It showed a man covering his face with a hoodie before attempting to jump into the front seat of Ms Van Luyn's car as she unscrewed her fuel cap.

She then tried to pull the man out of the vehicle but he turned and hit her twice, causing her to "black out" and fall to the ground.

He then fled with a bag that was on her front seat.

The 27-year-old told Nine News Perth she thought the man who hit her "was disgusting" and that he was trying to steal her car.

"I had my car keys inside my pocket and then he grabbed my bag," Ms Van Luyn said.

"I grabbed my bag and said 'help', and he just punched me.

"Your behaviour is disgusting. You have no soul. How dare you punch a woman."

Ms Van Luyn suffered a swollen jaw, a deep cut inside her mouth and a sprained ankle.

The bag that was stolen contained a computer and university work, which Ms Van Luyn said she desperately needed to study for her end-of-year exams.

Ms Van Luyn said the laptop had since been recovered but was broken.

"My belonging has been found but the laptop is totally broken and I just sent it to repair to check if I can still back up my data," she said.

"The books and the papers are scattered everywhere at Tonkin Highway.

"Thank you so much for the person who found them and gave it to the police station. You don't know how much your help mean to me."
