Man threatens mother and three children in 'drunken tantrum'

A man has been charged after a "drunken tantrum" where he allegedly threw two garbage bins at his ex-partner's car and tried to break into her house while she and her three children locked themselves inside.

The man, aged 32, faced the ACT Magistrates Court on Saturday.

Officers were called to a home in Macgregor where the man was said to be living with his partner and three children about 7.30pm on Friday night.

The woman had called a friend, screaming at her to contact police as the man tried to break into the premises, after she had asked him to leave, locking the screen and wooden front door behind him.

According to police, the woman felt threatened when the man came to the home. Police said the intoxicated man, in a fit of rage, had tried to pull the screen door off its frame, and damaged the wooden door trying to get in.

The woman then allegedly heard objects being thrown at her vehicle, parked next to the home. Police say the man threw two garbage bins at the woman's car, cracking her front windscreen and damaging the front door.

The man was found sitting in a gutter opposite the house when police arrived on Friday night.

The couple had been in a relationship for 12 months, the court had heard, and the man was living with the woman and her three children, aged 11, nine and seven.

Magistrate Campbell said the man had acted in a drunken tantrum, and due to his volatile and threatening behaviour, the likelihood of committing other offences and outstanding warrants, he was refused bail.

No pleas were entered.
