Jeddah (sometimes spelled Jiddah or Jedda ; English pronunciation: /ˈdʒɛdə/; Arabic: جدة Jiddah or Jaddah, IPA: [ˈdʒedda, ˈdʒidda]) is a city in the Hijaz Tihamah region on the coast of the Red Sea and is the major urban center of western Saudi Arabia. It is the largest city in Makkah Province, the largest sea port on the Red Sea, and the second-largest city in Saudi Arabia after the capital city, Riyadh. With a population currently at 3.4 million people, Jeddah is an important commercial hub in Saudi Arabia.
Jeddah is the principal gateway to Mecca, Islam's holiest city, which able-bodied Muslims are required to visit at least once in their lifetime. It is also a gateway to Medina, the second holiest place in Islam.
Economically, Jeddah is focusing on further developing capital investment in scientific and engineering leadership within Saudi Arabia, and the Middle East. Jeddah was independently ranked fourth in the Africa – Mid-East region in terms of innovation in 2009 in the Innovation Cities Index.
Saudi Arabia (i/ˌsɔːdiː əˈreɪbiə/, i/ˌsaʊ-/), officially known as the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA), is an Arab state in Western Asia constituting the bulk of the Arabian Peninsula. With a land area of approximately 2,150,000 km2 (830,000 sq mi), Saudi Arabia is geographically the second-largest state in the Arab world after Algeria. Saudi Arabia is bordered by Jordan and Iraq to the north, Kuwait to the northeast, Qatar, Bahrain, and the United Arab Emirates to the east, Oman to the southeast, and Yemen to the south. It is the only nation with both a Red Sea coast and a Persian Gulf coast, and most of its terrain consists of arid inhospitable desert or barren landforms.
The area of modern-day Saudi Arabia formerly consisted of four distinct regions: Hejaz, Najd, and parts of Eastern Arabia (Al-Ahsa) and Southern Arabia ('Asir). The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia was founded in 1932 by Ibn Saud. He united the four regions into a single state through a series of conquests beginning in 1902 with the capture of Riyadh, the ancestral home of his family, the House of Saud. The country has since been an absolute monarchy, effectively a hereditary dictatorship governed along Islamic lines. The ultra-conservative Wahhabism religious movement within Sunni Islam has been called "the predominant feature of Saudi culture", with its global spreading largely financed by the oil and gas trade. Saudi Arabia is sometimes called "the Land of the Two Holy Mosques" in reference to Al-Masjid al-Haram (in Mecca), and Al-Masjid an-Nabawi (in Medina), the two holiest places in Islam. The Kingdom has a total population of 28.7 million, of which 20 million are Saudi nationals and 8 million are foreigners.
The Red Sea (also the Erythraean Sea) is a seawater inlet of the Indian Ocean, lying between Africa and Asia. The connection to the ocean is in the south through the Bab el Mandeb strait and the Gulf of Aden. In the north, there is the Sinai Peninsula, the Gulf of Aqaba, and the Gulf of Suez (leading to the Suez Canal). The Red Sea is a Global 200 ecoregion. The sea is underlain by the Red Sea Rift which is part of the Great Rift Valley.
The Red Sea has a surface area of roughly 438,000 km2 (169,100 mi2). It is about 2250 km (1398 mi) long and, at its widest point, 355 km (220.6 mi) wide. It has a maximum depth of 2211 m (7254 ft) in the central median trench, and an average depth of 490 m (1,608 ft). However, there are also extensive shallow shelves, noted for their marine life and corals. The sea is the habitat of over 1,000 invertebrate species, and 200 soft and hard corals. It is the world's northernmost tropical sea.
The International Hydrographic Organization defines the limits of the Red Sea as follows:
Jeddah is the second largest city of Saudi Arabia. Located at the Red Sea and being the most important starting point for the hadj it has a more international atmosphere than Riyadh and is therefore more liberal. The video clip shows impressions of the city. I visited Jeddah during our overland trip from the Netherlands to South Africa (my wife was not admitted to Saudi Arabia)

The Jeddah tower will stand 1 kilometer tall upon completion in 2019. It will overtake the Burj Khalifa as the tallest building in the world, towering over Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Construction was halted for a few months over the summer, but it just recently began again. Slow but steady progress should be expected! The tower now stands 182m and 45fl tall. Al-Balad's defensive walls were torn down in the 1940s. When Jeddah began to become wealthier due to the oil boom, many Jeddawis moved north, away from Al-Balad. Today AL Balad is traded by many of the immigrants who have come to Saudi Arabia for work.

Guided by my excellent Couchsurfing host, Mohammed, we set off on our 2 wheeled exploration of Jeddah starting at the airport and ending up several hours later at my hotel. After a power nap, it was off to see what the city had to offer at night. Dont even THINK about riding here in the summer - you will fry like an egg. This is 'winter' and its 30c.

I recorded various clips while traveling to Makkah city from Jeddah by road then combined them into one short movie with Urdu subtitles and a Quran recitation in the background. I hope you will like it. Love to see your feedback in the comments box below.

Travel video about destination Arabian Desert in Saudi Arabia. The oldest Arabian trading city, Dubai is a pulsating desert metropolis in the Middle East which is today synonymous with High Tech and Bedouins plus tall desert sand dunes, rocky terrain and the blazing sun.The Al-Fahidi Fort is Dubai’s oldest building and was built at the beginning of the 19th century and now houses the Dubai Museum. Narrow alleys lead through the Goldsuk, the traditional covered bazaar, in which shops and stalls are packed closely together, with merchandise worth millions glittering in tempting shop windows. But for those who wish to experience something a little different, the sand dunes of the desert are the perfect setting for Dune Riding, an exhilarating extreme sport that’s off the normal tourist trail....
Walking around the Airport in Jeddah, I noticed a lot of amazing things. Not the least of which was the fact that I, too, was being watched. In fact, I'd already been stopped, searched and questioned about the amount of camera and recording gear that I was traveling with. It was an awkward moment realizing that rather than the hassle-free passing through the lines of western airports, I was singled out precisely because I was western! The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is a modern nation that honors its Arab heritage and tradition. Saudi Muslims live in peaceful co-existence with those of other faiths and religions. Moreover, there are alot of non-muslims who are working and visiting the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The rapid urban and economic growth in Saudi Arabia creates a lot of work opportunity for experts.
Lover come and set me free from my restrain
Tear the rags away they bind me
Stare me down and cut me deeply to the bone
Give me every tooth and blind me
You are Madonna, you Lady Divine
You are part Mother Theresa and a valentine
Some man's pariah and a slippery slope
But to me you are the fire and I fly to my hope
Mother teaching me now lessons from the past
In faded photo albums lying open on the floor
She heals me with a Nikon camera captured laugh
And with a wink she sets me free forever more
So consume me now and burn me to the marrow
Heat me up like the world can never do
Tear my heart out from my body if you have to and
Then swallow me to prove that I am you
You are Madonna, you are lady divine
You are part Mother Theresa and a valentine
Some man's pariah and a slippery slope

I'll fly
