The French Institute's 'French Passions' series, in which authors come and discuss their favourite French writers, continues with Cambridge-born Simon McBurney who came to talk about the sixteenth-century French Renaissance writer and humanist François Rabelais.
Simon McBurney is an Olivier Award-winning and Tony-Award-nominated actor, writer and director. He is the founder and artistic director of the theatre company Complicite, which performs throughout the world. Among their latest productions was 'A Disappearing Number', a devised piece conceived and directed by McBurney, played at the Barbican in Autumn 2008 and toured internationally.
Boyd Tonkin, Literary Editor of The Independent, chaired the talk.

Simon McBurney
Simon Montagu McBurney, OBE (born 25 August 1957) is an English actor, writer and director. He is the founder and artistic director of the Théâtre de Complicité, London. He has had roles in the films The Manchurian Candidate (2004), Friends with Money (2006), The Golden Compass (2007), The Duchess (2008), Robin Hood (2010), Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 (2010), Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011), Magic in the Moonlight (2014), The Theory of Everything (2014).
Early life
McBurney was born in Cambridge, England. His father, Charles McBurney, was an American archaeologist and academic. Charles McBurney was the grandson of the American surgeon Charles McBurney (who was credited with describing medical sign McBurney's point, though critics have since challenged its existence). His mother, Anne Francis Edmondstone (née Charles), was a secretary; she was British, and of English, Scottish and Irish ancestry. His parents were distant cousins who met during World War II. He studied English literature at Peterhouse, Cambridge, graduating in 1980. After his father died, he moved to Paris and trained for the theatre at the Jacques Lecoq Institute.

Among their latest productions was 'A Disappearing Number', a devised piece conceived and directed by McBurney, played at the Barbican in Autumn 2008 and toured internationally.
Boyd Tonkin, Literary Editor of The Independent, chaired the talk.

Simon McBurney, creator/director and star of "The Encounter," discusses his engrossing and technically immersive solo show on Broadway, based on the true experience in 1969 of a National Geographic photographer, Loren McIntyre, lost in the Brazilian jungle. McIntyre became totally dependent for survival on a tribe of indigenous people there, the Mayoruna, who were in the process of fleeing the forces of civilization encroaching on their homeland in search of oil and other sources of wealth. McIntyre, caught up in the lifestyle and beliefs of the Mayoruna, joined them in their nomadic quest to find the "beginning of time" and redemption, a story that McBurney acts out in this remarkable show. Simon McBurney, creator/director and star of "The Encounter," discusses his engrossing and technically immersive solo show on Broadway, based on the true experience in 1969 of a National Geographic photographer, Loren McIntyre, lost in the Brazilian jungle. McIntyre became totally dependent for survival on a tribe of indigenous people there, the Mayoruna, who were in the process of fleeing the forces of civilization encroaching on their homeland in search of oil and other sources of wealth. McIntyre, caught up in the lifestyle and beliefs of the Mayoruna, joined them in their nomadic quest to find the "beginning of time" and redemption, a story that McBurney acts out in this remarkable show.
Next, we talk to British playwright/screenwriter Christopher Hampton, who adapted "Les Liaisons Dangereuses" from the scandalous 1782 epistolary novel by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos. Like the novel, Hampton's play became a huge and unexpected success when it premiered in 1985. Hampton is now overseeing its third Broadway production, starring Liev Schreiber and Janet McTeer.

Theater Talk is a series devoted to the world of the stage. It began on New York television in 1993 and is co-hosted by Michael Riedel (Broadway columnist for the New York Post) and series producer Susan Haskins.
The program is one of the few independent productions on PBS and now airs weekly on Thirteen/WNET in New York and WGBH in Boston. Now, CUNY TV offers New York City viewers additional opportunities to catch each week's show. (Of course, Theater Talk is no stranger to CUNY TV, since the show is taped here each week before its first airing on Thirteen/WNET.)
The series is produced by Theater Talk Productions, a not-for-profit corporation and is funded by contributions from private foundations and individuals, as well as The New York State Council on the Arts.

He is the founder and artistic director of the theatre company Complicite, which performs throughout the world. Among their latest productions was 'A Disappearing Number', a devised piece conceived and directed by McBurney, played at the Barbican in Autumn 2008 and toured internationally.
