Tips to Stay Safe While Heating Your Home

Posted: Updated:

WESLACO--Saturday night's weather is supposed to dip down into the 40s. With it being so cold, the Weslaco fire department is releasing some tips to make sure you are safe when heating your home.

According to Weslaco fire lt. Efrain Bautista, people should not use their ovens to heat their homes because of carbon monoxide risks. There are also some guidelines to make sure your home doesn't catch on fire due to your space heater.

"Make sure that there's three feet around the space heater, both in front, sides, and back," Bautista said. "And there's no curtains close to it. There's no paper, no furniture, or any clothing close to the space heater because it will catch fire."

Cooler weather also comes with drier air and lower humidity, creating the possibility of a brush fire. If you are BBQing or burning a fire outside, keep a bucket of water nearby to extinguish flames.

If you don't have any way to keep warm in your home during the winter, there are some valley shelters open. The addresses are below.
