Breaking the Barriers
Breaking the Barriers is a project KRGV CHANNEL 5 implemented to educate women on the facts about breast cancer and early detection. In the Rio Grande Valley, Hispanic women seek and attain health care services less frequently than any other ethnic group. Low income, low educational attainment, lack of health insurance, inability to speak English and lack of awareness of breast cancer risks and screening methods makes breast cancer the most commonly diagnosed cancer among Hispanic women.
KRGV CHANNEL 5 partnered with Valley Baptist Medical Centers in Harlingen and Brownsville and Doctors Hospital at Renaissance to offer mammogram screenings at a reduced cost of $99 during the month of October, which is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Last year, Doctors Hospital at Renaissance reported a 28-percent increase in mammograms during the project and Valley Baptist Medical in Harlingen and Brownsville reported 1,880 mammograms credited to the project.
