1,500 military personnel from 16 NATO Allies and partner nations are gathered together in the Czech Republic to train their JTACS or Joint Terminal Attack Controllers. New Yars ICBM is Russia’s Answer to NATO’s First-Strike-Enabling Missile Shield
When playing with the possibility of nuclear annihilation, NATO should not be relying on probability.
The Cold War doctrine of Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD) ensured that neither side had an incentive to use nuclear weapons, as doing so would result in the other side’s nuclear response, resulting in mutually assured destruction, hence the apposite abbreviation, MAD.
This strategic balance during the Cold War meant that nuclear war was unthinkable. But the development of a missile shield, particularly following the end of the Cold War, meant that nuclear war could now start to become thinkable. If one side could use nuclear weapons without having to worry about the other side responding in kind, then the resulting destruction would not be mutual. The use of nuclear weapons against a nuclear-armed opponent would no longer be MAD.
Russia has been watching with mounting concern not only NATO’s encroachment on Russia’s traditional sphere of interest (after having promised not to do so), but its determination to place its missile-shield elements right on Russia’s borders, to provide the best chance of intercepting a retaliatory response. Such systems can only serve one purpose: to nullify Russia’s nuclear deterrent and thereby allow NATO a nuclear first strike.
In response to this looming threat, Russia has been focussing on nuclear missiles that can penetrate NATO’s missile shield, and therefore deter NATO, such as the Bulava SLBM and the Topol and Topol-M road-mobile ICBMS, and now the Yars as successor to the Topol-M.
These inter-continental ballistic missiles seek to launch very fast, thereby limiting the vulnerable launch phase, then fly on an unpredictable trajectory, to make interception difficult, then in the terminal phase, not only engage in evasive maneuvers, but release multiple re-entry vehicles (MIRVs), while doing all this at a blistering speed. Moreover, these missiles are not silo-based but mobile, the Bulava being anywhere in the vast oceans, and the Yars being anywhere within Russia’s vast hinterland, thereby making them more survivable in the event of a NATO first strike.
But NATO nevertheless continues to surround Russia with its first-strike-enabling missile shield. Because, it seems, it no longer thinks nuclear war is MAD. Because, it seems, it no longer thinks Russia offers a credible nuclear deterrent. It probably thinks these sophisticated missiles will not penetrate their missile shield. Probably.

The Kalibr (Russian: Калибр) missile system are Russian land-attack cruise missile, anti-ship missile and anti-submarine missile developed by the Novator Design Bureau (OKB-8). Its NATO codename is "Sizzler". Derived export versions are the 3M-54E and the 3M-54E1. The 3M-54E has a US DoD name SS-N-27B; (it does not have a NATO codename). The 3M-54, 3M-54E, 3M-54TE and 3M-54AE have a second stage that performs a supersonic sprint in the terminal approach to the target, reducing the time that target's defense systems have to react. The 3M-54E1 only travels at subsonic speeds during its entire flight, though range is longer than that of the supersonic versions accordingly.

The Naval Strike Missile (NSM) is a long-range, anti-ship missile that provides superior strike capability against land and sea targets with a range of just over 100 nautical miles. NSM blends technologies to give it a high level of survivability. The missile is difficult for enemy radars to detect, and its sophisticated flight capabilities allow it to reach targets in the most challenging environments. Developed by Kongsberg Defence Systems in Norway, NSM is the main weapon for the Norwegian Navy's frigate and corvette ship classes, and Poland's truck-mounted coastal defense system. In April 2015, Raytheon Company announced a partnership with Kongsberg for the NSM.
FEATURES:
- Identifies and classifies targets and their aim points using an advanced imaging infrared seeker with autonomous target recognition;
- Emits low observable signals to avoid detection by enemy radars;
- Climbs and descends with the terrain;

When searching for missiles for its new frigates and coastal corvettes, the Royal Norwegian Navy studied thoroughly existing missiles on the market and the planned upgrades of these. None of these missiles were found to satisfy the requirements of a modern navy well into 2015 and beyond. It was therefore decided to develop a completely new missile based on latest technology, the NSM.
NSM is the only fifth generation long range precision strike missile in existence as per today. Already chosen by the Royal Norwegian Navy for its new frigates and new coastal corvettes, the NSM will be fully operational on these ships when they enter service in the near future. The NSM is also selected by the Polish Navy for use on its new coastal artillery installations.
The NSM is a very flexible system which can be launched from a variety of platforms against a variety of targets.
The airframe design and the high thrust to weight ratio gives the NSM extremely good maneuverability. The missile is completely passive, has proven its excellent sea skimming capabilities and with its advance terminal maneuvers it will survive the enemy air defences. The Autonomous Target Recognition (ATR) of the seeker ensures that the correct target is detected, recognised and hit, at sea or on land.
Being a cost effective system which has demonstrated unsurpassed capabilities in numerous tests, the international interest for this missile is strongly increasing in NATO and other countries.

