Emily Skye: happier and healthier after putting on 13 kilograms

Emily Skye, one of social media's most well known fitness personalities, has revealed that putting on 13 kilograms has helped her to become happier and healthier.

The Australian, from the Gold Coast, has opened up about her battle with her body and cautioned her 1.8 million Instagram followers against liking her thinner 'before' photo without reading her story.

"This is before I started strength training," the 31-year-old personal trainer wrote of the first photo. "I was obsessed with being as skinny as I could be. I was starving myself & was really unhealthy & unhappy. I suffered depression & had terrible body image."

Before anyone whips out the "I like the before pic better" comments, read the following: - 1st pic: 2008 / 47kg This is before I started strength training. I was only doing cardio & I was obsessed with being as skinny as I could be. I was starving myself & was really unhealthy & unhappy. I suffered depression & had terrible body image. 2nd pic: 2016 / 60kg I now weigh 13kg more, I lift heavy weights & do a little bit of HIIT. I dont do ANY long cardio sessions & I eat more than I've ever eaten in my life. I'm also happier, healthier, stronger & fitter than I have ever been. I no longer obsess over the way I look. I eat & train to feel my best, for overall "health" & longevity. I LOVE having muscle & I feel more confident than ever. When I first started lifting weights 7 years ago, I was finally starting to become healthy & happy for the first time in my life. I had friends at the time telling me I wasn't healthy & was taking it "too far". - This devastated me & had me in tears! I couldn't believe that the people who were supposed to love me weren't happy for me even though I was obviously much happier & healthier than I'd ever been. Luckily I decided not to listen to their put downs and kept going with my new healthy lifestyle & here I am today the best I've ever been, and I no longer have those "so called" friends. I now surround myself with positive, supportive people who are true friends to me! I love my life & I'm so grateful I decided to make those changes several years ago & committed to my healthy lifestyle. Now I'm able to help others become their best too! - My F.I.T. Programs that I created are all based around strength training & HIIT - it's what's given me & thousands of other ladies amazing, healthy, lasting results. (Click the link in my profile to join!) Exercise & eat nutritious food because you LOVE yourself & know that you deserve to be your best. Try not to focus on being "skinny" & just focus on your overall health - mental & physical. Don't listen to anyone who tries to bring you down. Surround yourself with positive, supportive, like-minded people & always do what makes you happy regardless of what anyone else thinks!

Skye, a former model who began documenting her fitness journey and foray into health seven years ago, said she swapped cardio for strength training and stopped obssessing about what she ate.

She now eats "more than I've ever eaten in my life" and feels better in her body.

My Meal & Exercise ProgramsLink in profile ~ I see people making negative comments about themselves daily.. such as "I can never be like that", "I can never be in shape" "I don't like myself" "I hate my body" "I'm not good enough" "I have so far to go until I reach my goal" etc etc. Saying these things is not helping you achieve anything and it's definitely not encouraging! Stop ruining it before you even properly try, stop telling yourself you can't achieve something before you even commit yourself, stop criticising yourself for everything you aren't and start being more positive about yourself!! You CAN reach your goals so stop hiding behind all the reasons why you think you can't and tell yourself you CAN! Everything you want in your life starts with YOU and what YOU think!! You think this is all BS? Well try it for yourself, then judge Start changing the way you think! Start appreciating the life you've been given, start believing in yourself and encouraging yourself to go for the things you want and stop all this self sabotage and restrictions you put on yourself! Start living at your full potential! Forget about what anyone else is doing, or what they have that you don't.. Focusing on that will NEVER achieve anything good! Say these words right now: "I will (insert what your goal is)" "I am good enough" "I am capable" "I deserve this" "I don't care what others think" "I'm doing this for me" "I take control of my life" "I am happy, positive and determined" "Nothing and NOBODY is going to stop me!" - Or make up your own affirmations! Say these everyday! Even though you might feel silly just do it anyway! especially before you go to a job interview, meeting or some other situation that you might be feeling uncomfortable or scared about. Affirmations and self belief have honestly helped me SO much and I hope they can help you too! Skye is not the first 'fitspo' celebrity to remind that skinny does not make for happy or healthy.

American trainer Kelsey Wells recently revealed that putting on eight kilograms and going up two pant sizes made her realise that scales are not a measure of 'success'.

"According to my old self and flawed standards, I would be failing miserably," Wells writes. "THANK GOODNESS I finally learnt to start measuring my progress by things that matter – strength, ability, endurance, health, and HAPPINESS."

