Road Repairs Scheduled Following Resident Concerns

Posted: Updated:

UPDATE (11/7): San Juan city officials said changes to Sergeant Leonel Trevino Road are coming soon.

San Juan city manager Benjamin Arjona said the rest of the road should be paved once an upgrade to a nearby drainage system is complete.

Residents complained the project had created problems like dusty conditions. Arjona said the paving should start by the latter part of next week or within the next couple of weeks.

“The residents or the people there should be seeing some paving improvements done to that street,” he said.

The city manager said the work should take no longer than two weeks.

CHANNEL 5 NEWS will continue to track the completion of the project.

SAN JUAN – Residents in one Rio Grande Valley city said a half-paved road is causing problems in their daily commute.

Norberto Perez said he moved to San Juan six months ago. He said Sergeant Leonel Trevino Road’s poor condition has stayed that way for too long.

“We have to go slow and go around potholes. I live close, that’s my advantage,” he said.

Perez said potholes and the uneven road causes major issues.

“On the street they are working, and it’s not paved because of that,” he said.

Perez said the condition of the road makes him drive more cautiously. He said many people don’t respect other drivers.

While we were talking to Perez, we saw handful of cars driving down on the wrong side of the road. Perez said this often happens as drivers try to avoid the potholes.

But Perez said sometimes you can’t steer clear of them. He fears being involved in an accident.

“You end driving directly to the potholes because another car can come right in front of you and you have no option,” he said.

CHANNEL 5 NEWS spoke to construction workers in the area. They said they were working on a storm drainage system on the other side of the neighborhood.

Perez also mentioned the extra loose dirt they use worsens the situation.

“It’s a problem. So much dust every day, and I have been talking to them. They say they’ll fix it, but need to collect the work they’re doing,” he said.

We visited city hall to ask city officials what could be done to fix the road. The city secretary said most of the staff was out on training.

We also sent an email to San Juan city manager Benjamin Arjona to get some answers. We are awaiting his response.

CHANNEL 5 NEWS will continue to follow the story and bring updates on when the work is finalized.