Separate NATO raids blasted Montenegro on Wednesday, two appearing to hit the airport in the capital Podgorica, another the port at Bar.
Until now, Yugoslavia's pro-Western junior republic of Montenegro has been spared most of NATO's attacks.
But the Yugoslav navy docks at the Bar Port, and there have been increasing fears that Belgrade's army will attempt to unseat the Podgorica government.
Smoke billowed over the Podgorica city skyline moments after the blasts were heard coming from the direction of the city's airport.
The Wednesday afternoon strike followed earlier NATO attacks on Sipcanik hill outside Podgorica and four hits at the capital's Golubovci airfield.
Alliance jets also struck three villages surrounding the airport in the area of Zeta, where Yugoslav air defence units are based.
The morning strikes for the first daylight attacks on a country that until now has largely been spared NATO air raids.
NATO has largely spared Montenegro in its air campaign against Yugoslavia, indicating its support for the republic's pro-Western government.
Wednesday's strikes there were the first in 10 days.
Immediately after the afternoon blasts, Podgorica residents emerged onto balconies and clambered onto rooftops to watch the edge of their city burn.
Others stopped in the streets, gaping at the sky for a glimpse of the NATO fighter planes that occasionally thundered overhead.
One man was reported injured.
Meanwhile in the port of Bar, workers rushed home as anti-aircraft fire erupted in the afternoon.

Witnesses said Yugoslav army ships fired at allied aircraft, along with the Montenegran anti-aircraft fire.
Local residents and port workers say their country has every right to fire back at the NATO attackers.

Russia’s Moskva Missile Cruiser, Dubbed A “Carrier Killer” by NATO.
The ship is currently held under the patronage of the city of Moscow.
Slava was laid down in 1976 in Shipyard 445 of the 61 Kommunara Shipbuilding Plant in Mykolaiv, was launched in 1979, and commissioned on 30 January 1983. Slava returned to Mykolaiv in December 1990 for a refit but was not returned to service until April 2000. Recommissioned as Moskva, she replaced the Kynda class cruiser Admiral Golovko as the flagship of the Black Sea Fleet.
In early April 2003, Moskva, along with Pytlivy, Smetlivy, and a landing ship departed Sevastopol for exercises in the Indian Ocean with a Pacific Fleet task group (Marshal Shaposhnikov and Admiral Panteleyev) and the Indian Navy. The force was supported by the Project 1559V tanker Ivan Bubnov and the Project 712 ocean-going tug Shakhter.
In August 2008, in response to the Georgian crisis, the Moskva was deployed to secure the Black Sea. After Russia's recognition of Abkhazia's independence, the ship was stationed at the Abkhazian capital, Sukhumi.
On 3 December 2009 the Moskva was laid up for a month at floating dock PD-30 for a scheduled interim overhaul which comprised replacement of cooling and other machinery, reclamation work at bottom and outboard fittings, propulsion shafts and screws, clearing and painting of bottom and above-water parts of the ship's hull.
In April 2010 it was reported that the cruiser would join other navy units in the Indian Ocean to conduct exercises.

Royal Norwegian Navy
The Royal Norwegian Navy (Norwegian: Sjøforsvaret, "the naval defence (forces)") is the branch of the Norwegian Armed Forces responsible for naval operations of the state of Norway. As of 2008, the RNoN consists of approximately 3,700 personnel (9,450 in mobilized state, 32,000 when fully mobilized) and 70 vessels, including 5 heavy frigates, 6 submarines, 14 patrol boats, 4 minesweepers, 4 minehunters, 1 mine detection vessel, 4 support vessels and 2 training vessels. The navy also includes the Coast Guard.
The Royal Norwegian Navy has a history dating back to 955. From 1509 to 1814, it formed part of the navy of Denmark-Norway, also referred to as the "Common Fleet". Since 1814, the Royal Norwegian Navy has again existed as a separate navy.
In Norwegian, Royal Norwegian Navy vessels have since 1946 been given the ship prefix "KNM", short for Kongelig Norske Marine (Royal Norwegian Navy). Naval Strike Missile
The Naval Strike Missile (NSM) is an anti-ship and land-attack missile developed by the Norwegian company Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace (KDA).
The original Norwegian name was Nytt sjømålsmissil (literally New sea target missile, indicating that it is the successor of the Penguin missile); the English marketing name Naval Strike Missile was adopted later.
Development
The Naval Strike Missile's initial serial production contract was signed in June 2007. It has been chosen by the Royal Norwegian Navy for its new Fridtjof Nansen class frigates and Skjold class patrol boats. In December 2008 the NSM was selected by the Polish Navy, which ordered total 50 land-based missiles (including 2 for testing) under deals from 2008 and 2011, with delivery planned for 2013-2016.
The final milestone was completed in June 2011 with tests at Point Mugu. On 12 April 2011, the Norwegian Ministry of Defense announced phase 2 of development.
On Wednesday, October 10, 2012, the Royal Norwegian Navy marked history by firing an NSM anti-ship missile for the first time. The vessel in question was the HNoMS Glimt, Skjold class patrol boat.

