Tokyo Stock Price Index (東証株価指数), commonly known as TOPIX, along with the Nikkei 225, is an important stock market index for the Tokyo Stock Exchange (TSE) in Japan, tracking all domestic companies of the exchange's First Section. It is calculated and published by the TSE. As of 1 February 2011, there are 1,669 companies listed on the First Section of the TSE, and the market value for the index was ¥197.4 trillion.
The index transitioned from a system where a company's weighting is based on the total number of shares outstanding to a weighting based on the number of shares available for trading (called the free float). This transition took place in three phases starting in October 2005 and was completed in June 2006. Although the change is a technicality, it had a significant effect on the weighting of many companies in the index, because many companies in Japan have significant holdings of shares of their business partners as a part of intricate business alliances, and such shares are no longer included in calculating the weight of companies in the index.
An index is an indirect shortcut derived from and pointing into a greater volume of values, data, information or knowledge. Index may refer to:

SHOTLIST 1. Various of Tokyo stock exchange STORYLINE: Asian markets were lower in early Wednesday trade following Wall Street losses. The benchmark Nikkei 225 stock average fell 74.33 points, or 0.84 percent, to 8,768.35 points. The broader Topix index also fell 9.27 points, or 1.10 percent to 834.15 points. Sentiments are downbeat due to concerns over Wall Street's shift into reverse on Tuesday after a surprisingly weak retail sales report punctured investors' optimism about the economy. Declines were seen in securities, consumer finance and in real estate. Japanese real estate companies dropped after developer Sumitomo Realty & Development's announcement on annual profit likely to fall 30 percent. Markets worldwide have posted enormous gains since early March, with many swin...

Japan’s benchmark Nikkei 225 index slumped four-point-84 percent. The broader Topix index fell five-point-43 percent. Hong Kong stocks ended more than one percent lower extending the previous day's near-four percent plunge. This, while oil prices surged more than five percent in Asia. The US benchmark West Texas Intermediate for delivery in March hit 27 dollars and 68 cents a barrel while Brent crude for delivery in April reached 31 dollars and 74 cents a barrel. The recent fall in oil prices has prompted some OPEC members to try and get the organization to reduce production in a bid to balance the prices. For instance, if the (Japanese) government decides to inject the public money into the global banking system, especially the United States. So, I think, Japan can persuade the US to step into the right direction. So, this type of policy or political leadership must be pretty important for the Japanese government and the Japanese equity...

This morning we see mostly green arrows around the world as the BOJ announcement midday resulted in the Topix surging +2.7% led by banks, insurers & other financials as the BOJ left the benchmark rate at -.1%, not cutting further into negative territory. The BoJ will shift the focus of its stimulus to controlling the yield curve, scraping a target for the average maturity of its JGB holdings. They will also adjust its ETF purchases to focus more on the Topix Index. All sectors have been trading differently.

London's FTSE benchmark index fell point-seven percent and Frankfurt's DAX index was down almost point-five percent while Paris CAC slid point-two percent. Meanwhile a renewed weakening in oil prices resulted in a slide in Asia stocks. Japan's benchmark Nikkei dropped point-nine percent and the broader Topix index lost point-ninety four percent. Analysts say that slowing growth in emerging economies, lack of demand and a high risk of financial instability are the main reasons behind the plunge of world stocks. Markets across Asia were holding their breath on Wednesday after early hopes that the worst of this week’s turmoil could be behind them were tempered by concern that China has not done enough to stabilise its economy. A day after China’s central bank lowered interest rates in an attempt to ease the crisis, most Asia-Pacific stocks suffered minor losses, while Japan’s Nikkei benchmark index mounted a modest comeback after six days of bruising losses. With the trading day several hours old, the Nikkei had gained 0.4%. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was up 18.81 points, or 1.3%.

The Nikkei 225 (日経平均株価 Nikkei heikin kabuka?, 日経225), more commonly called the Nikkei, the Nikkei index, or the Nikkei Stock Average (/ˈnɪkeɪ/, /ˈniːkeɪ/, or /nɪˈkeɪ/), is a stock market index for the Tokyo Stock Exchange (TSE). It has been calculated daily by the Nihon Keizai Shimbun (Nikkei) newspaper since 1950. It is a price-weighted index (the unit is yen), and the components are reviewed once a year. Currently, the Nikkei is the most widely quoted average of Japanese equities, similar to the Dow Jones Industrial Average. In fact, it was known as the "Nikkei Dow Jones Stock Average" from 1975 to 1985. The Nikkei 225 began to be calculated on September 7, 1950, retroactively calculated back to May 16, 1949. Since January 2010 the index is updated every 15 seconds during trading sessio...

Today, there are more than 90 futures and futures options exchanges worldwide trading to include: CME Group (formerly CBOT and CME) -- Currencies, Various Interest Rate derivatives (including US Bonds); Agricultural (Corn, Soybeans, Soy Products, Wheat, Pork, Cattle, Butter, Milk); Indices (...
