"Manny the Cow", whose escape from a cattle ship in Fremantle made headlines around the world, is to be remembered at a candlelit vigil in Fremantle.

The steer jumped into the water at Fremantle Port while being loaded onto a ship on Sunday and spent the next 24 hours at large in Fremantle and North Coogee.

After he was eventually caught his owners announced that he had died from exhaustion.

Now the group Stop Live Exports has organised a candlelit vigil in memory of Manny. It will be held at Fremantle Port on Monday starting at 7pm.

The group's Facebook post advertising the event said the steer's escape attempt had captured the hearts of thousands of people around the world.

"We would like to pay tribute to this beautiful being's desperate bid for freedom and utilise his memory as a reminder of what hundreds of thousands of cattle and millions of sheep will face every year, and what tens of millions have already faced when sent from Australia to other countries for slaughter," state the post.

"As tragic as it was, 'Manny' could have experienced a much worse ending to his short life. Please join us at Fremantle Port this Monday night to light a candle in his memory."

Manny was captured after roaming free for 24 hours and returned to the Wellard Group, which owns the cattle ship Ocean Drover.

During that time a number of campaigns emerged around Australia to save him. One petition on change.org, which called on the Wellard Group to free the steer, attracted more than 13,000 signatures.

However, Wellard put out a statement on Thursday saying the cow had died.

"To protect the health and safety of the general public the steer was heavily sedated prior to its return to the quarantine facility where it was monitored by a veterinarian.

"Unfortunately the steer did not recover from the combined effects of sedation and its physical exertion and passed away in its sleep," said the statement.