Developed by Kongsberg Defence Systems in Norway, NSM is the main weapon for the Norwegian Navy's frigate and corvette ship classes, and Poland's truck-mounted coastal defense system. In April 2015, Raytheon Company announced a partnership with Kongsberg for the NSM. FEATURES: - Identifies and classifies targets and their aim points using an advanced imaging infrared seeker with autonomous target recognition; - Emits low observable signals to avoid detection by enemy radars; - Climbs and descends with the terrain; - Performs evasive maneuvers to counter the world's most capable defense systems; - Carries a programmable fuze warhead. When searching for missiles for its new frigates and coastal corvettes, the Royal Norwegian Navy studied thoroughly existing missiles on the market and the planned upgrades of these. None of these missiles were found to satisfy the requirements of a modern navy well into 2015 and beyond. The NSM is a very flexible system which can be launched from a variety of platforms against a variety of targets. The airframe design and the high thrust to weight ratio gives the NSM extremely good maneuverability. The missile is completely passive, has proven its excellent sea skimming capabilities and with its advance terminal maneuvers it will survive the enemy air defences. The Autonomous Target Recognition (ATR) of the seeker ensures that the correct target is detected, recognised and hit, at sea or on land. English/Nat Separate NATO raids blasted Montenegro on Wednesday, two appearing to hit the airport in the capital Podgorica, another the port at Bar. Until now, Yugoslavia's pro-Western junior republic of Montenegro has been spared most of NATO's attacks. But the Yugoslav navy docks at the Bar Port, and there have been increasing fears that Belgrade's army will attempt to unseat the Podgorica government. Smoke billowed over the Podgorica city skyline moments after the blasts were heard coming from the direction of the city's airport. The Wednesday afternoon strike followed earlier NATO attacks on Sipcanik hill outside Podgorica and four hits at the capital's Golubovci airfield. Alliance jets also struck three villages surrounding the airport in the area of Zeta, where Yugoslav air defence units are based. The morning strikes for the first daylight attacks on a country that until now has largely been spared NATO air raids. NATO has largely spared Montenegro in its air campaign against Yugoslavia, indicating its support for the republic's pro-Western government. Wednesday's strikes there were the first in 10 days. Immediately after the afternoon blasts, Podgorica residents emerged onto balconies and clambered onto rooftops to watch the edge of their city burn. Others stopped in the streets, gaping at the sky for a glimpse of the NATO fighter planes that occasionally thundered overhead. One man was reported injured. Meanwhile in the port of Bar, workers rushed home as anti-aircraft fire erupted in the afternoon. UPSOUND: (English) (Off camera) "Isn't that anti-aircraft fire? (Off camera) "Yes." Local residents and port workers say their country has every right to fire back at the NATO attackers. Slava was laid down in 1976 in Shipyard 445 of the 61 Kommunara Shipbuilding Plant in Mykolaiv, was launched in 1979, and commissioned on 30 January 1983. Slava returned to Mykolaiv in December 1990 for a refit but was not returned to service until April 2000. Recommissioned as Moskva, she replaced the Kynda class cruiser Admiral Golovko as the flagship of the Black Sea Fleet. In early April 2003, Moskva, along with Pytlivy, Smetlivy, and a landing ship departed Sevastopol for exercises in the Indian Ocean with a Pacific Fleet task group (Marshal Shaposhnikov and Admiral Panteleyev) and the Indian Navy. The force was supported by the Project 1559V tanker Ivan Bubnov and the Project 712 ocean-going tug Shakhter. New Yars ICBM is Russia’s Answer to NATO’s First-Strike-Enabling Missile Shield
When playing with the possibility of nuclear annihilation, NATO should not be relying on probability.
The Cold War doctrine of Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD) ensured that neither side had an incentive to use nuclear weapons, as doing so would result in the other side’s nuclear response, resulting in mutually assured destruction, hence the apposite abbreviation, MAD.
This strategic balance during the Cold War meant that nuclear war was unthinkable. But the development of a missile shield, particularly following the end of the Cold War, meant that nuclear war could now start to become thinkable. If one side could use nuclear weapons without having to worry about the other side responding in kind, then the resulting destruction would not be mutual. The use of nuclear weapons against a nuclear-armed opponent would no longer be MAD.
Russia has been watching with mounting concern not only NATO’s encroachment on Russia’s traditional sphere of interest (after having promised not to do so), but its determination to place its missile-shield elements right on Russia’s borders, to provide the best chance of intercepting a retaliatory response. Such systems can only serve one purpose: to nullify Russia’s nuclear deterrent and thereby allow NATO a nuclear first strike.
In response to this looming threat, Russia has been focussing on nuclear missiles that can penetrate NATO’s missile shield, and therefore deter NATO, such as the Bulava SLBM and the Topol and Topol-M road-mobile ICBMS, and now the Yars as successor to the Topol-M.
These inter-continental ballistic missiles seek to launch very fast, thereby limiting the vulnerable launch phase, then fly on an unpredictable trajectory, to make interception difficult, then in the terminal phase, not only engage in evasive maneuvers, but release multiple re-entry vehicles (MIRVs), while doing all this at a blistering speed. Moreover, these missiles are not silo-based but mobile, the Bulava being anywhere in the vast oceans, and the Yars being anywhere within Russia’s vast hinterland, thereby making them more survivable in the event of a NATO first strike.
But NATO nevertheless continues to surround Russia with its first-strike-enabling missile shield. Because, it seems, it no longer thinks nuclear war is MAD. Because, it seems, it no longer thinks Russia offers a credible nuclear deterrent. It probably thinks these sophisticated missiles will not penetrate their missile shield. Probably.