SCREW THE SCALE || I figured it was time for a friendly, yet firm reminder. YOU GUYS. PLEASEEEEEE STOP GETTING HUNG UP ON THE NUMBER ON THE STUPUD SCALE! PLEASE STOP THINKING YOUR WEIGHT EQUALS YOUR PROGRESS AND FOR THE LOVE OF EVERYTHING PLEASE STOP LETTING YOR WEIGHT HAVE ANY AFFECT WHATSOEVER ON YOUR SELF ESTEEM, like I used to. To any of you who are where I once was, please listen to me. I am 5' 7" and weigh 140 lbs. When I first started #bbg I was 8 weeks post partum and 145 lbs. I weighed 130 before getting pregnant, so based on nothing besides my own warped perception, I decided my "goal weight" should be 122 and to fit into my skinniest jeans. Well after a few months of BBG and breastfeeding, I HIT IT and I fit into those size 0 jeans. Well guess what? I HAVE GAINED 18 POUNDS SINCE THEN. EIGHT FREAKING TEEN. Also, I have gone up two pant sizes and as a matter of fact I ripped those skinny jeans wide open just the other week trying to pull them up over my knees. My point?? According to my old self and flawed standards, I would be failing miserably. THANK GOODNESS I finally learned to start measuring my progress by things that matter -- strength, ability, endurance, health, and HAPPINESS. Take progress photos and videos. Record how many push-ups you can do, ect. And if you can, your BFP -- there is only a 5 lb difference between my starting and current weight, but my body composition has changed COMPLETELY. I have never had more muscle and less body fat than I do now. I have never been healthier than I am now. I have never been more comfortable in my own skin than I am now. And if I didn't say #screwthescale long ago, I would have gave up on my journey. So to the little teeny tiny voice in the back of my head that still said "wtf is this- not 140!?" last week when I stepped on the scale, I say SCREW. YOU. And I think you should probably say the same to your scale too. #byefelicia  . . #bbgprogress #transformationtuesday #fit #fitness #workout #fitmom #fitchick #fitfam #fitnesstransformation #beforeandafter #sweat #mysweatlife #girlswithmuscle #girlgains #strongnotskinny

She added that although she is only two kilograms lighter than her heaviest weight after giving birth, her body composition has changed.

"I have never had more muscle and less body fat than I do now," Wells says in the post, which has had more than 18,000 likes. "I have never been healthier than I am now. I have never been more comfortable in my own skin than I am now."

SCREW THE SCALE || I will never stop advocating for this because I want every girl to stop basing her progress, health, and happiness on a number that can't in fact measure ANY of those things. || Photos: 8wks post partum (start of BBG), about 24 wks into BBG (my old "goal weight" and my thinnest), to now (86 wks of @kayla_itsines #BBG program). My legs are about the same size in the first and last pics! BUT they are a different shape now and no longer covered in cellulite. My bum is actually quite BIGGER than when I started, but it is toned and lifted. (I always had a super flat bum so this is hard earned) || As I mentioned in my last saga about this, when I first saw my weight going up, I panicked. I specifically remember telling my husband "Babe! I am losing all my progress! I don't get it!" to which he wisely replied "Kelsey you are crazy. Stop looking at the scale and look in the mirror. Look at what you can accomplish now. You are happy and healthy so if you're gaining weight IT DOESN'T MATTER." It took me a while to believe him, but after quite a mental battle I realized he was absolutely right, and I literally did throw away our scale. I was able to re-evaluate my goals and my standard for "progress". I finally let go of fitting into a certain size, weighing a certain number, and the unhealthy self-inflicted belief that I should always look like that middle photo because my thighs were far apart and you could basically see my bones. I was stronger and healthier than ever, so I decided to carry on with my healthy lifestyle and focus on loving and discovering how MY body took shape as I treated it right, instead of looking any certain way. THAT is the point of #screwthescale -- strive to live an active, healthy lifestyle and learn to love and embrace YOUR body. All of us are built differently. NONE of us is built better. Set goals to be a stronger and healthier you, not to be a certain weight or look like someone else. Then WORK for those goals, and love yourself along the way. #everyBODYisbeautiful #youdoyou . .#transformationtuesday #bbgprogress #fit #fitness #fitfam #fitspo #fitmom #workout #sweat #happy #healthy #fitchick #fitnessmotivation

The realisation made her throw away scales so she could focus on how she felt and treated her body instead.

"And if I didn't say #screwthescale long ago, I would have gave up on my journey [sic]. So to the little teeny tiny voice in the back of my head that still said "wtf is this - not 140!?" last week when I stepped on the scale, I say SCREW. YOU. And I think you should probably say the same to your scale too."
