 853AD. It and all the other longphorts were vacated in 902, the Vikings having been driven out by the native Irish. The Vikings re-established themselves in Ireland at Waterford in 914, led at first by Ottir Iarla (Jarl Ottar) until 917, and after that by Ragnall ua Ímair and the Uí Ímair dynasty, and built what would be Ireland's first city. Among the most prominent rulers of Waterford was Ivar (The Boneless) of Waterford.
In 1167, Diarmait Mac Murchadha, the deposed King of Leinster, failed in an attempt to take Waterford. He returned in 1170 with Cambro-Norman mercenaries under Richard de Clare, 2nd Earl of Pembroke (known as Strongbow); together they besieged and took the city after a desperate defence. In furtherance of the Norman invasion of Ireland, King Henry II of England landed at Waterford in 1171. Waterford and then Dublin were declared royal cities, with Dublin also declared capital of Ireland.
Throughout the medieval period, Waterford was Ireland's second city after Dublin. In the 15th century Waterford repelled two pretenders to the English throne: Lambert Simnel and Perkin Warbeck. As a result, King Henry VII gave the city its motto: Urbs Intacta Manet Waterfordia (Waterford remains the untaken city).
After the Protestant Reformation, Waterford remained a Catholic city and participated in the confederation of Kilkenny -- an independent Catholic government from 1642 to 1649. This was ended abruptly by Oliver Cromwell, who brought the country back under English rule; his nephew Henry Ireton finally took Waterford in 1650 after a major siege.
The 18th century was a period of huge prosperity for Waterford. Most of the city's best architecture appeared during this time. In the 19th century, great industries such as glass making and ship building thrived in the city.
The city hosts a number of festivals during the year including the ever-popular Spraoi.
A natural playground for Arts, Golf, Water Sports, Equestrian, Walking, Angling and Cycling enthusiasts, Waterford City and County offer the complete holiday experience.
Waterford City was founded by Viking traders in 914 and it has an exciting medieval flavour and riverside bustle.
The Waterford Museum of Treasures tells the 1100-year-story of Waterford from the treasures of Viking Waterford at Reginald's Tower, the oldest civic urban building in Ireland, to the story of Georgian Waterford at the Bishop's Palace from 1700 to 1970.
Waterford City is the home of Waterford Crystal, a lifestyle product of exquisite craftsmanship. A visit to the House of Crystal visitor centre includes an opportunity to choose from the world's largest selection of Waterford Crystal. The factory tour offers first hand access to all areas of traditional crystal production.
The city has a strong maritime tradition and an estimated 500,000 people enjoyed the colourful spectacle of the 2011 Tall Ships Race and festival of music and culture in the city and along the river Suir Estuary to Dunmore East.

Waterford
Waterford (from Old Norse Veðrafjǫrðr, meaning "ram (wether) fjord"; Irish: Port Láirge, meaning "Lárag's port") is a city in Ireland. It is in the South-East of Ireland and is part of the province of Munster. It is the oldest and the fifth most populous city within Ireland. It is the eighth most populous city on the island of Ireland. Waterford City and County Council is the local government authority for the city.
According to the 2011 Irish Census, there are 65,928 in the Waterford Metropolitan District, however it does not include its suburbs in County Kilkenny and County Wexford. There are over 80,000 within a 15km radius of the city centre.
Geography and local government
With a population of 46,732, Waterford is the fifth most populous city in the State and the 32nd most populous area of local government.
Following the Local Government Reform Act 2014, Waterford City and County Council is the local government authority for the city. The authority came into operation on 1 June 2014. Prior to this the city had its own local council, Waterford City Council. The new Council is the result of a merger of Waterford City Council and Waterford County Council. The Council has 32 representatives (councillors) who are elected from five electoral areas. The city itself forms three of the electoral areas – which when combined form the Metropolitan District of Waterford – and returns a total of 18 councillors to Waterford City and County Council. Residents in these areas are restricted to voting for candidates located in their ward for local elections. The office of the Mayor of Waterford was established in 1377. A mayor is then elected by the councillors from the two electoral areas of the Metropolitan District of Waterford every year, and there is no limit to the number of terms an individual may serve. Mary O'Halloran who was mayor during 2007–2008 was the first woman to hold the post. The current mayor is John Cummins.

Ireland Trip:Dublin/Waterford/Cork
In Order of appearance: Dublin- we only stayed one night here (don’t worry we come back at the end) Blooms Hotel, Temple Bar- Besides the cool mural on the wall, the modern rooms, and extremely friendly staff, the location is in Temple Bar so you can walk to everything. The only bad thing about it were the loud doors that would slam shut in the morning waking us up. Vat House (http://vathouse.ie) (Bar attached to the Blooms Hotel)- You get a voucher for a free (half pint) Guinness when you stay at the Blooms so we (eventually) took advantage of this. The beer flights feature big glasses filled with Irish staple beers along with a few craft beers, you’ll need to venture further to find more of Ireland’s craft beer. We ate some killer Irish Oysters; Kyle doesn’t usually like Oysters but ...