Russia’s Moskva Missile Cruiser, Dubbed A “Carrier Killer” by NATO.
The ship is currently held under the patronage of the city of Moscow.
Slava was laid down in 1976 in Shipyard 445 of the 61 Kommunara Shipbuilding Plant in Mykolaiv, was launched in 1979, and commissioned on 30 January 1983. Slava returned to Mykolaiv in December 1990 for a refit but was not returned to service until April 2000. Recommissioned as Moskva, she replaced the Kynda class cruiser Admiral Golovko as the flagship of the Black Sea Fleet.
In early April 2003, Moskva, along with Pytlivy, Smetlivy, and a landing ship departed Sevastopol for exercises in the Indian Ocean with a Pacific Fleet task group (Marshal Shaposhnikov and Admiral Panteleyev) and the Indian Navy. The force was supported by the Project 1559V tanker Ivan Bubnov and the Project 712 ocean-going tug Shakhter.
In August 2008, in response to the Georgian crisis, the Moskva was deployed to secure the Black Sea. After Russia's recognition of Abkhazia's independence, the ship was stationed at the Abkhazian capital, Sukhumi.
On 3 December 2009 the Moskva was laid up for a month at floating dock PD-30 for a scheduled interim overhaul which comprised replacement of cooling and other machinery, reclamation work at bottom and outboard fittings, propulsion shafts and screws, clearing and painting of bottom and above-water parts of the ship's hull.
In April 2010 it was reported that the cruiser would join other navy units in the Indian Ocean to conduct exercises.

When searching for missiles for its new frigates and coastal corvettes, the Royal Norwegian Navy studied thoroughly existing missiles on the market and the planned upgrades of these. None of these missiles were found to satisfy the requirements of a modern navy well into 2015 and beyond. It was therefore decided to develop a completely new missile based on latest technology, the NSM.
NSM is the only fifth generation long range precision strike missile in existence as per today. Already chosen by the Royal Norwegian Navy for its new frigates and new coastal corvettes, the NSM will be fully operational on these ships when they enter service in the near future. The NSM is also selected by the Polish Navy for use on its new coastal artillery installations.
The NSM is a very flexible system which can be launched from a variety of platforms against a variety of targets.
The airframe design and the high thrust to weight ratio gives the NSM extremely good maneuverability. The missile is completely passive, has proven its excellent sea skimming capabilities and with its advance terminal maneuvers it will survive the enemy air defences. The Autonomous Target Recognition (ATR) of the seeker ensures that the correct target is detected, recognised and hit, at sea or on land.
