We PAID to let these people take over our city?

Welcome pope fans!
Body of holy man arrives ahead of Pope
The body of an inspirational Catholic who died in 1925 has arrived in Sydney for World Youth Day.
The body of Pier Giorgio Frassati, who was beatified in 1990 by Pope John Paul II, has been transported from the Turin Cathedral to Sydney following a farewell mass. (more…)
Shaun Brown: Putting the BS in SBS
Thursday June 26th 2008, 4:03 pm
In the latest act of philistinism at SBS, the former public service broadcaster, now packed with ads and shows designed to attract just about anyone but those with an interest in foreign language programming, has been ‘rebranded.’ In an incredibly lame attempt to play on the Special Broadcasting Service acronym, the tagline ‘Six billion stories and counting…’ has been added…
…which is somehow vaguely reminiscent of some other massively crass commercialism…

NSW water policy: A quid each way
Thursday June 19th 2008, 12:09 pm
Since reservoir levels have risen to 65%, NSW will relax water restrictions as of this weekend, allowing residents to wash cars with trigger-spray hoses.
In other news, construction sallies forth on the $2 billion desalination plant at Kurnell, which will consume massive amounts of (wind farmed?) electricity and yet only be able to supply 20% of Sydney’s water needs. Sydney Water have received approval to increase the average home’s water costs by $245 per annum by 2012 to fund the desal plant.
I wonder how many car washes (and toilet flushes) with drinking water you get for $2billion. I’d hazard a guess that $2billion would probably significantly subsidise a hell of a lot of rainwater tanks for watering gardens, washing cars and flushing toilets, requiring no electricity, wind powered or not.

Hetty McCarthy

No prosecution, but campaign goes on
David Marr and Josephine Tovey
June 7, 2008
NOT everyone has thrown in the towel. NSW police admitted yesterday afternoon that Bill Henson could not be charged. “But we’re not going to let it go,” declared the campaigner Hetty Johnston. “If the law is so pathetic it can’t protect our children it needs to change.”
Hetty Johnston has patently unwisely decided to tread the path of ‘a ped under every bed.’ Johnston makes it quite clear that she thinks Bill Henson is a child pornographer. Fairly obviously, anyone who disagrees with her could not be anything other than a paedophile, a sympathiser or is plainly lost in the delusion that graphical depictions of nudity could be anything other than porn. Barack Obama looks set to clinch the Democratic Party nod.
Hilly hangs on, says, “Me too.” I say “beggar off.” She and Bill are cut from the same ‘as conservative as you can get while still calling yourself a Democrat’ cloth. No thanks. Although, I certainly won’t not vote for Obama if Hilly is the running mate.
John Edwards would make an infinitely better VP. If Al Gore could be persuaded to play second banana again, seismic shifts of the magnitude of Cheney’s shenanigans, but for the benefit of the people, are in the offing.
After nearly a year and a half of the primary races, even though resident in Australia where I’m largely insulated from American politics, I’m still a bit jack of it all.
Just send me my absentee ballot and let’s get this show on the road.
