Tbilisi

Tbilisi (Georgian: თბილისი [tʰˈbiliˌsi]), commonly known by its former name Tiflis, and often mispronounced as Tiblisi, is the capital and the largest city of Georgia, lying on the banks of the Kura River with a population of roughly 1.5 million inhabitants. Founded in the 5th century by the monarch of Georgia's ancient precursor Kingdom of Iberia, Tbilisi has since served, with intermissions, as the capital of various Georgian kingdoms and republics. Under the Russian rule, from 1801 to 1917 Tiflis was the seat of the Imperial Viceroy governing both sides of the entire Caucasus.

Located on the southeastern edge of Europe, Tbilisi's proximity to lucrative east-west trade routes often made the city a point of contention between various rival empires throughout history and the city's location to this day ensures its position as an important transit route for global energy and trade projects. Tbilisi's varied history is reflected in its architecture, which is a mix of medieval, classical, and Soviet structures.

Gülhan Şen

Gülhan Şen (born July 16, 1978) is a Turkish television presenter, producer, and speaker.

Biography

Gülhan Şen was born in Shumen, Bulgaria and completed primary school there. In 1985, her name changed to Galina Hristova Mihaylova due to a compulsory name change law, and a compulsory immigration law applied to Turks brought her to Turkey in 1989.

Şen graduated from Muhsin Adil Binal Ilkogretim Okulu (secondary school) and Kabatas Erkek Lisesi (high school) in Turkey, and studied radio and television at Istanbul University Communication Faculty. In London, Şen took courses on "Television News and Programs Preparation" at Reuters News Agency.

Career

Şen worked at HBB, BRT, Star TV and CNN Turk. After directing Turk Sinemasi 2003 ("Turkish Cinema 2003") and Sis Bulutunun Ardinda: Alzheimer ("Fog Clouds: Alzheimer"), she carried on her career by preparing, presenting and directing for the TV 8 Zamanin Ruhu: Zeitgeist ("Spirit of Time: Zeitgeist") programme. On 3 October 2007, her new programme Gulhan’in Galaksi Rehberi ("Gulhan’s Guide to the Galaxy"), a travel show primarily about travel abroad, began on TV 8.

Travel Channel

Travel Channel (originally The Travel Channel from 1987 to 1999) is an American basic cable and satellite television channel that is owned as a joint venture between Scripps Networks Interactive (which owns 65% of the network) and Cox Communications (which owns the remaining 35% interest). The channel is headquartered in Chevy Chase, Maryland, United States.

It features documentaries, reality, and how-to shows related to travel and leisure around the United States and throughout the world. Programming has included shows on African animal safaris, tours of grand hotels and resorts, visits to significant cities and towns across the world, programming about various foods across the world, and programming about ghosts and the paranormal in notable buildings.

As of February 2015, Travel Channel is available to approximately 91.5 million pay television households (78.6% of households with television) in the United States.

History

The Travel Channel was launched on February 1, 1987; it was founded by Trans World Airlines, presumably to boost airline patronage. The channel's name was derived from the travel-related filler programming that aired between programs on the Home Theater Network. TWA purchased the name rights from Group W Satellite Communications in 1986, and took over HTN's transponder spot following the shutdown of the premium cable channel in January 1987. The network was later sold to Landmark Communications, then-owner of The Weather Channel, and eventually to Paxson Communications.
