“The soul has more need for the ideal than the real,” says American architect Steven Holl, who here shares his organic approach to creating architecture that can potentially change people’s lives.
Architecture ”begins with a site and a circumstance, a situation and a programme” according to Holl. Therefore it should be reinvented for every situation instead of simply aiming for a signature style. Holl’s focus is thus on the place rather than on the need to strengthen a given brand, which seems prevalent in modern society.
The organic relation between everything, the intertwining of every element and material, including the light, is an important part of how Holl creates his architectural designs. “Architecture is about shaping space”, states Holl, and the experience of the architectural space should be pure and free of the conceptual strategies behind it – just as when you experience and appreciate music.
“The soul has more need for the ideal than the real,” he continues, explaining how it can be of utmost importance to break the rules and mentioning Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Denmark as an example of how this can be done successfully and exceptionally.
Steven Holl (born 1947) is an American architect and watercolourist, who is world-renowned for his designs for e.g. the 2003 Simmons Hall at MIT in Cambridge, Massachusetts; the 2007 Bloch Building addition to the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, Missouri and the 2009 Linked Hybrid Complex in Beijing, China. Holl is the founder of Steven Holl Architects and also a tenured faculty member at Columbia University where he has taught since 1981. In 2001 Time Magazine named him America’s Best Architect, for ’buildings that satisfy the spirit as well as the eye’. He has been awarded the Praemium Imperiale Award (2014), the 2012 AIA Gold Medal, the 2010 Jencks Awards of the RIBA and the Alvar Aalto Medal (1998) among many others.

Steven Holl was born in 1947 in Bremerton, Washington. He graduated from the University of Washington and pursued architecture studies in Rome in 1970. In 1976 he attended the Architectural Association in London and established STEVEN HOLL ARCHITECTS in New York City.
Steven Holl has realized cultural, civic, academic and residential projects both in the United States and internationally. Notable work includes the Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art in Helsinki, Finland (1998), the Chapel of St. Ignatius, Seattle, Washington (1997), the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art (2007), and the Horizontal Skyscraper-Vanke Center (2009). The Cité de l'Océan et du Surf museum, a collaboration with Solange Fabião opened in Biarritz in June 2011; the Daeyang House and Gallery will open in Seoul, Korea in Spring 2012, and the Nanjing Sifang Art Museum will open to the public in October 2012. Currently in design are the new University of Iowa Arts Building; the Princeton University Center of Creative and Performing Arts; the new Doctorate's Building at the National University of Colombia, in Bogota; and the Queens Library in Long Island City, NY. Under construction are the large mixed-use Sliced Porosity Block in Chengdu, China; the Beirut Marina and Town Quay; the new Glasgow School of Art; and the Campbell Sports Center at Baker Athletics Complex at Columbia University.
Steven Holl is a tenured Professor at Columbia University's Graduate School of Architecture and Planning. He has lectured and exhibited widely and has published numerous texts including Anchoring (1989), Parallax (2000), Luminosity/Porosity (2006), House: Black Swan Theory (2007), Architecture Spoken (2007), Urbanisms: Working With Doubt (Princeton Architectural Press, 2009) and Hamsun Holl Hamarøy (Lars Müller Publishers, 2010). Most recently published are his new books Horizontal Skyscraper (William Stout Publishers, 2011), Scale (Lars Müller Publishers, 2012) and Color Light Time (Lars Müller Publishers, 2012).

Steven Holl
Steven Holl (born December 9, 1947) is a New York-based American architect and watercolorist, best known for his designs for the 2003 Simmons Hall at MIT in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the 2007 Bloch Building addition to the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, Missouri, and the 2009 Linked Hybrid mixed-use complex in Beijing, China.
Early works
Holl won first prize in the Amerika-Gedenkbibliothek International Library Design Competition in 1988, an expansion and renovation of the American Memorial Library in Berlin. In February, 1989 Holl's work was exhibited in a solo show at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City. MoMA later purchased twenty-five works by Holl for the museum's permanent collection. In the 1992 competition for a new contemporary arts museum in Helsinki, Finland, Holl's entry, entitled "Chiasma," won first prize out of more than five hundred international entries. The museum opened to the public in 1998, having permanently adopted the name "Kiasma," the Finnish translation of "chiasma."

“The soul has more need for the ideal than the real,” says American architect Steven Holl, who here shares his organic approach to creating architecture that can potentially change people’s lives.
Architecture ”begins with a site and a circumstance, a situation and a programme” according to Holl. Therefore it should be reinvented for every situation instead of simply aiming for a signature style. Holl’s focus is thus on the place rather than on the need to strengthen a given brand, which seems prevalent in modern society.
The organic relation between everything, the intertwining of every element and material, including the light, is an important part of how Holl creates his architectural designs. “Architecture is about shaping space”, states Holl, and the experience of the architectural space should be pure and free of the conceptual strategies behind it – just as when you experience and appreciate music.
“The soul has more need for the ideal than the real,” he continues, explaining how it can be of utmost importance to break the rules and mentioning Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Denmark as an example of how this can be done successfully and exceptionally.

Notable work includes the Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art in Helsinki, Finland (1998), the Chapel of St. Ignatius, Seattle, Washington (1997), the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art (2007), and the Horizontal Skyscraper-Vanke Center (2009). The Cité de l'Océan et du Surf museum, a collaboration with Solange Fabião opened in Biarritz in June 2011; the Daeyang House and Gallery will open in Seoul, Korea in Spring 2012, and the Nanjing Sifang Art Museum will open to the public in October 2012. Currently in design are the new University of Iowa Arts Building; the Princeton University Center of Creative and Performing Arts; the new Doctorate's Building at the National University of Colombia, in Bogota; and the Queens Library in Long Island City, NY. Under construction are the large mixed-use Sliced Porosity Block in Chengdu, China; the Beirut Marina and Town Quay; the new Glasgow School of Art; and the Campbell Sports Center at Baker Athletics Complex at Columbia University.
Steven Holl is a tenured Professor at Columbia University's Graduate School of Architecture and Planning. He has lectured and exhibited widely and has published numerous texts including Anchoring (1989), Parallax (2000), Luminosity/Porosity (2006), House: Black Swan Theory (2007), Architecture Spoken (2007), Urbanisms: Working With Doubt (Princeton Architectural Press, 2009) and Hamsun Holl Hamarøy (Lars Müller Publishers, 2010). Most recently published are his new books Horizontal Skyscraper (William Stout Publishers, 2011), Scale (Lars Müller Publishers, 2012) and Color Light Time (Lars Müller Publishers, 2012).

Translucency (An Architect's Guide)
“Light is to architecture what sound is to music.” (Steven Holl) At the two ends of the spectrum of light control and transmission stand transparency and opacity. Translucency inhabits the broad middle ground between those two. The word “translucent” is derived from the Latin “trans“ ("through") and “lucere“ ("to shine"). Translucent surfaces permit the passage of light while visually obscuring what’s behind it. Past as Prologue was a symposium held in November 2014 in honor of Michael Graves on the occasion of his fiftieth year in practice.