Johnstown Castle in Wexford (http://www.irishagrimuseum.ie/johnstown-castle-gardens/)- We decided to checkout our first castle on the way to Waterford. If you use your GPS, you’ll probably end up going in the wrong way (like we did), but everyone is very friendly in Ireland so don’t worry. You aren’t allowed to enter the castle but the grounds are very pretty. As a bonus we were visited by an extremely friendly (must be Irish) peacock.
Oskars in Waterford (http://www.oskars.ie)- We met up with Kieth the manager here and talked beer. They have a cool wall of beer so we asked if we could add an American to it: Dogfish Punk’n (one of our favorite pumpkin ales).
Eight Degrees Brewing in Michelstown (http://www.eightdegrees.ie)- They do not currently offer public tours so don’t show up here unannounced! This is were we hooked up with Caroline Hennessy for our Irish Craft Beer interview (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xX6K1PHh0Xw). Caroline showed us the facility where they brew and introduced to us to her Husband Scott(one of the owners and brewers). Then we saw the new building which they hope to move into soon. Great beers coming out of this place!
Tullys in Waterford (https://twitter.com/tullyswaterford)- We head back to Waterford in search for Tullys. This is a great bar for the beer lover! They have a good selection, but what makes it great is the friendly staff that will talk beer with you all day. We met Geraldine and Billy and they couldn’t have been more welcoming. We also took advantage of the nice weather in their outdoor beer garden area. Now just to clarify: Kyle was drinking the Yankee White IPA by Rascal’s Brewing Co (http://rascalsbrewing.com) and Shirley was drinking Bohemian Barefoot from Eight Degrees (http://www.eightdegrees.ie) and then we started to speak about Eight Degrees when she says “Amazing people” not that the people at Rascal’s aren’t amazing we just didn’t get to meet them.
Rock of Cashel in Cashel (http://cashel.ie)- We got here too late to actually get to explore it but I would highly recommend a visit it you can. There is so much history here. Anyways we snuck over the fence (don’t tell anyone) and took some beautiful pictures while some drunk teens walked past us.
Cork- We stayed here two nights an loved it. You can get great food as long as you do it before 10pm!!! The beer scene is great too if you know where to look.
Bodega at St. Peter’s Market in Cork (http://www.bodegacork.ie)- We at some greta food here and drank some beers from the Rising Sons Brew pUb across the street. Friendly staff, cool interior, nice place to eat.
Rising Sons Brewpub (https://www.facebook.com/RisingSONSbrewery/)- This place was cool even though they make their own beer they feature other breweries on their tap. They have big screen to watch the game and a nice selection of beers on tap.
Bierhouse in Cork (http://thebierhauscork.com) This place was awesome, it reminded me a lot of Blind Tiger NYC (http://www.blindtigeralehouse.com). The beers seemed endless, if you want to try Irish or English beers, or if you want to stay American, come here!

Vat House (http://vathouse.ie) (Bar attached to the Blooms Hotel)- You get a voucher for a free (half pint) Guinness when you stay at the Blooms so we (eventually) took advantage of this. The beer flights feature big glasses filled with Irish staple beers along with a few craft beers, you’ll need to venture further to find more of Ireland’s craft beer. We ate some killer Irish Oysters; Kyle doesn’t usually like Oysters but really enjoyed these.
Johnstown Castle in Wexford (http://www.irishagrimuseum.ie/johnstown-castle-gardens/)- We decided to checkout our first castle on the way to Waterford. If you use your GPS, you’ll probably end up going in the wrong way (like we did), but everyone is very friendly in Ireland so don’t worry. You aren’t allowed to enter the castle but the grounds are very pretty. As a bonus we were visited by an extremely friendly (must be Irish) peacock.
Oskars in Waterford (http://www.oskars.ie)- We met up with Kieth the manager here and talked beer. They have a cool wall of beer so we asked if we could add an American to it: Dogfish Punk’n (one of our favorite pumpkin ales).
Eight Degrees Brewing in Michelstown (http://www.eightdegrees.ie)- They do not currently offer public tours so don’t show up here unannounced! This is were we hooked up with Caroline Hennessy for our Irish Craft Beer interview (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xX6K1PHh0Xw). Caroline showed us the facility where they brew and introduced to us to her Husband Scott(one of the owners and brewers). Then we saw the new building which they hope to move into soon. Great beers coming out of this place!
Tullys in Waterford (https://twitter.com/tullyswaterford)- We head back to Waterford in search for Tullys. This is a great bar for the beer lover! They have a good selection, but what makes it great is the friendly staff that will talk beer with you all day. We met Geraldine and Billy and they couldn’t have been more welcoming. We also took advantage of the nice weather in their outdoor beer garden area. Now just to clarify: Kyle was drinking the Yankee White IPA by Rascal’s Brewing Co (http://rascalsbrewing.com) and Shirley was drinking Bohemian Barefoot from Eight Degrees (http://www.eightdegrees.ie) and then we started to speak about Eight Degrees when she says “Amazing people” not that the people at Rascal’s aren’t amazing we just didn’t get to meet them.
Rock of Cashel in Cashel (http://cashel.ie)- We got here too late to actually get to explore it but I would highly recommend a visit it you can. There is so much history here. Anyways we snuck over the fence (don’t tell anyone) and took some beautiful pictures while some drunk teens walked past us.
Cork- We stayed here two nights an loved it. You can get great food as long as you do it before 10pm!!! The beer scene is great too if you know where to look.
Bodega at St. Peter’s Market in Cork (http://www.bodegacork.ie)- We at some greta food here and drank some beers from the Rising Sons Brew pUb across the street. Friendly staff, cool interior, nice place to eat.
Rising Sons Brewpub (https://www.facebook.com/RisingSONSbrewery/)- This place was cool even though they make their own beer they feature other breweries on their tap. They have big screen to watch the game and a nice selection of beers on tap.
Bierhouse in Cork (http://thebierhauscork.com) This place was awesome, it reminded me a lot of Blind Tiger NYC (http://www.blindtigeralehouse.com). The beers seemed endless, if you want to try Irish or English beers, or if you want to stay American, come here!
